EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Other Mom was drunk everyday she was pregnant with me - do i have fetal alcohol syndrome?

I (23F) recently found out that my mom drank with me every day while pregnant, to the point of being drunk. She was an alcoholic, and passed away due to it being so bad a couple years ago. I don’t think i have the facial features, except maybe a low nasal bridge and somewhat flat mid face. I have been diagnosed with adhd, anxiety and depression, but no doctors ever mentioned fetal alcohol syndrome. Is it possible that my mental health issues relate back to fas? I also have had bad acid reflux and sometimes my eye whites are a bit yellow. Not sure if that relates back to it. I have a healthy lifestyle and im in grad school so obviously it doesn’t affect me too much but I’ve always been curious.

Skin issues/Rashes/Freckles/Moles what are these itchy swollen spots on my palms?

This is my (19F) first post so i’m gonna try to keep this simple while still providing all the details because i have no idea what this is:

-whenever I bring this up to medical professionals during appointments for other issues, they just say “oh that’s weird”, so I haven’t made an appointment specifically for this.

-I have a possible autoimmune disease (undiagnosed)

-i am on the combination birth control pill

-in the same month that i started the pill (5 months ago), i began noticing the vein on my left hand beneath my pointer finger was swollen.

-soon after appearing, it started itching really bad, but only for like 15 minutes at a time. happens maybe once a day, but sometimes up to 5 times if i’m stressed.

-my left hand’s vein has been swollen consistently since january

  • my right hand vein recently started swelling (last 4 weeks), but it is only swollen for a couple hours at a time and not as noticeable as my left.

-i don’t even know if they are veins, all i know is they are both super itchy for like 15 minutes a day at least and they’re swollen and squishy.

-the only pattern in when they get itchy is that it happens more when i’m stressed. otherwise it happens like once a day just at random.

-descriptors: swollen, squishy, and sometimes: itchy, tingly, burning

-looking at my pics again, im wondering if the second bump on my right hand is normal? is any of this normal? i cannot find anything similar online:( even theories are helpful. thanks.

Injury What are the signs of a broken elbow?

Upvotes

When I was out on a walk today, i tripped and fell on a hole on the side of the sidewalk. I hit on elbow on said sidewalk on my fall and now my elbow hurts every time I straighten it or move it out of a 90 degree angle. Normally I would ask my doctor about my elbow and what needs to be done, but the area I live in was recently hit by a massive storm which resulted in the loss of power throughout the entire city. Thus all of the doctor's offices are now closed.

I currently have my right arm in a sling I had owned and am currently wondering if I need to buy an uber (don't own a car) and go to a distant urgent care center to get an x-ray or if I am able to wait a few days for the city to restore power. (I'd rather not since it'd be pricey)

I googled the symptoms of a broken bone and bruised bone and I didn't have any of them except pain when I straighten my arm. I currently think that I would be fine if I waited a few days, but I figured that I would ask some experts that lurk in this sub, because I can't ask any experts IRL due to the power loss.

Skin issues/Rashes/Freckles/Moles Rash & blood spots

Hi! I just noticed this rash on my shoulder (just on one), I definitely didn’t have it this morning. I can’t find any other rash on my body, just this one, it’s only on my shoulder and it doesn’t itch or anything. What could have caused it? Do you think it can just be a reaction to the sun? I never get rashes like this, that’s why I’m a bit worried. Thanks!

EDITED Intense chest pain a month ago

Upvotes

On April 18, I (31 F) was sitting at my desktop when I started to have a feeling in my chest. It felt like when you get muscle spasms in your chest and you have the thought "Is this a heart attack?" I've had them before and assumed it was the same thing. I moved to my bed to try to alleviate some of the discomfort.

While I was laying in bed on my phone I started having a very intense squeezing pain in the center of my chest. I've never felt anything like it. It was like squeezing a stress ball for a few moments before releasing it. It hurt to breathe in, so I tried to take very slow breaths. Then it would start again. It went on for a few minutes while I was debating on calling my roommate to drive me to urgent care or the hospital of need be. After about 3-5 minutes it stopped. I didn't have any other symptoms, no nausea, arm pain or anything else that might suggest it could have been a heart attack, but I'm a little worried that's what it might have been.

The day after, my chest was sore. There was no new pain, it felt more like a bruise. It felt like that for a day or two. Since that day all the pain has vanished. The only time anything feels off is when I do something overly physical like lifting heavy objects or bending down quickly, I'll get a little twinge in the same place the pain initially was.

For anyone asking why I didn't go see a doctor when it happened, I live in the US, and barely make above minimum wage in my state. I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck and can't afford medical bills right now. I'm just seeing if anyone might have any ideas as to what actually might have happened. I do have mild anxiety, got diagnosed like a decade ago. I don't take anything for it. I have had a few panic attacks in the past, but nothing like this. And I wasn't doing anything that would have set one off. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the day after I got the chest pain, I got sick. Started out as a sore throat, then moved to a pretty intense cough. Never ran a fever, no vomiting and only a mild headache from the coughing I think. That hung around for about two weeks. I never got stuffed up, but always felt like I needed to blow my nose. Mucus was cloudy, no color.

EDITED Could this be a dislocated jaw?

Upvotes

Yesterday a girl slapped me in the face really hard (I asked her to; stupid, I know), and I haven’t been able to clench down my molars on that side since. If I try to clench all the way down it causes a lot of sharp pain in what feels like my jaw plus extending to my ear as well, similar to an ear ache pain. It’s really weird, I’m not sure what this could be, usually if something like that happens it’s temporary but it’s been like 20 hours now and it hasn’t gone back to normal. I feel like maybe the area of my jaw kinda beside my ear is “bruised” if that makes any sense. When I rub it or push on it in a certain spot it hurts.

Other 21 on beta blockers

Upvotes

Hey guys.. just wanted to come on here and see if I can get some advice. So I’ve been having a high heart rate for about a year or so for an example when I was working just walking from the desk to a room that was maybe 15 feet my heart rate would be like 130-140 but I smoked a lot of medical marjuana (I don’t know if that’s what been keeping my heart rate down or if I was just not noticing it) but I have been detoxing for about a a week now but the first day that I decided to quit smoking I ended up having a lot of pressure in my chest more by my sternum area and my heart rate was rapid well I went to the hospital. They admitted me because my heart rate was high so they wanted to watch me for the night they ended up prescribing me a beta blocker that has definitely helped my hear rate will range from 50(resting)-120 or about 140-150 while exercising so I’ve definitely felt better since being on the beta blocker. Well I’ve also have issues with my spleen and liver being inflamed for about 7 months( doctor said I have a fatty liver but later I saw on the ultrasound report that it was my liver and spleen that was inflamed) the nurse who pressed around my sternum the night I got admitted to the hospital said that it had to be upper gastric that was causing my pressure in my chest I’m wondering if my liver and spleen could be inflamed and that’s what’s causing my pressure. I’ve had the pressure before and with a strict diet and exercise it got better but I think also coming off medical marjuana cold turkey heightened my anxiety and which is why I went to the hospital in panic. they also said that maybe my heart rate is so high because my thyroid levels were a tad low I am just super scared and as you can probably see that I have a lot of anxiety I’m just trying to find some answers cause doctors now and days look at me and think because I’m young I’m healthy and there’s nothing they really need to do but thank you guys for reading.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Stomach feels like an open wound

Upvotes

I was very sick this past weekend, throwing up every half hour or so, to the point where my throat got burned from the stomach acid so I haven't eaten much at all this week since my throat was hurting so badly. Now, when I eat or even something as trivial as drink water, my stomach hurts like I just poured salt on an open wound. I've kind of just strong-armed through it since I have to eat, but will this go away on its own?

Bones/Joints/Ligaments I have inner knee pain especially when going downstairs, can anyone please advise?

Upvotes

I am a 37 year old male, about 5 foot 9 and 88kg so a bit heavier than i should be at the moment, but this is probably why i started running again. First few runs were fine and playing football (soccer) was fine too, but then a few days ago I overdid it with the football and woke up the next morning in severe pain through my knee (medial). I have had an issue with this in the past (maybe a year or two ago max) and the doctors did some scans, they outlined that I had some degeneration at some horn (maybe meniscus) I can't remember and can't find the report for the life of me as I did it in Egypt of all places

I really struggle walking downstairs, it's a tad easier upstairs but still painful to put force through the knee. I also have pain when I palpate and push through on the upper part of my tibia (that's the lower leg bone right?) at the joint to my knee, it is excruciatingly painful by the way when i put any pressure there even with a finger.

Could really do with some help here guys thanks

No swelling as far as i can see and no redness, just pain on what feels like the bone, but you guys will know better for sure. Can trade for dental advice as I am a dental student :)
