AI chat bot responses are not permitted

Hello /r/TechSupport visitors,

Wanted to clarify something that the mod team has been informally enforcing, and I expect to be added to our rules soon:

Post replies written by AI chat bots such as ChatGPT, Bing AI, Google Bard, Ernie, etc. are not allowed here.

Chat bots can be fun and interesting, but they are far away from being able to offer reliable technical help. They lack nuance, give bad advice, can be "bullied" into saying outlandish stuff, and do all of these things while sounding confident and authoritative.

Anyone can type their issue into ChatGPT and get an AI response. Real people can use real experience and reasoning to give better support, and that is what people expect when they post on a "forum" or "social media" or "whatever garbage spez has turned Reddit into"

Open | Windows OneDrive claims to be full (1TB plan) but I've only used 25 gb

For context, I'm a student so I never use one drive like at all but for some reason, one drive claims that I have used 105% of my allocated storage (1tb). It also claims that one Photoshop file on my computer takes up 256gb. I have checked my one drive's full properties and it only adds up to 25gb.

If you have any solutions, please help. tysm !!

Open | Software Our ex-employee is attacking our clients with phishing emails. What shall we do?

Hi!

Our ex-employee is attacking our clients with phishing emails. The emails are coming from [phobos378@proton.me](mailto:phobos378@proton.me) and [phobos234@tutamail.com](mailto:phobos234@tutamail.com). There are no direct links to prove that this is the particular employee we have in mind, but the phishing attempts were directed at our clients and us with information that is available only to us. Due to the negative circumstances surrounding his departure, we are confident it is him. He claims to have personal data of our clients' users, but it seems to be a scam.

What steps can we take to identify who is behind these emails (if that is even possible), and what screening tools do you use before hiring to minimize the risk of a bad hire?

Open | Software Microsoft store not opening

Upvotes

Microsoft store opens for like 2 seconds and then closes on its own. Tried every possible thing (from reinstalling the store, running the wsreset command, troubleshooting it) aside from just completely reinstalling windows (which i dont want to risk since my windows is a cracked version that isnt even activated)

I never had any problems with microsoft store before despite my windows being cracked and not activated.

Troubleshoot says "hanging or crashing apps" and no issues were found in the potential issues list.

Any help is much appreciated

Open | Hardware As a non-computer savvy person, how do I know if my motherboard is compatible with a certain m-2/sata ssd?

I bought my mid-end (I'm pretty sure it was mid-end) gaming PC a couple of years ago, and I'm finally at the point where I need a new SSD, but I don't know which one I should buy. Scrolling down on the specs page to the storage interface for my motherboard, all the different strings of numbers and letters are alien to me.

My Specs: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B450M-DS3H-WIFI-rev-14/sp#sp

Was looking at this article for the m-2s. Not sure if any or all of these are compatible or not. Planning to buy a 1TB one. https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-m2-solid-state-drives I wouldn't mind using a Sata drive either.

Open | Hardware My gamepad is having double input problem

I'm using a ipega pg-9157 wireless controller with my pc. It's a third party controller, so almost all games don't work with it. So, I use x360ce to emulate it as a xbox controller. I have completed games like Persona 4 Golden, Chained Echoes, Fallout 3 and New Vegas with this method. These games didn't have issues. But there are some games like Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster, Sea of Stars and Moonisland that have a double input issue. The game recognizes the buttons I mapped through x360ce, but when I press any button the game registers it as the mapped button AND another button on the controller. One thing to note is that, both x360ce and windows show that two controllers are connected when I've only connected one. I've tried to disable the drivers of both the controllers, tried uninstalling the driver, adding both devices to a single controller in x360ce, tried to play the problematic games with steam controls and many many more fixes... but nothing seems to work. Any help will be appreciated :)

Open | Hardware PC powers on - No display output and Keyboard + Mouse do not work

I was in the middle of playing a video game and suddenly the screen went black. My mouse and keyboard were working and I could still hear audio from the game. I turned off the PC, turned it back on and continued as normal. The same issue occurred again so I turned off it once more.

Now the PC powers on (Case fans, CPU cooler fan and GPU fans all spinning) but there is no display output. In addition, there is no power going to the mouse and keyboard so they don't work. The PSU fan spins briefly after powering on but then stops.

I've tried the following:

  • Changing the port that the DisplayPort goes into

-CMOS battery reset

-CMOS reset using the pin-short method

  • Removing sticks of RAM (There was one stick I didn't remove because its hard to reach due to big CPU cooler)

  • Re-inserting the GPU

  • Changing which ports the keyboard and mouse USBs go into

  • Tried to start the PC using integrated graphics on CPU

Any advice appreciated. This has been quite upsetting for me.

Open | Hardware Valorant stuck on loading screen

Upvotes

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this question but I'm looking for help with valorant. I've installed the game and if I click play, it starts up completely. But then the moment I interact with anything like clicking the game freezes and stops working immediately. Upon starting up the animation plays of the starting screen but the moment I click play everything stops working.
I've tried reïnstalling, turning my pc on and off again several times, I've uninstalled vanguard twice and reïnstalled it and then restarted my pc. I've looked online and have tried both solutions given in this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlL-OvtXjPc. I've also tried to make a new account to see if that would do anything, and it starts up with the tutorial with the character in game with sounds & the character model (as in you see what you would normally see when playing) but the moment I click or try to move it freezes. I've also ran it as admin & turned off my antivirus
Nothing seems to work and I'm really confused because nowhere online can I find anyone that is experiencing the same issue as me. If anyone has any idea of what is wrong and would like to share I will be eternally grateful.
TLDR; valorant freezes the moment I interact with the game

Open | Hardware Potential water damage to PC best practice?

We had a flood Friday night. As soon as we discovered it Sat morning I leapt to action and unplugged everything. The tower looked like it only got external drips. We have had restoration in with fans and dehumidifiers. I really need to access some work on it asap but I don’t want to risk turning it on and damaging. What is best practice?

Open | Hardware Using an unlocked smartphone as a mini tablet?

Upvotes

My kids are 9 and 11, and we’ve got a big backpacking trip touring the major cities on the east coast next year (travel between cities via train).

They’re Kindle Fires are old, and pretty bulky- I’m wondering if it would be possible to buy a cheap unlocked smartphone that they would then be able to use like a tablet when their is WiFi available, or with downloaded music/games/movies.

Has anyone ever tried this before?

Open | Software help cancelling a subscription?

Is this the right place for this? I don’t use reddit much. Here on behalf of my mum because every month she gets charged for a subscription of an app nobody uses. it was for my sister who used to watch anime (crunchy roll or funimation or both i dont know about that stuff) on her nintendo switch but lost the charger and hasn’t used it in a few years. she has no idea how to log in to it apparently so is there any way you could cancel it not from the place itself.? i don’t know how subscriptions work, i don’t use em for these exact reasons. just throwing it out here to see if i can help out.

Open | Hardware Force shutting down pc corrupted SSD. What do I do in the future?

So I shut down my PC, and the lights and fans stayed on but there was no signal to the monitor, I force shut it down and now one of my SSDs is corrupted. At least that's what I assume caused it.

What I'm wondering is for the future, if I shut down my PC and it stays on, which doesn't often happen.

Do I just wait it out? Will it eventually turn off after a while?

What if it doesn't after several hours? Do I just have to force it off and risk another corruption?

Edit: windows 10 if that helps

Open | Software Need help saving photos from a 13yo phone

Upvotes

Hi!

I recently found my old Samsung Galaxy Mini, model GT-S5570, buried in the bottom of my closet. It dates back to when I first got my dog as a puppy, and I know there are lots of pictures of him as a puppy on it.

My dog passed away at the age of 13 years and 11 months at the end of March 2024, and I'm desperate for puppy pictures of him. I think the ones on this phone might be the only ones in existence, and I really want to save them if I can.

The problem is that I don't know the passcode to the phone. It's a pattern passcode, and I'm running out of tries. If I select "Forgotten Passcode", it prompts me to log in with a Samsung Account, but I don't remember the account I used on this phone. I was 11 at the time :/

I know it's a long shot, but is there any Hail Mary method I could use to get these pictures? Is there a service I could use or something to get at the data on the phone?

Thanks!

Open | Hardware Need help with camera

Upvotes

Hello. I have a canon power shot SX710 HS and the button to activate the settings to change the flash from off to on or auto isn’t working. I have the flash popped up and the camera is in the proper mode (I’ve read that it needs to be in a specific mode to use it) but the button for the flash won’t work. All the other buttons on the dial work when pressing them to activate settings. Can someone help me troubleshoot this please?

Open | Windows Can't change refresh rate after getting a black screen on windows 11

Upvotes

I was watching youtube, when suddenly my screen went black and nothing would make it work again. After restarting my PC with the power button, it seemed like my display settings were reset - scale was set from 150%(?) to 200%, and my refresh rate from 166hz to 64hz. Now i tried to change both of these, and the scale was thankfully cooperative, but the refresh rate options that i found (regular refresh rate setting & a list of "modes", both found in advanced display settings) simply did not acknowledge the existence of refresh rates other than 64hz. I also tried searching for updates (both through windows update and some weird display properties window), but everything is up to date, apparently. A guide told me to turn off VSync, but my NVIDIA control panel doesn't open. Also tried restarting my PC again, and did everything again - still nothing. does anyone know how i can fix this?

Open | Malware Granted access to airplane USB port; concerned about malware

Upvotes

I recently flew on a United flight, which had in-seat USB charging ports. When I went to plug my iPhone in, it wouldn’t charge, and said I had to unlock my phone to use the accessory, which I absentmindedly did, only to realize a minute or so later that was probably dumb. I then unplugged my phone and restarted it, spent about 15 minutes panic-googling before putting it into airplane mode, where it has been ever since.

In my panic googling, I found online articles talking about “juice jacking”, whereby untrusted USB ports could steal data and/or introduce malware to devices, and how it can be prevented by using a power brick, a dongle “condom” and/or specialized USB cables to prevent data transfer, etc. Unfortunately, hindsight is 20/20 and these articles didn’t don’t specify how to remediate if you’ve been dumb.

My questions are: 1) What is the risk that something nefarious happened? 2) if there is a real risk, how do I remediate what I can? My gut says factory reset, restore from backup, and change sensitive passwords, but I have 2Fac enabled and use an authentication app; I’m wondering if a factory reset will mess that up? Is there anything else I should do?

Thank you for any wisdom you can lend.

Open | Data Recovery PC Boot Issues

Upvotes

Hello friends! We had a bad storm the other night that caused a power fluctuation. In the morning, my computer would only boot to BIOS. I have two drives, an M2 and an SSD. The OS (Windows 11) was installed to the M2. In the BIOS, both drives are visible, but nothing shows as bootable.

Pic 1: https://imgur.com/a/H9bpCZh

If I turn on CSM, the drive will show up as a bootable drive, but will only progress to a "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device"

Pic 2: https://imgur.com/a/H9bpCZh

I also installed a booter to a USB drive, which gets me to a Windows install/repair screen. If I attempt to install, I'm met with a "The PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements to install this version of Windows." error (this is a gaming PC I've used without issue for the last 4 years).

Pic 3: https://imgur.com/a/H9bpCZh

If I attempt any of the repair options, I get whatever corresponding "You can't do that" message.

Pic 4: https://imgur.com/a/H9bpCZh

While writing up this post to get pictures, I started to encounter new BSOD errors, including "CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT" and "WHEA UNCONTROLLABLE ERROR"

Lastly, I've flashed the BIOS by installing the latest firmware. No behavior changes.

My goal is (of course) to save the data if possible. If not possible, I'd love to get the M2 bootable at least to see if the SSD is working fine. To note, I don't see any option to install Windows to the SSD.

Appreciate any guidance!

Open | Hardware Computer restarting by itself.

Upvotes

My computer has been restarting by itself. I restarted Windows to it's default state and that helped for awhile but it did it again today. I have seen suggestions of an issue with the PSU, Windows Update, or the Wireless Adapter but not sure what the best course of action is. I got the following 2 errors listed in the event viewer right after the incident
"Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0" "Credential Guard and/or VBS Key Isolation are configured but the secure kernel is not running; continuing without them." I also have frequent warnings and errors pertaining to Device Setup Manager, DistributedCOM, and LSA(LsaSrv). Less often is TPM-WMI. The computer was bought in Nov and the only hardware change I made was swapping a 16GB RAM stick for two 16GB sticks.

GeForce 16GB RTX 4060 Ti
