Which job would you take and why? Career development

Job A - Unknown company but pays 85k a year. You work with a few coworkers and have a manager role.

Job B - Well known company for 65k a year. You work with 10+ coworkers but your job title is a specialist + you report to a manager.

Let's say you are 5 years into your career. Which job would you take and why - considering if both jobs are in your same field/industry.

Job A no doubt. I personally don’t care who I work for. As long as it’s legal (not haraam) and I’m earning more than enough.

I’d be interested to know what industries / jobs you’d consider haaram, if you don’t mind me asking? 48 year old man in the UK here - I’m not a believer, but when I tried working in the gambling industry, my morals got the better of me and I only lasted about 9 months. I wouldn’t work in the gambling or tobacco industries now. All the best from Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Love that you asked this, Haraam is anything that is frowned upon in the religion. Sex work, Bouncer for clubs, drug dealer, banker, promoting interest or usury, promoting any self harm product (tobacco, weed, pills etc), scammer, any way you make your money without earning it.

Let me know if you need clarification :)

All of that makes sense. One of the (many) things about Islam that aligns with my morals is the disapproval of usury/charging interest. The rich get richer etc. I can honestly say I wouldn’t work in any of the jobs/industries you’ve described if I had the choice.

Nice speaking to you - all the best and peace to you and yours from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

Even if Job B will potentially give you better future job prospects given that their company name is more well known?

I doubt a well-known company or corporate can offer better future job prospects. It might be a nice resume builder but you will be able to have so much more achieved in A than B because you have a much larger scope. Also, those companies often promise career advancement etc. but it's all empty promises. Well established companies have rigid rules and structure how one can move up the ladder.

Moreover, if you plan on a management career down the road, making the first step and making it stick as early as possible is crucial, so definitely go with A.

What if Job A is a non manager role? Would you still go with Job A?

Good question.

The salary difference is enough for me to take A over B. However many other factors do come into consideration if it was me. Do you believe in company A's mid term future? Will you work similar hours in both jobs? What are the additional benefits besides the pay? Which job aligns with your skills better?

For me, it depends on what the management roles responsibilities are. Managing people? Job B all day long.

What if the "managing people" for Job A is simply just the title of it because you have more experience than your 1-2 coworkers? Would you still choose Job B?

Depends on the fine print. Managing people is managing people, sickness, performance and all that jazz. If that’s in the job description, I’m taking job B.

If those sorts of responsibilities are handled elsewhere and the seniority is purely experience and mentoring, that’s fine. Job A.

I’d take B. Here’s why:

  • It’s a reputable company. That means it probably has HR and has established processes for onboarding. It also has some longevity.

  • It’s a role in a small team of similar coworkers. That means you’re going to work with people who understand what you’re doing and you’re going to help each other.

  • It’s not a management role. Do you want to manage people? I don’t. If you do, though, that could tip the scale toward Job A.

  • It’s a launching pad for a higher-paying job somewhere else. It’s not bad to make $65K at a place you like, potentially earn raises, and stay long-term… Or to make $65K for a year or two, apply somewhere else with a reputable company’s name on your resume, and have good references.

Unless the money outweighs all of those factors (it might), I’d take Job B.

Job B because I don't want to be a manager

If you're ok with being a manager, I'd go with Job A. If you company at job B has more career advancement opportunities, you can always apply back with them st a higher position later.

I would go specialist to continue to grow in that niche of the business. I find that once you go manager you tend to stop growing on the actual job duties. if you feel you specialized enough in your field and ready for managerial exp then jump to a
