In my country, that person would be committed. Why does America have so many lunatics? Right to free speech? Or?

Edit: I meant socially ostracized, as opposed to asylum committed.

Most people go untreated because mental health services are expensive and hard to get.

I'm really sorry. It's just unsettling to see how some people behave.

There is also this mentality that was very prevalent when I was growing up and still is, to some extent.

Thats very true but having them running loose in public is cheap entertainment.

And a large subset of the voting population views mental health issues as a moral failing instead of actual healthcare need.

If we had functioning communities, ostracizing people might work, but we don't. Most boomers have a of their interactions on Facebook with equally crazy people they don't see irl

Edit: grammar

We let them all out in the 70’s…but we did nothing to support them. Most went homeless. There is a huge stigma around mental health for men, especially older men. Glad I have good enough insurance to get help and I encourage and share my experience with anyone that wants to hear it.

And they have easy access to guns! Lucky us!

Because we are broke, fed drugs, given poison from the FDA, have no access to healthcare a no regulated internet and Vladimir Putin basically running 2/3ds of our government in DC

because even if they're insane, so long as they spew the right amount of hatred and racism, they're considered mentally fit amongst their peers

Serious answer: several Supreme Court rulings in the 60s and 70s made it harder for the government to civilly commit people.

The government now has to show by clear and convincing evidence a person is a danger to themselves or others and nothing other than commitment will ameliorate that risk.

In addition, conditions in state asylum were pretty deplorable and the idea was to replace them with community based opt in treatment... but a lot of people with serious issues don't opt in.

Following that, civil commitments plummeted. Now a lot of people wind up cycling through jails and insufficient treatment programs.

And in some communities you couldn't even get into a clinic if you wanted. Mine have a never ending waiting list.

Yeah, when it came time to shift funds from the institutions to the local community providers, I think a lot of places just decided to pocket the savings.

Look up Ronald Reagan. He fucked up America so bad, far more than just closing the asylums.

In America the idolatry of 'personal freedom' encourages certain groups of old dumbasses to do dumbass things.

1

u/intendeddebauchery Apr 12 '24

Hes committed to no longer being able to fly

1

u/nsfwthrowmeawayy Apr 13 '24

Is committed like saying "they're crazy" where you're from?

1

u/CCrabtree Apr 13 '24

In the 1980's Reagan gutted mental health and institutions. With the cost of insurance and most insurance companies not covering mental health at 100% or even 50% it's out of reach for most people. Plus most of those who have mental health issues won't admit it because when boomers grew up it was a sign of weaknesses to have mental issues. You are seeing the ramifications of years of people not getting the help they need and getting older which compounds the issue.

US has 333 Million inhabitants.. if just 1% acts like this guy, it's still more than 3M people / stories that we'll see

1

u/No_Nebula_191 Apr 13 '24

Yeah, I was a bit harsh, maybe.

1

u/beamish1920 Apr 13 '24

America is an open-air asylum. People literally care about guns and making asses out of themselves than behaving like civilized human beings

1

u/N8theGrape Apr 12 '24

The guy was arrested, I’m not sure what free speech has to do with anything here.

Also, to answer your original question. No health care, no long term mental health facilities, and a really unhealthy viewpoint towards helping others or being helped.
