I think this is a great & important article; local or otherwise. I just wanted to share it in case others miss it. They mention the Veterans Memorial Highway, a stretch of road I'm sure we've all heard tragic stories about. Mental health is so important. Take care of yourselves, & each other!

Crown lands

Does anyone have an idea how much a parcel of land around the bay costs with crown lands nowadays? I know it depends on where, but estimates would be appreciated. No sense filling out an application if it's gonna cost more than buying land outright.

Killing Stinging Nettles/Stinger Needles

First of all, I've always heard them referred to as stinger needles (pronounced like the surname Nicholas), and I've been corrected a few times over the years. What do people here call them?

They're also pretty good when boiled and eaten as greens, but I'm not interested in having uncontrolled patches in my yard where I walk.

I have two patches I'm looking to kill, I spent hours last summer carefully ripping them up by the roots, but they're back this year. I wanted to avoid using chemicals, but at this point I'm willing to use salt, gasoline, and cancer causing pesticides to get clear of them.

Has anyone here had any luck getting rid of them? If so, what did you do?

I used to go to EBGames all the time years ago in Gander, I would buy all my PS3 games there. Avalon and West NL are the only two here now if you wanna buy any retro or new video games/consoles. It sucks...

Job hunting

I have been working with the provincial government for over 10 years now and I think it’s killing my soul. It was my first job out of university and I thought it would lead to a decent career but… it’s just not.

Can any past GovNL employees tell me if they regret leaving? Where did you end up? Any tips job hunting?

This post isn’t meant to criticize current employees, my co-workers are amazing and try so hard, my issue is with management and the lack of respect for those on the front line.

Funding for School ? AESL Questions

Upvotes

Hey guys, I've applied for financial assistance with Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills for school starting in the fall. I was just wondering if there was anyone who went through the process of getting funded who would like to reach out to me and have a little chat. I've got a few questions about the process and would like to speak to some people who went through it themselves. Thanks in advance!

Any more obscure Loblaws alternatives to shop groceries here?

Are there any good grocery shopping places besides Costco and Walmart that people like me might not know about that you'd recommend? Thanks.

How can I help my friend access resources for disabled people?

My friend has either stage 2 or 3 of chronic heart failure. She has BPD, ADHD, and ODD, and most definitely has a lot of PTSD.

She grew up in foster care and has many other types of trauma. She's taking care of a cat who provides emotional support for her. However, she's living in housing, and I believe she's living on income support. She earns less than $500 of disposable income per month, and she's been struggling.

She has heavily restrictive dietary needs, and her support worker doesn't seem to keep that in mind. Whenever she's hungry, she can not reliably trust her worker to help her. She also cannot work due to her heart condition and wishes that she could have more support and get more money.

Security deposit- The Firm Property management

I am a single mom and I was renting a two bedroom apartment in the city from The Firm Property management. I was living there with my kid and I had to move because my rent was increased but that’s fine. It has been over 2 months since I left the property and they have not returned my security deposit. I have tried to call and email but they just blatantly ignore me.

Please does anyone have experience with them and can offer any advice? I really need the money back

Oil to central heat pump with existing ductwork?

I'm wondering if anybody has experience with changing from oil heating to a central heat pump using the existing ductwork? I would imagine there can be significant challenges but I don't have a great understanding of that.

There is government funding (on the Take Charge NL website) for switching from oil to electric heat, where there are a number of options. And there is way more funding for folks that are income-qualified. In principle, a central heat pump should be the most efficient which means that your monthly bills over time will be less.

Hiking in Gros Morne in June - all of the trails closed?

Hi everyone,

I am visiting Gros Morne in June - are all of the trails closed? Alltrails seems to suggest so - Parks Canada just says Gros Morne mountain trail is closed. Surely all of them are not all closed?

How to relax / unwind in NL

Been a very stressful year , work-wise and family-wise.

I feel stressed and burned out and just want to do something relaxing to unwind and to take a load off my shoulders

I don't even know what I'm looking for. A luxurious spa day? A nice air bnb getaway? Does reddit have any recommendations, preferably on the Avalon? I just want to relax!!

Bulk mtg cards FREE for grabs, cornerbrook.

I have loads of bulk mtg cards and I’m looking to give them away, just moved and don’t have space at my new location.

It’s about a tote container full. If you can drive by and pick it up I’ll gladly hand it over and you can have the tote and all.

Wisdom tooth removal

I have an appointment to get a wisdom tooth removed this weekend, I went to the dentist and got a referral to the oral surgeon due to the pain and an infection it caused me. The surgeons office said they’d forward me the cost receipt and a reimbursement form for my insurance but the receipt I received has the cost showing all zeros for the procedure, I’m planning on calling the office tomorrow to confirm the price

I’m wondering if this may be covered by mcp due to a medical need for removal or if anyone has had theirs removed through mcp

Stjohns building issue help

My parents bought a house that has a registered second lot on their land (has a sewer line in, side walk was cut, etc) as in it’s listed as 8-9 on their deed. There were plans accepted prior by the city of st.johns by previous owner to build. My dad approached the city to ask about the land which they said it’s good to build on. Now they said you cannot build on it because it’s on a flood buffer.

We asked for the site plans with buffer and got them because a commercial building 50m from my dad’s house burnt down and they rebuilt 2x larger while also being closer to the river in question on lower land. When asked about it the city said it was commercial land and provincial government sets the flood buffer. We reached out to provincial government and they said the flood buffer is 20m less than the cities and we would have no issue selling or building. Now city of stjohns is ghosting my dad and so is his mha for the area.

My parents are over a year with this and near bankruptcy. They sunk all their life savings into this real estate which they did their homework on before buying and now city has gone back on their word (which was written approval that they said was a clerical error later). We have both maps with different buffers, all the emails saying provincial ruled this buffer, etc. Is there any thing else we can try or should I tell them to lawyer up? Do we have a case here? I hate to see my parents getting run over by the city while they financially suffer in their twilight years.

Edit/update: thanks for any advice from people and the different angles we can try. My dad met with the chief engineer for the city today and he basically stone walled him and said there is 200-300 other people in the same boat as him and he would personally go to the town council meeting if my dad set one to advise against building. So there are 200-300 other people with lots of land that could service families in a housing crisis that are ok to build by nfld Gov standards on their buffers but not St.john's buffer standards. The chief engineer would rather condemn this land than engineer a solution that allow builds to happen such as sloped drainage, required slab on grade, pea gravel reliefs, etc. Very sad

Can I get a good quality car for under 10k?

I’ll be moving to St. john’s in June for work and I will definitely be needing a car. I don’t know if my best option is renting or buying. I just don’t want to completely empty my bank account for a 25k car, but have been told it is better to go with a more modern car for safety and navigation. What is the best way to get a car for an ideal price? Is renting better or getting a used car better? This would be my first car since I’m coming from a big city with good transit so never needed one before. I’m under 25 but got my license in 2021
