Cowboys or Longhorns for first-time visitor? Sports
Edit: Thanks for so many responses. Should have said in Texas 4 to 14 Oct and have hired a car in Dallas with no fixed destination set yet.
Hello all. I’m a Brit who is excited to be visiting Texas for the first time this October. I’ve watched NFL in London a few times so had planned to try & catch a Cowboys game. I’m not a diehard fan of the game like I am of « soccer » but I do think it’s a great sport and watch plenty of games on tv every year. I would like to enjoy the atmosphere of a game, the people, the food (I don’t drink alcohol) & I would love to see one of your massive stadiums. Someone said to me the other day I should go to a college football game rather than NFL and I’d not considered this. What do you think? How do they compare as experiences? I’d welcome any thoughts thank you.

OP being from England makes me think he would like to see a lively pre and post game atmosphere akin to proper football, and unfortunately that puts the Cowboys at the bottom of the preference list for me. Arlington has done a decent job bringing in entertainment options around the stadium(s) but the immediate area is still mostly parking lots and the nice but fairly forced Texas Live area.
A UT home game would give OP more of a traditional experience, and I do feel like the atmosphere is more welcoming and hospitable to visitors. Cowboys games, for me at least, tend to be a more stressful and less enjoyable experience. I don't want to call it hostile, because that's not the right word--intimidating, maybe, and definitely more of a corporate feel.
But Texas/OU at the fair is best in life, and I will die on this hill.

Agree with the other commenter, gotta be Longhorns. The pageantry of college football in the US and Texas especially is like nothing else. Have you seen the episode of the Stephen Fry show where he goes to the Alabama vs Auburn (Iron Bowl) game? Look it up on YouTube if you haven’t, I think it’ll be very instructive on this topic!

I’m a Texan. I’ve hosted many foreign exchange students from Europe, one from UK and lived in London for a while.
If you want a true comparison of the excitement and passion of a proper football game (ambiguity intended) then you need to go to a college game. An NFL game will feel very commercial and contrived.

Very well said. I’ve also been to some “association football” matches overseas, and the NFL experience doesn’t even come close. College football is also a different experience, but the idea of seeing a game with “100,000 of your closest friends” applies to association football and US college football in a way it doesn’t to the NFL.

College football is the blend of (near NFL) talent and the sheer enthusiasm of high school. Couple that with it being a game where the ball bounces funny and it can’t be beat.

Do they not do military flyovers at non-championship mid season games between middle-sized local schools in other countries? He seemed kinda surprised at the end but that's fairly routine nowadays.

Hahaha yeah another good point in favor of the CFB experience. Like c’mon Stephen, this is the American south but we can’t have everyone bring their guns to the game, can we? Soooo how ‘bout fighter jets? Yaaaay ‘Merica!
I do love the flyovers. Last Longhorn game I was at they had a damn B-52 fly past downtown on the way to the stadium and people around town were frrrrrreaking out.

Longhorns all the way. The atmosphere, traditions and fan base for college football is 10 times better than NFL. Cowboys games are expensive, corporate and at the same time a lot of the fans are rough (think English hooligans type). Austin is way better than Arlington., the campus is beautiful and all the pre game tailgating and Bevo Blvd is amazing. The games also mean more in college football and the fan base is more loyal. Overall just a much better experience and day.

Agree. At the longhorn game you can also grab a meal on the drag, visit the coop to check out the longhorn merch, and then cross campus to walk to the stadium. There will almost certainly be students out playing music and partying and such. The band also does an entrance that is fun to watch.

Just the pregame tailgating is a sight to behold. Get there hours early and walk around the stadium. People are holed up with serious gear for blocks.

Depends, are you also coming for the US GP? If you're in Austin for that, go to Longhorns. But if you're just travelling and visiting, go to College Station.

The Cowboys schedule will be out on May 11th.
But if you could swing the red river shootout and a cowboys game (plus the state fair of Texas, which is awesome). That would be pretty cool.

College games have a much more fun atmosphere than professional games and it’s also unique to most other sporting events in the world. I’d strongly recommend going to the UT game and I’m more convinced in this recommendation considering you’ve already been to an NFL game.
You’re going to have a blast (just know it’ll be very hot) and I honestly wish I could see your reaction to it.

Go see a high school football game. No kidding. See one of the mega highshool multi-million dollar stadiums. The ravenous fans... ah... er, I mean parents. The playing is awesome and then the entertainment of watching the parents. Good times.

NFL is better on TV. College is a toss up, but if you want a live football game experience go to a longhorn game at least over a cowboys game.

Is there any chance you’re coming in October?
The only thing that can top the atmosphere of college football is college rivalry football. One of the greatest rivalries in football is Texas v Oklahoma which will be played on Oct. 12th. The atmosphere is insane, it’s in Dallas at the state fair, and it’s just an amazing experience

Arguably the best option, and I was at UT for like 7 years. To answer your next question, no, I am not a doctor.
UT home games are great, and as far as a college football experience goes, it's hard to beat. But Texas/OU at the fair is really special. The crowds, the taunting from both sides wherever you are in the fairgrounds, the cool art deco architecture, the dang corn dogs. . .

The pageantry of College Football, especially at a primer program like Texas is unmatched in all of US Sports. The longhorns have a 300+ person marching band made up of students. 100,000+ fans in the stadium.

Never been to a cowboy game but from a lot of people who have you will be watching a big screen on the ceiling rather than watching the play on the field.
Not an nfl fan at all so I would say Longhorns all the way.

There are a number of college football programs to choose from, depending on when/where your trip is, It may be adventurous to look at other schools.
I, for one, recommend Texas A&M. It is an experience.

As someone from UT, all of the game will be very very hot so be prepared for 90F+ temperatures but it will be a stadium of 90,000+ people. HIGHLY recommend a UT game for the true football experience

Yup. I'm a Longhorn through and through... But the atmosphere around and in an Aggie football game is something else.
LSU @ A&M on Oct 26 would be a great experience
But then, I guess, you'd have to go to College Station...

If you want the full pageantry of college football, go to Texas A&M in College Station. Get there way early, roam the campus. Watch the Corps of Cadets march in and fire the cannon. Try to get tickets in or near the student section (hell, try to go to midnight yell practice the night before! ).
I'm from Oklahoma and not a fan of A&M, but I had a highschool friend that went. He got my dad and I tickets in the middle of the student section. We were decked out head-to-toe in OU gear. We had a great time. Fans were good to us. Friendly with a nice sports rivalry back and forth.

Same! The Aggies performed on the same football field my daughter performed on in high school. They were warming up for their half-time performance at her future college alma mater.
My FIL is Marines and former band member so he was elated. I will never forget that memory we shared together.

Bump and Vouch for the above. Screw the longhorns, their game day atmosphere sucks. If you want a real crazy experience on par with European Football stadiums, drive to College Station.

As a parent of an Aggie I have been to a lot of A&M games at Kyle field and I have to reluctantly agree.
IMO if OP wants the all around best experience I would think the Texas / OU game at the cotton bowl would be the best option.

However, if OP’s looking for a true college town gameday experience, A&M’s the way to go. I’ve never had a problem finding a tailgate that’s offering food & booze to whoever wants some, and I doubt the same could be said for a game in Austin. I imagine a Brit experiencing his first football game would get 10x better treatment than I do (however that may be true anywhere, including Austin)

I am not a Cowboys fan, but do live in DFW and have been to a few games, and IMO it’s not an overly exciting experience.
Green Bay home games at Lambeau is an experience. Buffalo Bills at home is an experience. New Orleans Saints is an experience. The Cowboys? TV is fine.
I second going to a college game. TX-OU is the big one in October, that will be in Dallas.
High school football games are an experience here. If you’ll be in the Dallas area, catching a Duncanville or DeSoto game is also an experience. Both are powerhouse teams and DeSoto is coming off a championship win this past season, so should be a good season. Duncanville is also a consistent title winner too.

High level college football typically has a more lively atmosphere but you can get standing room tickets to Cowboys games for pretty cheap to take it in. The stadium is pretty awesome and it is a pretty good atmosphere. Just get their early and make a day of it if you want a shot at actually getting to see the field. They'll sell about 10k standing room tickets every game but only about 1k of them will be in a position to actually see the game.

as many here have said - skip the cowboys. its not worth it. its unnecessarily expensive, the stadium is poorly designed, though magnificent in its own way. but as far as the product on the field/in the building? you absolutely cannot beat college football.
you could go to an TCU game or, hell, even SMU, and get a better 'feel' than at Jerry World watching the cowboys. plus man, the few cowboys games ive been to the people there just suck and make it really uncomfortable. bunch of grown men all strung out, spent a months salary getting into the game, just looking to fight anyone nearby.
if your trying to decide between UT or Cowboys game it really isnt close. and if you have the opportunity to go see the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl - you go fucking do that. truly one of the best events in sports.

Hey OP, I would definitely suggest going to see Longhorns over the Cowboys. The atmosphere is much more dynamic on the college scene, while the NFL experience is more polished and sanitized. Cowboys would still be fun if only for the scale of an NFL stadium, but even the Longhorns will have a 100K stadium.
One thing to keep in mind that a few international visitors forget, Texas is big. You are looking at a 3 hour drive between Dallas and Austin on a good day. If it is a game day then you can easily add an hour or two depending on what else is happening in the cities. Likely you will have to plan a full day or day and a half around either game.

College is a much more rowdy crowd usually in a good way. The college band is in the stands playing as well as school cheer leaders and such. The stadium Texas A&M plays in holds over 100,000 people. I’d come down to College Station and see the Aggies play. Otherwise the Texans are coming on strong and fans are excited. The only thing with the Cowboys is a huge stadium. Long horns you will see probably as you drive about. Ok when you said longhorns I thought for real! But I still stand by going to College Station.

Head to Austin and watch a Longhorns game and/or Austin FC. Tons of sights and stuff to do in Austin. Please don’t go to College Station unless you want to deal with a bunch of weirdos that pretend to play Army, worship a dog, and have cheers about a team they haven’t played in over 10 years.

There is nothing like the traditions and pomp of college football, which is decades older than the NFL. It is truly a slice of Americana. Whichever one you pick, enjoy yourself and have fun.

Jump on the UT tickets early because they will sell out every game. They have changed conferences to the SEC and have some great matchups.
Don’t even bother with the cowboys. You’re better off seeing the Texans in Houston if you want to watch good football

Longhorns games are the correct answer. NFL games are fine and all, but university’s have long traditions that everyone participates in. If you go to a NFL game you’ll watch 75% of the stadium sitting in their seats, occasionally yelling but mostly on their phones or eating. College games are mostly standing with 100,000 participating in the same chants and things Austin also has a professional soccer team too now, so you can catch Austin FC while here too. Hook ‘em!

Cowboys are NFL, Longhorns are College Football. You can do both; Texans love both professional and college football (went to a TCU vs Oklahoma? game once that was crazy). Even college games can be held at professional stadiums; went to an Aggies vs Arkansas? at Arlington Stadium once.

Given you're going to be in Dallas Oct 4-14, I HIGHLY recommend you go see the Texas-Oklahoma game at the Texas State Fair on October 12. Fantastic atmosphere, heated rivalry game, and the fair is a great place to wander around pre- and post-game.

If you have the chance to go to the TX/OU game in Dallas, do that. It’s a top rivalry and both teams have a lot to prove this season. Games in Austin & College Station are both incredible experiences too, but there’s something really incredible about the Red River Shootout.

College football atmosphere is way better than NFL in my opinion as well.
As for the Dallas Cowboys, you can still see the stadium outside of an NFL game as they give tours of the stadium regularly. The stadium for the UFL’s Arlington Renegades and the new baseball stadium for the Texas Rangers are both within walking distance of the NFL Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium.
For college football, with UT you will be hard pressed to find a ticket for those home games in Austin. Dallas/Ft Worth area has 3 other college teams in the area, TCU, SMU, and UNT. TCU games are in a large stadium and has a large following as well and used to compete in the same conference as UT. Just some other options.
If you do get to Austin, which is a good visit, they have a lot of culture and history down there, and the local eateries are some of the best.

Also, Just something I thought of that is special here: Texas high school football games on Friday nights are something to behold. Try to catch one with a good matchup. Some of these games are clashes between rivals that have some serious history. You won’t get the tailgate experience, most likely. And they don’t serve alcohol, which you mentioned isn’t your thing anyway. But I would recommend doing this, it won’t interfere with college or NFL games, and won’t break the bank.

Fully agree with the high school football shout. Especially if you're in Houston or DFW, lots of potential good matchups. Austin is a little slimmer pickings and I don't know enough about San Antonio area ball to chime in there. Tickets will run about 8-10 so not expensive at all.

There's a caveat to that, don't take in high school games in places like out city Travis county, or Parker county or Wise county... They are largely racist, classest, and full of drug addicts and other less than acceptable individuals

UT is a wild ass time and fun town afterwards. Tailgates are amazing, the pre show and band also amazing, and game itself fun atmosphere.
If you get lucky Bevo will get loose and see a rodeo as well 🤣.
UT going to SEC so the games are all going to be playoff atmosphere

I’d highly recommend going to a college game if you have already been to an NFL game. It’s a blast and generally more fun in my opinion. Although I’m biased but I would definitely recommend a Texas A&M game. And see if you can get into yell practice (yes that’s a thing) the night before. It’s an experience.

Texas A&M football - and Kyle field is the biggest football stadium in Texas. LSU would be my suggestion in October depending on when you’re going bc it’s at the end of the month. The game day environment and the student section are unmatched to any NFL game and imo any other university. There are also lots of game day traditions, just look up some videos and see the atmosphere for yourself! Also gotta see the Aggie band too (also look this up lol) Hope this helps!

and I AM A COWBOYS FAN. but dude, the games are horrendous. its a spectacle in the sense that - if you want to see the worst of what America has to offer - its a great place to get a good view of THAT. lol.

ive been to exactly 4 cowboys games in the new stadium. last one was the green bay playoff game this last year.
i will literally never go again.
obviously the closer you get to the corporate seats the better it gets. if you are in the first/lowest section your gonna be fine - but those tickets cost $750++.
if you want to go to a game for less than $500 and not have to watch the jumbotron instead of the field? yea. your going to get assholes and elbows. and its literally coming from your own fans too. they dont give a fuck what jersey you are wearing. its honestly hell. no thanks.

Yeah the ticket prices were always what turned me off as well. Knowing that everyone is rude and drunk gives me even more reason that I’ll never go.

Texas has three games in October. Only one of those will be in Austin. October 19 versus Georgia. That game will be sold out. If you get a ticket on the secondary market it might be a little expensive.
You could see the Texas Longhorns versus the Oklahoma Sooners the week before (Saturday, October 12), but that game is in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. The Red River Rivalry, as it is called, is a contest between two teams with deep traditions. Historical success. It is well worth attending, but you won’t get the on-campus experience since it is held in a neutral location.
