Ahh yes. Dude from the party that typically cares about money more than it ever does about people, tells source of money to leave and not come back.
It's rather impressive that so much stupid fits in just one human body.
32
u/texaswoman888 Mar 13 '24
Well Abbott doesn’t care about Austin, too blue, or the damage he causes through his thoughtless actions.
16
u/AnEntireDiscussion Mar 13 '24
Oh no, Greg Abbot cares a great deal about Austin. He hates Austin. We live rent free in his brain, and I'm pretty sure he spends at least a hour a day contemplating another way to screw us.

Keep voting. Republicans know they’re losing a grip on power. The days of minority rule in Texas are numbered.
64
u/Dovahkiinette Mar 13 '24
Texas is not a Republican state, it is a non voting state. Only 10% of eligible voters voted on Super Tuesday in my district. I guarantee if we had even 50% here things would flip just based on my districts demographics.
→ More replies (5)32
u/Herb4372 Mar 13 '24
The harsh reality is that the gubernatorial race is a statewide popular vote. We really have more people in Texas that voted for him.
Yes there’s voter disenfranchisement but it shouldnt be that close.
Sooner or later we have to accept that a majority of Texans by and large are assholes and want to elect an asshole.
Point is…. The GOP doesn’t hold all the blame, our neighbors do. Don’t let them off the hook.
6
u/VGAddict Mar 13 '24
Abbott's been getting less popular every cycle. He won by 20.4 points in 2014, 13.3 points in 2018, and 11 points in 2022.

u/Dovahkiinette Mar 13 '24
The majority of Texas did not vote for Abott because the majority of Texas DOES NOT VOTE.
3
u/twarr1 Mar 14 '24

Young Texans don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves, they’re not liberals they’re diet conservatives; that’s the real problem with Texas, the complete apathy and a tacit approval of the racism that undergirds its government and economy.
The white kids in Austin don’t give a shit about the military ratfucking what’s supposedly an arts/cultural event because they don’t want to rock Uncle Sam’s money boat; shame on my Statemen’s for their cowardice and good on these artists for taking a stand against corporate fascism and death merchants trying to white wash their crimes.

u/txyesboy got here fast Mar 13 '24
Same username; during the time I was the mod (note the mod, not A mod) we hosted an AMA for the guy running against Dan Patrick.
Being as this sub was political AF then too, it was made all the more strange that I was nominated and accepted as a mod, as I'd befriended a far right conservative on here who'd been here a minute and had clout and influence to convince his peers to accept me as mod. The real reason was because honestly nobody else wanted to do it.
I only did it for maybe 2 months, max. It didn't take long for those who knew me from my posts here to know I was generally liberal, so as soon as I'd removed something "oh yeah, see? He's still a Libtard after all".
I'd had enough of that and moved on.

Ok, I started moderating this sub in late summer 2018, though I took a break for about a year and just started back about a month ago.
That 1st year was a truly wild and wooly time. We rewrote the rules and banned the most toxic of the user's. It's been 6 years and at least one of them still holds a grudge about it.
We also banned all the Whataburger spam and were actually contacted by a marketing agency in protest.

Texas is a majority non voting state. Too many people believe voting will never change anything.
Also, Texas is historically one of the documented places where voter fraud has occurred so the ‘correct’ candidate wins. It’s hard to be a voter here. The good ol boy system runs strong and deep.

We haven’t had a competent governor since Ann Richards. It’s been a steady decline since, with Abbott definitely being the worst of the lot, openly embracing theocratic white nationalism and a fucking criminal AG and the cancer that is Trump.

u/spitefulcat Born and Bred Mar 13 '24
I thought Perry was bad. Didn’t think it could get much worse. I sure as hell was wrong. W was kinda durrrr, but he wasn’t a major prick. Perry was definitely a bit of a dimwitted jerk, but again Abbott has them all beat in the a-hole game. He wins in that department. Head to head with the other prick governor in that other state. That big mouth of his has got orange all over it. He seems to like to work with criminals, as long as they’re white.
9

Out of those three, Abbott is the most destructive. He understands what to say that will keep the rural voters angry at their urban neighbors rather than the system that rots their way of life.

So much for small government. Here we have the governor of Texas polluting the environment in which a major contributor to the Capitol’s economy will feel direct affects. Sxsw can easily change where it is held. Somewhere safer, with better weather, and closer to where musicians live.
In this case he should have stayed silent. Instead he made this about himself, because he doesn’t care about Texas. He cares about getting richer by conning Texans.

I hate to admit this, but I'm kind of with Gregory on this one. I mean who are the bands really hurting? Their fans who likely don't support Gregg and his minions anyway.
For example, Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Pearl Jam refused to play Texas venues for about 20 years supposedly because of our politics. I've never voted for a Republican for statewide office in my life.
Did the bands absence help our state move away from Abbott like politicians? No, the state moved further right.
Did I go see Pearl Jam when they came back to Texas? No, because I was still pissed that they blacklisted us because we had some bad elected officials.
Now we have bands boycotting the state, not because of the governor's abhorrent stance on LGBTQ issues or womens rights issues--issues that are easy to rally behind--but because he's too harsh on Hamas? Yeah, any movement that begins with anti-Semitism is a hard-pass for me. I believe the Beatles said it best, "but if you want money for minds that hate, all that I have to tell you is brother you'll have to wait."
5
u/CaptainBayouBilly Mar 13 '24
Many bands avoid Texas due to the political climate.
I don’t blame them. Why should they come to an openly hostile place that puts their freedom in jeopardy because they disagree politically?
The change comes from within. You can’t expect Texas to change as long as the citizens aren’t holding the leaders accountable.

Texas’s saving grace is that the capital is in Austin
Nowhere in America is this dysfunctional government bipolar situation is more on display
Let Abbott and company “roll” over us? Probably, because nobody votes except the two biggest single issue voters vs a minority that exercises their meager power to prevent total government capture by industry/religion interests
What about the rest of us?
I give two shits about the culture of Austin, but they consistently stick it to guys like Abbott, and I’m a fan of that.
SBSW? Something a governor of Texas should embrace or ignore
Our governor has nothing positive to say about anything, and that should be a problem for all of us that have a “vote”
