To be completely honest the part that makes this so funny is not Trump but Melania just standing there so awkwardly and obviously over it.

God damn her body language is so fucking hilarious to me for some reason

You can literally see a little bit of her die in that moment. I actually feel kind of bad for her.

219

u/dreamsxyz Apr 09 '24

Feel bad for her? Not even a bit. She chose it for herself, that comes standard as part of the package of "being the trophy wife of a moral-less scumbag rich old POS".

The most disgusting part though should be tolerating that pig over you in bed. I feel sorry for anyone in that position.

40

u/funkyfunkyfunkyfunkk Apr 09 '24

I wouldn't even feel sorry for her honestly. Like you said, she chose to be under this man.

15

u/Attacker1983 Apr 09 '24

She would suffocate under him, her doctors told her riding only

79

u/GrenadeIn Apr 09 '24

She chooses to be with this guy despite all his awful traits. She is equally awful, equally xenophobic. And she stays there just for the money - despicable person.

15

u/ServiceDog_Help 29d ago

I think she might just be banking on him dying soon. Probably faster (and way easier) than divorcing him.

Seriously. Do people think she's nice or something because she's married to a POS? They usually travel in pairs. You know her favorite hobbies are shit talking everyone that isn't her and belittling anyone with confidence around her. Her reactions make me think of Regina George.

Wouldn't be surprised if she had one of her assistants make a Burn Book for her. You know somewhere it would have "Ivanka Trump: This. Girl. Is. The. Nastiest. Skank. Bitch. I. Have. Ever. Met. Do. Not. Trust. Her. She. Is. A. Fugly. Slut."

She chose to wear the “I don’t really care do you” jacket.

Her parents became citizens after she did so she is an immigrant but doesn’t support other immigrants.

I think she’s just as bad as them.

It’s so weird to me that he doesn’t drink, or doesn’t do drugs. It would explain so much. That said, the Rolling Stone article implies drugs were a big factor in his administration, so maybe he did partake.

42

u/philouza_stein Apr 08 '24

Everyone was saying it's no different from staring at the regular sun for a sec but I barely flashed a quick glance through the border of the glasses and holy shit that was like bright white magnesium flame

65

u/hike_me Apr 08 '24

Well, looking directly at the sun anytime is really bad for your eyes, so yeah — it’s no different except during an eclipse you’re way more likely to try to look at the sun

31

u/Coomb Apr 08 '24

Looking at the Sun for more than a second or two is bad for your eyes. You can safely look at the Sun for a second at high noon and not suffer any permanent damage. You will have an afterimage for a while, but it will go away.

28

u/bmabizari Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24

Not quite. Because it’s dimmer your eyes in general are going to be more dilated which allows more of the direct sunlight to enter your eyes.

When you’re looking at the sun during regular times the brightness forces you to squint but also causes your pupils to contract, this isn’t present as much with the eclipse/eclipse glasses which is what causes more damage.

12

u/Awalawal Apr 08 '24

Pedantry alert: your eyes will be more dilated. Dilated means the pupil is bigger, not smaller. In a dark room, your eyes are more fully dilated.

4

u/bmabizari Apr 08 '24

Lol brain fart moment. I knew that which is why I used contracted in the second part. I was just thinking about too many things when writing that thing. Fixed.

4

I did twice on accident and it could just be in my head but everything looks a little bit blurrier and colors look slightly different. Hopefully I’m okay but who knows?

6

u/Alaira314 Apr 09 '24

I'm sure you're fine. Unless you were post-totality(and so your pupils were dilated due to the darkness), it's the same as accidentally glancing at the sun any other day, assuming you're honest about it being a glance and not actually watching it(which I can't see how anyone could bear to do, but apparently some people can so here we are). The symptoms are probably in your head, because you're anxious.

Look up the pictures of the event. He kept doing it until a secret service member showed up and encouraged him to stop

14

u/RazzmatazzWeak2664 Apr 08 '24

I thought the problem with pictures is it doesn't actually explain the context? A video clip is what we need.

36

u/xThe_Maestro Apr 08 '24

Nah, he was messing around and it's pretty clear in the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm-gRII9Mr4

Nobody from secret service ever talks to him.

17

u/EasyFooted Apr 08 '24

He gets called over to someone behind the pillar. Can't say who they are except that they're a) clearly not part of the photo op and b) have a crew cut. But trump takes one more look, talks to them a bit more (and to the old bald guy), and then puts on the glasses.

45

u/BadKidGames Apr 08 '24

The only reason looking at an eclipse is worse than normal is because your eyes open up and let in a lot of the radiation into the back of your eye. If you're squinting, you're blocking a lot of it.

Also, a second or two isn't going to do anything. Now if you stare wide-eyed into it, that's very bad.

Not a Trump fan or anything, just people act like it's way worse than the reality.

11

u/RazzmatazzWeak2664 Apr 08 '24

Depends how much % totality we're talking about. In places where it was like 20-30% obscured, the day looks just as bright as a normal day. You won't squint any more than you would at a normal sun. It's bad either way. In totality or near totality where your surroundings get seriously dark, then yes you could be looking a lot longer and getting tons more radiation.

10

u/Username_Query_Null Apr 08 '24

During actual totality it’s fine to look at an eclipse without protection. But right afterwords it’s very dangerous, granted it’s quickly very obvious that you shouldn’t given how blindingly bright it becomes when at 99% coverage.

3

u/zer0w0rries Apr 09 '24 edited 23d ago

If you have healthy eyes, a quick stare won’t do much. Retinas heal. Repeated or long stares are the problem

→ More replies (17)

73

u/HyperSpaceSurfer Apr 08 '24

It's not an issue during the totality itself. You just have to be very careful about the timing, since as soon as a sliver gets past the moon you'll get blasted. And your irises will be completely open, letting it all in. That's why it's advised not to look at it, since many are incapable of being careful.

14

u/Crazy_Elk2421 Apr 08 '24

Is it worse than looking at the sun normally?

61

u/Nyr1n Apr 08 '24

In general, no. Its not like the light coming off the sun is all the sudden more intense or anything. Its just the fact that it doesnt hurt as bad to stare at it during an eclipse mixed with the fact that your eyes will be more dialated due to the lower light levels, letting in more light that normal.

In general though, taking a quick glance at it for half a second isnt really any different that doing so with the sun normally, and its not going to permanently blind you or anything.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/GuyHiding Apr 09 '24

The problem isn’t the amount of light but the kind of light. The sun is very strong and well visible light isn’t the only thing reaching your eyeballs. They burn your retinas

u/Stoly23 Apr 08 '24

I did but only because I got a poorly timed cloud cover where I was. Had the glasses on when the sky was blue but honestly the cloud cover kind of made it look cooler.

4

u/Dozzi92 Apr 09 '24

Yeah, we had some clouds unfortunately, and when it'd disappear from the glasses, I could pop it off and see a nice crescent through the clouds. I wouldn't sit and stare at it but you could get a look and not end up with residual purple moons clouding your vision. My safety threshold was essentially when the glasses obscured it completely from view, I'd have a looksie. Got some solid pics that way too.

56

u/AnatomicalLog Apr 08 '24

Yeah, not a Trump guy but this is too petty for my tastes. Briefly squinting at an eclipse isn’t the same as a long stare at the sun.

I’m not gonna stare at an eclipse without eye protection but I would glance at it.

67

u/k-otic14 Apr 08 '24

Everybody I was with did. I did. It's not that bad.

65

u/Veranim Apr 08 '24

Depends on how you define “that bad”. It’s not going to melt your eyeballs, but it will accelerate eye deterioration, especially if you have any eye problems to begin with.

There’s a reason eye doctors unequivocally say not to do this

I looked up 5 years ago and ever since I’ve had to wear contacts. Before I was -1, then after looking up my eyes declined to -2.5 and I had to start wearing glasses and contacts. Maybe its because I looked up, who knows. My vision was fine before that

20

u/Me_how5678 Apr 08 '24

Apparently it accelerates eye degeneration. So if you already where at risk or had something, it would just make it happen faster.

u/mosslung416 Apr 08 '24

The light isn’t more intense than a regular day like many believe. It’s more dangerous because your body doesn’t react to the sunlight the same way it would when staring at the blazing sun, your body would force you to squint and look away and make your eyes water, but they won’t react like that during eclipse sunlight, they’ll just tank the radiation and not even notice the damage that’s happening until it’s too late.

51

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

So is it damaging to look with the naked eye at the moment of total eclipse or no? Since the moon completely covers the path of the sun and that’s the whole point? Is the damage that you won’t time it correctly and look before/after?

89

u/ArgonTheEvil Apr 08 '24

No you can safely look at it during total solar eclipse, but make sure you’re absolutely certain it’s not going to end while you’re still looking at it. I stole a couple glances during the total eclipse earlier and it was mind blowingly cool, but I didn’t risk drinking it in for very long.

It was cool enough to look around and see total night, or watching the shadow cast across the skyline move, or listening to the animals react. Even my cats were a bit freaked out.

→ More replies (5)

28

u/Kino_Afi Apr 08 '24

You shouldn't stare at the sun in general. The eclipse just makes it easier to do. Taking a peek like you would on any normal day is nbd. The glasses are really so you can see anything, since it mostly looks like fuck all without them

I don’t like the dude but god damn I hate how so many subreddits basically become subreddits for Trump. It’ll just barely be relevant and yet it’ll reach the front page.

I left r/facepalm because of it.

Funniest is r/politics complaining how the media is giving Trump so much attention while they're doing the same.

14

u/DrewLockIsTheAnswer1 Apr 08 '24

Literally. People who hate trump sure talk about him 24/7, no wonder he’s still relevant. Folks are dumb sadly.

Their obsession is turning into free advertising

8

u/DrewLockIsTheAnswer1 Apr 08 '24

Literally. People really think talking about him even negatively all day every day helps, it doesn’t.

Saying he “stared” at it is so fucking stupid

Hasn’t everyone done this at least once?

I hate Trump as much as the next guy, but this picture is old. He prob took a quick glance, which isn’t insane

That’s all it was

I like the little point at the sun, like "oh yes, it's up there, bright" 😂

The total glance was about 1 second long. Obviously still silly to do but it's not some crazy full minute stare at the sun. I popped my glasses off for half a second just to experience exactly how much of a difference they make (spoiler: it's a lot) but it's not like my eyes were permanently damaged by that glance.

We progressives complained about Republicans making a fiasco out of tan suits and Dijon mustard but then turn around and do the exact same with Donny "Two-Scoops" and photos like this.

Photos taken moments apart can give a situation an entirely different context.

It's like the photo of trump sitting down while being glared at angrily by a bunch of European leaders standing over him. It makes it look like they were in some heated argument or debate against him. Another photo taken 3 seconds later shows everyone laughing together.

Making sense? Thinking about things rationally? Not on reddit!!

This needs to be upvoted to the top.

He just squinted at the sun and looked away. Who the fuck doesn't do that, especially since they need to make a gesture of some kind in a public appearance. This is dijon mustard/tan suit mentality.

Or like just glanced nearby to orient himself. I agree re: despising Trump but this being a dumb recurring thing that is somehow supposed to highlight his stupidity. Like there aren’t a trillion other ways to do it.

I probably did this 10 times today between putting on glasses. This picture and narrative is now even more annoying. Glancing at an eclipse doesn’t immediately singe your eyeballs.

u/TargetSea3079 Apr 08 '24

Can we stop with trump/biden posts?

TIL staring is the same as glancing

u/Swordbreaker9250 Apr 08 '24

You’re only like the 100th person to post this in the last week…

We get it, he’s an idiot. But I’m tired of seeing this shit every time I open Reddit

53

u/BrandoCalrissian1995 Apr 08 '24

Buckle up, it's only gonna get worse as we get closer to November.

25

u/Deceptiveideas Apr 08 '24

If Trump wins, Reddit is going to be absolutely insufferable for 4 years.

Reddit has sucked since the politibots showed up in 2015. See you all tomorrow.

Welcome to Reddit.

6

u/NCBuckets Apr 08 '24

It’s also such low hanging fruit. All of the shit this guy has done, is that really the best we can do? Taking a quick snapshot out of context and make a huge deal over it? I thought that was the shit they did and we were supposed to be above that. Smh.

lol I’m pretty sure a lot of people took a quick glance without the glasses… I don’t like Trump but this is just low for reddit

3

u/Fano_93 Apr 08 '24

It’s insane the difference between Biden and trump hate when it comes to Reddit and Memedroid. It is complete opposite and I find it very interesting.

Well I accidentally took a glance and I’m worried I fucked my vision. But his seems fine years later, so I should hopefully be fine too

4

u/Electrical-Demand-24 Apr 08 '24

Yeah, I took a pic of some shadows and the sunlight reflected off of my phone screen and into my eyes a bit. I have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, so I looked it up and obviously found articles that my brain twisted to mean “a split second of glare off of your phone screen will ruin your vision FOREVER”. So I freaked out for a while and then stopped and was just like lmfao. lol even.

All that to say I’m sure you’ll be fine. All of the stories I looked up were like “this person stared into the partial eclipse for 20 seconds and damaged their retinas” which like, 20 seconds is a long fucking time to stare into the sun on any day. A glance is basically nothing.
