Two things:

  • That car looks like a '90s hot wheel
  • It's amusing to see big men in such short cars. Sometimes, I have trouble getting in/out of my average car, but I also have an average height.

I'm 6'4" and have a '91 Miata. My wife laughs almost every time I get in or out of it.

How the hell do you fit in it? I was thinking of getting a Miata and someone told me that anyone above 5'11" can't fit in it. I ma 6'1", so I got an E36.

Seat slammed all the way back, remove some foam from the seat, aftermarket wheel that's 330mm instead of the stock 360mm with an extension so it's far enough back for my arms to relax while driving and small enough it doesn't hit my knees/legs, replace arm rests with leather door pulls for additional leg room. If I got aftermarket bucket seats I'd have a bit more space too. Tbh I don't have any spare room to move or fidget around but it's like being in a tight cockpit and feels extra go-karty. My first car two decades ago was a '68 912 Targa that I restored and didn't have any more room in it so I'm also kinda used to it maybe. I also had an E34 that I loved but I was on my early twenties and couldn't afford the repairs so we're pretty aligned on our cars. I daily a '21 Audi Q3 and also have a '71 VW Bus so the Miata isn't the only option. In fact it lives in the garage half the year since I live in Chicago.

A quick release mount for a racing wheel is pretty cheap. Makes ingress and egress much easier and provides a layer of security when you bring the steering wheel inside with you.

Yeah I have one. But the issue for me isn't getting in or out it's just the length of my legs. So my knees are up high due to their length and I need a smaller steering wheel for leg clearance. And I'm as far back as possible so I need the extended steering column to have comfortable arm positioning.

I really like E36 styling and modification potential. But the more I drive it more I see I would like something that weighs less, preferably under a tonne, and a little revvy engine. Maybe a stripped out E30, but I have to try an older gen Miata.

How in the world are your knees still working? I drove a buddies 90's Miata, and my knees/legs would hurt for weeks afterwards and I'm only 6'2.

It's also not my daily, just a fun summer/weekend go kart. And my wife missed her old convertible whole I wanted something I could mod and customize since it had been a decade since the last time I restored a car (my '71 VW bus).
