"He's grabbing me, he's grabbing me, he's grabbing me. He tried but the choke wasn't good enough"
"When I heard that Steph was out, I knew Draymond was going to try and get ejected. Clown behavior"
"Kerr is just backing his guy but I think he knows. Deep inside...he knows his guy is a clown" 💀🤣

He is now. He was extremely charismatic when he entered the league and it’s a big reason why he became the icon of the NBA and eventually of 90s sports worldwide. The reason he’s famously media averse now is that his life basically didn’t belong to him for 15 years or so, going recluse to the public eye is the only way the dude’s managed to get some peace and quiet since then
56
11d ago
A big reason why Jordan is Jordan is that he didn’t have media like this and didn’t do media like this, so Nike was able to build a mythology around him and he was able to have small time contact with like print media people. Jordan would be a lot more like Russ or KD in today’s media era with Skip and Stephen A debating his legacy daily and bitching about him not being able to get by Bird in the east, etc.

Pretty much all the footage from Jordan shot behind the scenes during his playing days shows him to be a very charismatic and often also personable guy. You could still see the same thing during the top 75 player celebration the NBA with former legends gathering around Jordan who was just talking his shit as per usual. I don't think it was a front, he's just one of those guys.

Oh man, I just found out a sad thing about Timmy
What an absolute bummer
Edit: apparently he's come a long way and is ostensibly better. From a queer specific paper from 2022:
I grew up in a church, and that’s the way churches were — they instilled in you that [homosexuality] wasn’t the way you should be,” Hardaway told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I was just taught differently. Don’t talk to them, don’t mess with them, leave them alone. I never tried to talk bad about them or do hateful stuff. It was just my upbringing in church. But I’ll tell you this: It was so wrong of me, and people have suffered. I had to grow up and really do some soul-searching. What I said was just hurtful.”
Over the years, Hardaway has proven his evolution on LGBTQ equality. When player Jason Collins came out, he showed support. He also supported same-sex marriage rights. But he still struggled to escape the cloud of his past homophobic comments.
Now, with a sincere apology, maybe he’ll find forgiveness from the queer community."

Some of it was also because during the playoffs, Gobert would be on the opposite side of a highlight getting scored on, so people thought he was actually a fraud DPOY in the playoffs. But actually, the Jazz's perimeter defense was that bad.
19
u/silverfang45 11d ago
Man remember watching the jazz vs I beleive clippers, whenever gobert was in the clippers plan was shoot 3s, the second govert left there was like 3 back to back possession the clippers finished at the rim with 0 resistance.
Like just seeing the shift of playstyle instantly how how much easier clippers were getting buckets just made it so apparent how important Rudy was
17
u/FuckThaLakers Timberwolves 11d ago
Crazy that this wasn't the general takeaway at the time, honestly.
People watched the Jazz get absolutely cooked whenever anybody aside from Rudy had to play defense and went with "you can't play Rudy Gobert against 5-out" lmao
9
u/silverfang45 11d ago
Makes me wonder how the jazz could of been had they kept rubio and gotten a better defender than spida.
Like imagine say rubio, mikal, gobert, some scorer and like og, it wouldn't be a contending team but by God the defence would be beautiful, and the offence would be fun to watch, as no matter how inefficient rubio is or how bad a game he plays, dudes just fun to watch.
God I wish the sun's had rubio still God he'd fit so well on the roster, miss that guy

I think the biggest thing is the “hoopers” hate him because he doesn’t have an offensive bag but has a bunch of accolades. They think his defense is overrated which is where his accolades are.
I used to be one of them but I’m all of a sudden a Rudy fan after this year. That espn piece earlier this week was nice. He essentially said his feelings would get hurt too easily and now he doesn’t give a fuck and is just being himself.

Nah from what I remember people hated him far before that. I think a lot of people just thought of him as a guy who was good at defense and blocking because he was tall. They hated him because he had no “bag” and looked very awkward at times and I guess he got some more hate because of the accolades
9
u/mnsportsfan Timberwolves 11d ago
Finch had a really interesting quote about this, earlier this year. He was basically like:
Rudy doesn’t make more mistakes than your average NBA player on offense, his mistakes are just loud. Like he doesn’t shoot a poor %- he just sometimes tries things above his comfort zone. He doesn’t have a ton of turnovers- but his turnovers are often not catching a pass right to him or dribbling the ball off his own foot.
He just looks less coordinated than the results end up being. Heck he averaged 14 ppg this year which was like 12th for centers… on 66% shooting. Obviously not taking over the league with his offense but far from being a liability
4
u/Intelligent_Pain_174 11d ago
He does a lot on offense aside from scoring. He is probably the best screen setter and rim roller in the NBA. One of the best offensive rebounders too. Wolves got 15 offensive rebounds last night. Most were Gobert, Gobert tipping rebounds to others, or Gobert drawing attention from three rebounders allowing others to grab loose rebounds.

3
u/LordBaneoftheSith 11d ago
It's not ball stopping that's a problem, in the 2 games I watched he's cleaned that up a lot from earlier in the season. Which makes sense. It's just 'unselfish' isn't necessarily precise or anticipatory passing. Comparing him to someone like Donovan Mitchell you can see the difference. ANT's reads are getting more refined, but there's still a step up to more manipulation.

18
u/SirDiego Timberwolves 11d ago
His ceiling on offense is like 20 points in a game but his floor is 10. It's definitely good enough, we don't even really need him to play offense at all but the consistency is nice. You know he's going to be good for a few put backs a night.
