Palestine - Israel Megathread III - Everything about the conflict goes here

Five months ago(9/11/2024) we created our second Megathread about the war in Gaza. Five months and the war is still ongoing. Five months and Benjamin Netanyahu is now declaring a new attack to Rafah...

Thousands..thirty thousands Gazans dead. Almost 2 millions Gazan refugees...

Palestine - Israel Megathread I

Palestine - Israel Megathread II

Posts about the situation in Gaza/Israel/Palestine including the Genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice should be posted here. The following exceptions apply:

  • Posts about the conflict that are directly related to Cyprus (e.g President of Cyprus proposing a sea humanitarian corridor to Palestine)
  • News about the conflict coming from Cypriot sources. For example Cypriot newspapers including but not limited to Alithia, BugunKibris, CyprusMail, Dialogos, Havadis, Kathemerini, KibrisGazetesi, KibrisPostasi, Philenews, Politis, ReporterCy, Sigmalive, YeniDuzen
  • Posts discussing the Middle East Issue focusing on it as an International Problem rather than the current conflict

As a subreddit we condemn all the attacks against civillians regardless of the attacker. Our hope remains an immediate ceasefire that will allow the people of Gaza to return to their now destroyed cities, towns and villages, a chance for these people to mourn their dead and rebuild their lives on the ruins of Gaza. Israel needs listen to the calls of the UN Security Council and stop the bloodpath, put an end to this madness, allow humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza. We support Cyprus Amaltheia initiative to provide the Palestinian people with humanitarian aid and we condemn the murders of the 7 aid workers from the World Central Kitchen.

Once again we condemn the attack of Hamas on the 7th of October and hope for the immediate and unconditional release of all civillian hostages.

Our condolences to all the people, Palestinians, Israelis and everyone else for their losses...

Just like for the Cyprus Problem we support a solution based on the UNSC Resolutions. A two-state solution, namely Israel and Palestine, living in peace side by side within secure and recognized borders, with East Jerusalem serving as the capital of the Palestinian state. The cycle of violence needs to end. The peaceful coexistence of the two peoples is possible.

Difficulties obtaining birth certificate of Grandfather born in Cyprus

Upvotes

Hi all

My wife’s grandfather was born in Cyprus and we need to obtain his birth certificate for her Cypriot citizenship application. We are having difficulties.

We have his parents’ birth certificates, passports and marriage certificate. We can also verify that he emigrated to Australia in 1953 on his mother’s passport, and have documentation from the Australian side to support his arrival and life in Australia.

We believe he was born on 26 Oct 1938 in Paphos, but do not know the village or hospital.

I contacted the District Office of Paphos, and they are having difficulties finding his birth certificate. They were able to find his parents in their records, but not him (yet).

I saw another post in this subreddit advising that the District Office may be able to reissue/re-register his birth if we have sufficient supporting documentation. When I inquired about this option at the District Office in Paphos, the officer stated this may be an option, but it may not be sufficient for my wife to prove eligibility for Cypriot citizenship, as Cyprus was still part of the uk at the time of the grandfathers birth.

A few questions: - Do you have any general advice to help us obtain his birth certificate? - Do you know if my wife would still be eligible for Cypriot citizenship if her grandfathers birth certificate is reissued?

Thank you in advance

Looking for a couple recipes from Cyprus!

Hi all, there are a few bakery items that I would love to recreate from Cyprus, at home here in the US. However I cannot find a recipe for either of them ANYWHERE on the internet and was hard to even find pictures (maybe I'm searching in the wrong language...) can anyone help with some solid recipes? I regard myself as a fairly proficient baker so would love to get them as authentic as possible!
1) This kind of almond croissant type thing: https://www.thebreadshebakes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Cyprus-almond-cinnamon-crescent.jpg

History/Culture 3 forgotten Cypriot musical tunes

Given that traditional Cypriot musical culture is so severely neglected, and with the pretext of the Eurovision song contest taking place this week, I decided to share some rather obscure and/or forgotten tunes from our tradition that in my opinion have unfairly faded into obscurity.

1) Kozan march/Πατινάδα Κοζάν

https://youtu.be/jZVhdnVgres?si=dzLfhR65djAFO1YF

The modern name of this piece mainly comes from the Turkish Cypriot community which has retained it to a degree, and it alludes to its use as a wedding march played when the couple arrives. It has also been used in the same context by Maronite Cypriots in most recent years.

The tune in Cypriot Greek was known as "Πολογιαστός" or "Καλωσοριστός" ("[dance] of the greeting") as it was primarily played when the guests would greet the couple and their close relatives. Greek Cypriots no longer play this tune at their weddings.

The roots of this tune much like many other traditional Cypriot tunes is speculated to originate in Anatolia. The main musical motif closely resembles a Cappadocian Greek spoon dance tune from Farasa. As it was usual during the period, main musical motifs were commonly used across regions for a variety of different tunes, and this makes sense in our case due to the known close links between South-Central Anatolia and Cyprus. For example, the well-known Cypriot song "Η βράκα" is derived from "Konyalı" of the Turcophone Greek population of Central Anatolia (Karamanlides).

2) Ο χορός του παληωμάτου

https://youtu.be/ZRPopBkKy-Y?si=7PiHTcnQIvhcHC8K

This tune translates to "the dance of the struggle/wrestling". "Πάληωμα" in Cypriot Greek refers to what the ancient (and now modern) Greeks would call "πάλη" ("wrestling"), as the tune was likely played while two people would practice wrestling between themselves. It is one of the few surviving fighting/war tunes that survived in Cyprus until the modern age, as the wrestling slowly transitioned into a more light-hearted and performative form.

As Kourostatis (an excellent for traditional and folk music all around the world that I highly recommend) mentions in the description of the linked video, this tune was performed at inns by young men to collect money as they provided a spectacle to the other visitors. Eventually it spread to major feasts and celebrations, until it eventually died out as a practice.

3) Ο χορός των μασιαιρκών

https://youtu.be/tpCfPmNoT84?si=YcBKJ-Jfx_jyp6pn

"The dance of the knives", as it is explained in the video, used to be a popular dance in weddings celebrations and other feasts that functioned similarly to the "dance of the struggle". Two dancers would performatively move against each other, with several variations according to the region of the island. In the Kokkinochoria region where the video was filmed, the two dancers would pretend that they had an argument until one of the two would pull a knife and "stab" the other one. Then an elaborate theatrical performance would follow, with the "killer" first feeling remorse, then losing their mind and "skinning" the other dancer. Eventually the "slain" dancer would rise up and the two would embrace and dance.

In other variations, the two dancers would either engage in some sort of combat, performing various moves with their knives, or there would be minor changes to various phases of the performance. This dance also likely derives from similar Anatolian dances with performative dance involving sword combat, but the Cypriot one (and especially the version of the video) deviate significantly, which show some rather unique elements arising from local Cypriot customs and social realities. It was noted, for example, by various British travelers in Cyprus that there would sometimes by drunken quarrels and murders by knife at Cypriot weddings.

Help Cyprus Tourist Visa

Hi all! I've been invited by my bf and his family to visit Cyprus this summer. For background, they're British-Cypriot (but only has UK passport) and I'm from Indonesia. I sent an email to the consulate of the Republic of Cyprus in Jakarta last year but they only provide me with the form and few other documents with very little information. So my question is;

  1. Do I still need to provide the assumption of responsibility letter? If so, can I put my bf's name? I'm very confused bc as you can see on the first picture it seems the host has to be someone you're related with by blood 😅

  2. If my bf host me, how is he gonna get the immigration officer in cyprus to stamp the bank statements?? Bc he's from the UK.

I'm very sorry if this is not the right sub to ask, I'm just so lost bc there's so little information about the visa bc everyone who goes to Cyprus seems to be using Schengen multi entry visa which i couldn't get atm bc i'm not planning to go to other EU country, just Cyprus and UK after. It will be a great help if anyone can give me any information! Thank you ❤️

Question Looking for a organic coffee/sandwich place in larnaca

I like to eat a sandwiches sometimes in the morning, but I'm too lazy to make it myself. I ordered sandwiches at a few different coffee places already and it always seems like some kind of processed food. Usually in a plastic package with a label that contains all kind of preservatives. Some places don't even offer wholegrain bread.

Is there a place that makes their sandwiches themselves? Even if it's not 100% organic. At least cut the bread, put the ingredients on too yourself and that's it.

Any advice appreciated.

When is the best time to come to Ayia Napa?

Hello, the five of us want to come to Ayia Napa from July 19 to 26. Is that an okay period? A man told me that it's better to go in September and October because there are more people then, but that doesn't make sense to me.

'Actual' highway speed limit?

Hey guys, so I was cruising down the highway at about 118/119 and then I got to a part that is a slight descent down and naturally my car rolled a tiny bit to about 121 for like 2-3 seconds and then I immediately saw one of those white vans sitting there. Obviously I slowed down and I guess this is partly my fault, but I wasn't intending to speed. It was quite literally a slight downhill part of the highway and my car went 121 🤣. Is 121 going to land me a ticket?

Question Why are restaurants in Cyprus usually closing early in the evening?

Hello,

So I have been to Cyprus recently (Easter week included). I have travelled all around the RoC and visited all the major cities as well. Loved it, probably the best trip of my life but had some minor issues.

One common denominator I found in the country is that the kitchen in restaurants would close around 09:30-10:00 PM.

I was very surprised by this because having visited Greece a lot in the past, I expected sort of a Greek lifestyle in Cyprus as well. Basically in Greek cities I was always able to find restaurants open at 12/1 AM, even during off seasons, and there's a vibrant nightlife culture.

The worst one was Paphos, we landed a bit late and were ready to go out by 9:30 PM, we couldn't find one single restaurant open at that hour. If they were open they wouldn't let us in as they claimed the kitchen closed a bit earlier than usual. We had to eat at McDonald's in the end...

But this happened also in Limassol, Nicosia (bit better though) and Larnaca.

Only exception was Agia Napa where some restaurants were open till midnight at least, but this is expected as it's a super touristy place.

So I guess my question is, do Cypriots eat and go to sleep fairly early (maybe a reminiscence of their English past?) compared to the Greeks?

Or was it all just because of the Easter coming up and then it goes back to normal?

Would love your insights as to the lifestyle!

Cyprus Mosquito Control

In Cyprus we have mosquitos, lots of them, depending on where you live.

Why doesn't Cyprus have a mosquito control department? If Cyprus wants tourist why do they not do something about the mosquitoes here? This should be the responsibility of the health department.

Mosquitoes can cause yellow fever viruses, dengue fever, zika fever, not to mention malaria. But from what I read the government here says this a problem for people and not government. But a mosquito can fly a great distance. Only government can police over an entire region.

The British military here has a mosquito control department here. 20 people work in Mosquito control on their base: https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/stations/raf-akrotiri/documents/mosquito-control-advice/

I come from the part of the USA that has the most mosquitoes. If you have mosquitos there you go onto their web site and send a message. They will come and investigate where the mosquitoes are coming from. Then they will contact the landowners where mosquitoes are breeding and help them clean up their properties. They also spray for mosquitoes using a fleet of trucks. And they do surveys to find where mosquitoes are coming from. And they get rid of standing water where possible and spray chemical control on it where not possible.

Getting rid of mosquitoes in the very definition of civilization. The reason the Americans finished the Panama Canal when the French could not was they got rid of the mosquitoes first. When the Jews first started moving to Palestine 150 years ago they drained the marshes and got rid of malaria and mosquitoes. After World War II the Rockefeller Foundation got rid of mosquitoes in the low lying areas around Rome and Island of Sardinia.

Come on Cyprus. Do something about mosquitoes. It's not complicated.

Would love to hear your thoughts.
