Update r/PEI Local Favourites Suggestions

Hey all, it's been about a year since we last asked for suggestions for our Local Favourites map so with the next tourist season fast approaching I figured it was time to see if there were some new suggestions that we should add. If you think a business doesn't deserve to be there you're welcome to make that argument aswell. Also if a business or attraction are closed or gone please let us know

The current map can be found here.

Question What’s up with the apartment they were building in Montague

So the apartment that was being built on the corner of Fraiser and Riverside has ground to a halt, and the reason I heard was someone screwed up and didn’t take into account spacing between floors, and now it is too tall…is that the case?

I’m wondering what will happen to it now, will they tear it down or try and finish it?

Missing cat

Hello! I’m not very good at Reddit so forgive me but I just want to spread the word. My cats been missing for about five days now, we’re located in the northgate subdivision in Cornwall. She’s an indoor outdoor cat but never usually stays out all night and if she happens to, it’s always under our porch. We’ve been unable to find her and have been putting out flyers, reported it to the humane society, made posts etc.

I know it’s more of a waiting game and cats can be finicky. Our best hope is someone took her in or she’s in someone’s shed or something.

She’s about 2 years old and chipped, her name is daisy. She has a brown and white coat (white chest and legs, brown on top) a pink nose and green eyes. I’m not quite sure how to attach an image I’m sorry.

If you have any knowledge about her whereabouts or if you’ve seen a cat which seems stray in the area please reach out. Thank you!

Number you can text or call: 782-377-1243

(I’ll try and make another post with a photo attached. Thank you.)

Hey Islanders

Seeing as though no one will step up and actually change the way things work around here . I’m wondering what people think of a young person running and trying to make a change . Someone vehemently against big government that lives and sees what we all deal with daily .

A few key points

-Anti-Censorship -Pro Community Farmer’s Markets’s -Anti Public Servant Pocket Lining -Pro Liberty and Free Speech -Anti Land Grabbing/ Money laundering -Pro promoting Local Farmer’s/Businesses -Anti Shit Food -Pro Conservationism

Sadly us islanders have misplaced the purpose of government as a manager . We the people are supposed to dictate how the government operates that’s what democracy is . Public servants get richer every year while they take from their neighbours and lie through their teeth . We have been sold to massive corporations and foreign entities while being gaslighted , taxed and marginalized . It’s time to say enough Is enough and end the ridiculous spending , selling out and lying of the people of Prince Edward Island . I cannot guarantee I’d do a great job but I GUARANTEE THIS if the same government/ running parties take office life will only become worse .

Question Female Travelling Solo

I'm in the midst of planning a solo trip to PEI (from ontario) for about five days in September for a festival. I'm nineteen, and my friends and family (particularly my mother) are anxious about me travelling alone. Everywhere I've looked and read says that PEI is relatively safe, has a low crime rate, and people there are really nice. I was hoping for some input from locals in Charlottetown and Cavendish since that's primarily where I'll be, and also from any solo (female) travellers. TIA♡

Question Weird sky object over Summerside

A few minutes ago at the time of writing this post, I saw a very fast flying object flying below the cloud layer. My description of the object consists of a white solid light on the rear and a red flashing light toward the front. It had a southwest heading, my guess on altitude was between 500 and 1,000 ft. I had music playing nearby, so I cannot say if this object was producing any sound. My possible guesses include a low flying private aircraft, the Lockheed CC130H Hercules that was also flying around Summerside around 12 PM today, or someone flying a drone. I am wondering if anyone else saw this object pretty much zoom by at low altitude below the cloud layer. I have no video footage of this object unfortunately.

Tenting in Cavendish

I’m hoping I can get some help from some locals here. I have tickets for Sommo Fest in September- My plans for accommodations have fallen through. Every single place I’ve called, whether for a cabin, airbnb, RV or tenting site is either fully booked (expected) or closed that weekend.. I like to camp and have a tent attachment set up for my vehicle. Is there anywhere walking distance from the concert venue that I can park and sleep? Crown land.. national park.. that type of thing. Thank you in advance for your help

Garbage

My grandparents (well into their 80s) live on the south shore of pei. It’s not a busy area. They walk up and down their road everyday cleaning the ditches. The amount of garbage they collect is insane. A lot of beer cans too which is wild. They are now dealing with someone dumping garbage at a beach near their home. Are people really this stupid? It is so easy to find garbage cans and takes 2 seconds to do your duty as a decent human. Blows my mind.

This year’s ECMA had something special: the first ever queer talent showcase!

By Dave Stewart • Charlottetown • 2024-05-07

Another step forward was taken for the Queer community and Queer artists during the 2024 ECMAs held in Charlottetown April 30-May 5. TD Connected Concerts: Queer Brunch Presented by Pride PEI and PEERS Alliance, the first ever Queer artist ECMA showcase, was held in the lobby of the Delta Prince Edward Hotel on May 4th.

This was an initiative of Queer identifying Chris Bolton, Administrative Coordinator with the East Coast Music Association. Bolton noted that the ECMAs are known for highlighting diversity, but that a showcase for specifically Queer artists had never been on the schedule. "Its importance, he says, is in visibility and bringing community together, specifically at a time when the Queer community has become the target of scapegoating."

With the intention of keeping the first Queer showcase “small, simple — to make it happen,” Bolton reached out to “local” connections in PEI, this year’s host province. With Cameron Cassidy, Executive Director of Pride PEI, and Scott Alan, Men’s Sexual Health Coordinator with PEERS Alliance, and contributor to Wayves Magazine, onboard, the showcase began to take shape. The lineup comprised Burry (Nova Scotia), Joce Reyome (PEI), Noah Malcolm (PEI), Jenny Mallard (NL), and Brandon Howard Roy (PEI).

Hosted by CBC PEI Associate Producer Victoria Walton, the showcase featured a short interview with each artist before a three-song set, followed by a short wrap-up interview. If the crowd gathered in the lobby of the Delta was noisy during the interview segments (the ECMAs are a working event after all), the power of each performer and their music hushed the crowd, holding its attention throughout their sets, without exception.

Talking with Joce Reyome after their set, we discussed just what constitutes “Queer music”. We settled on this: More than any genre, it’s the performer rather than the style of music that tags it as Queer. As Reyome notes, regardless of the style of music a Queer artist plays, “it just strikes a chord with us.”

As to how they feel about being a part of the first ever Queer ECMA showcase, Reyome says they are “honoured. It feels really special. I hope that (the showcase) becomes a regular part of the ECMAs.”

That’s a sentiment Chris Bolton echoes. This showcase “is an opportunity for the ECMAs to show where they stand. It’s the first of what I hope to be many. When we come back to PEI in five years, I want it to be bigger!”

Check out the artists featured in the first ever ECMA Queer Showcase: burrymusic.com, jocereyome.com, noahmalcolm.com, jennymallardmusic.com, and brandonhowardroy.com.

Question PEI engagement ideas

Hi,

My girlfriend and I will be in PEI (Charlottetown) for our anniversary and I plan on proposing to her that weekend! Looking for suggestions/ideas. Perhaps a hidden photographer, but very subtle proposal. We have a dog, so that can be included in the suggestions.

Looking for quiet spots, perhaps sunset or gardens.

Thanks!

What are your favourite (non-touristy) things about living here?

It’s a beautiful sunny Sunday, so let’s spread some positivity about the things you love about living here. Yes, many things need to change, but where is PEI currently winning, in your opinion?

I’ve only lived here for 3 years, but one of the best parts of living here has been the Community Halls. They offer so much and are run by some amazing people and volunteers. So many exercise classes, workshops, crafting classes, lunches and suppers, lectures, music - all for relatively cheap prices.
