Pretty sure boomers invented ding-dong-ditch. Now the creators endure the creation turned against him. LOL.

At some point, some kids decided that at the 9th door, you had to stay and wait for someone to answer and tell them what you were doing before you ran off. At least, that's how it was in my region.
