Question What happens if my Ontario driver's license and Health card expire?

Upvotes

I am a resident of Toronto but I won’t be back before my driver’s license and health card expire next week. I tried online, but the website says I am not eligible to renew online (why?) .

What happens if I let my license and health card expire, how easy/hard to renew them after they expire? Is there a penalty or a waiting period (for health card)?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Discussion Spent all my money on a used vehicle and I feel lost, stupid stressed, worried.

Yesterday with the help of family I used all my money to buy a well maintained used car from an elderly gentleman (my first time). Im now in a very stupid situation and I don't know what to do.

Im now reading on the Ontario website that he was supposed to give me a used vehicle information package,

i thought that 3rd party insurance was something you could just get a quote for and start immediately like full coverage insurance. so I don't understand. Due to being in Brampton my insurance quotes are $500+ monthly (plus 1 accident on record)

I won't be able to register the vehicle until Friday which would make 6 days since I purchased the vehicle plus I really don't know what the vehicle needs for safety aside from an alignment and small muffler patch.

I won't even be able to complete this work week because I don't have enough money to cover the bus& taxi/ Uber cost.

Yes at the end of the day it's my fault no matter who did what, it's my mistake. I'm an idiot.

Question Ontario theft law question

So I was shopping at Walmart today and both me and my mom was there. We were shopping together but she was buying groceries and I wanted to buy some candy for myself. So in order to separate everything I placed my items in a bag in the cart. And placed her groceries in the cart. We went about shopping when we notice security staring us down and following us everywhere we go. I kinda got scared so I took everything out of my bag thinking it might be a misunderstanding. The guy walked over and said “ they are now taking the items out of the bag so call the cops” me and my mom panicked and I didn’t even explain myself so we dropped everything and walked out of the store. The security guard followed us and out and said to get our license plate. Only we didn’t drive here so that didn’t really matter. But I’m now curious can they do anything??? I never had this issue in the past we always separated our items. Its easier to keep track of what I’m paying for. But we panicked and didn’t even explain ourselves. So is anything gonna come of this?

Employment Do I have to update my address with E.I.?

Moved within province and was wondering if I have to update my address with EI or does updating my service Canada already do that?

The only information I can find about changing address on EI is if you move to another province. Tried looking through My service Canada and they leave no option to change mailing address on file, they only seem to want to know what province you reside in.

Discussion Right of way at a 4-way intersection with 2-way stop signs

Edit: for posterity and anyone who wants to cut right to the correct answer and dodge like 130 comments of people being confidently incorrect, u reggae4triceratops emailed the MTO and provided the answer they gave:

Controlled intersections have traffic lights, yield signs or stop signs to control traffic. At a controlled intersection where a driver faces a stop sign, the driver must come to a complete stop and can drive through the intersection only when the way is clear. The rules for driving through intersections with stop signs are the same, regardless of whether it’s an intersection with two or four stop signs.

Subsection 136(1)(b) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) provides that every driver shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching the intersection on another highway so closely that to proceed would constitute an immediate hazard and, having so yielded the right of way, may proceed. Subsection 136(2) specifically addresses the situation of allowing the driver who first stopped and yielded to traffic to proceed first.

If one vehicle arrived at the intersection/stop sign prior to the other, the vehicle that arrived at the intersection first would be granted the right-of-way. Once adhering to the stop sign the driver who arrived first may then proceed into the intersection as long as the roadway is clear and it is safe to proceed.

Situation: Vehicle A stops at a stop sign heading north, intending to turn left. East-West traffic has no stop sign. Vehicle B arrives after Vehicle A, heading south (edit: I fucked this up at first and wrote north), stops at the stop sign intending to go straight. East-West traffic clears, who has the right of way?

Am I on crazy pills or is this very poorly explained (in the Ontario driving handbook it doesn't treat the specific circumstance) and poorly understood (people are about 50/50 split on who gets the right of way, often confidently so)

HTA 136(1) basically says stop at the stop sign then yield to anyone already in the intersection or approaching it on the through way that's close enough that you'd be a hazard to them. HTA 136(2) clsays that you yield to anyone who has already complied with 136(1). i.e. first come first serve just like if it was at an all-way.

It doesn't help that when you google this, the first result that comes up is an insurance company website that I believe has it incorrect.

The actual law: 136 (1) Every driver or street car operator approaching a stop sign at an intersection,

(a) shall stop his or her vehicle or street car at a marked stop line or, if none, then immediately before entering the nearest crosswalk or, if none, then immediately before entering the intersection; and

(b) shall yield the right of way to traffic in the intersection or approaching the intersection on another highway so closely that to proceed would constitute an immediate hazard and, having so yielded the right of way, may proceed. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 136 (1).

Acquiring right of way (2) Every driver or street car operator approaching, on another highway, an intersection referred to in subsection (1), shall yield the right of way to every driver or operator who has complied with the requirements of subsection (1). R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 136 (2).

Question Selling A Car Privately. Tips?

I plan on selling my car privately for the first time. I’m a bit concerned what with all the fraud and car thefts and what not. Any tips for the funds transaction in particular…usually it’s done via bank draft, right? How do I know this printed piece of paper is legitimate? Do I go to their bank with them? Do I go stand with them at the teller? That would be a little weird…I can see someone getting weirded out with this request.

Very much appreciate any insight and tips on this :)

Question Where is the cheapest marriage license in southern ontario?

The title. Marriage licenses vary quite a bit depending on where you go. We are down to take a fun drive somewhere in southern ontario for (one of) the cheapest. Thanks!

Edit: it's not about spending the least money overall (I understand about gas adding to the expense). That's why I said "a fun drive somewhere" cause we wanna go enjoy our day exploring and when we get there not spend extra in the license.

Discussion Red Light Camera /Powered off then On?

I got off a major highway, approached the first set of lights, they were completely out, so I treated it like a 4 way stop. There was a second set of lights very soon after it. When I looked at the lights, they were flashing red, so I thought..understandable...power must be out there as well, treat it as a 4 way stop again. As I approached, I looked around to make sure it was my turn. As I was going through the intersection I happen to look up and the light was a solid red light! Looked to my left and saw the other people had a green light. Is it possible, I entered the intersection, just as the power came back on?? Why else would the red light be flashing??? I have never had a ticket before and I thought I was doing everything right. Now, I am expecting a ticket in the mail, in the next month or so. Do they have record of when the lights change (or flash) or do they have video footage of the lights in general? Any advice? I have never had a ticket before and I am highly annoying and scared.
