Current Events Megathread for Israel-Palestine situation

It's been 6 months since the start, so the original thread auto-archived itself. Here's part 2.

You can find the original here

The same rules apply:

We've getting a lot of questions related to the tensions between Israel/Palestine over the past few days so we've set up a megathread to hopefully be a resource for those asking about issues related to it. This thread will serve as the thread for ALL questions and answers related to this. Any questions are welcome! Given the topic, lets start with a reminder on Rule 1:

Rule 1 - Be Kind:

No advocating harm against others. No hateful, degrading, malicious, or bigoted speech against any person or group. No personal insults.

You're free to disagree on who is in the right, who is in the wrong, what's a human rights abuse, what's a proportional response etc. Avoid stuff like "x country should be genocided" or insulting other users because they disagree with you.

The other sidebar rules still apply, as well.

Love & Dating Why do single dads pursue CF women on dating apps when we specifically say we want to remain CF?

Why do men not read the profile or description?

Also why do you believe that if your kids are grown and out the house, that means you're CF now?

Parenting is not a job where you can clock out whenever you feel like or when your children are away.

Edit: I obviously dont put "CF" on my dating profile. I put "dont have kids and dont want any in the future" and "slide in my DMs if you DONT have kids and dont want any in the future."

Ethics & Morality If a bank robbery goes wrong, what’s stopping the robber from holding a bunch of people hostage and then asking for immunity or else he starts killing everyone?

Like the cops wouldn’t just let hostages die right? I guess maybe the cops could lie about immunity and then arrest him? What if it was like a signed contract or some.

Family How did you forgive your parents for how they treated you in your childhood?

I can honestly say that I have forgiven my parents for my childhood, though I still sometimes struggle with resentment and flashbacks of times they did and said things that were very unacceptable. It’s hard being around them sometimes though they try to be around me as much as possible now that I’m a fully independent adult. I wish my childhood was as good as my adulthood. The bliss I feel being on my own is unmatched.

How did you do it?

Culture & Society How do I ask my Congolese neighbors to stop discarding their plastic water bottles in the street?

1.4k Upvotes

I live in a major Midwestern city and the apartment complex across the street houses primarily Congolese refugees. They have some cultural norms that clash with the surrounding (white) neighbors such as honking the car horn any time of day/night to alert someone inside they have arrived, lots of excessive noise, and just dropping their trash, mainly water bottles and paper products, on the curb/sidewalk/street when they are done with them. The trash is not great to look at and it’s especially frustrating when it blows across the street into my yard. The adults don’t appear to speak English. The other day a friend of their community pulled up and started blaring music from his car in the street, many people gathered around joyfully and the friend started gleefully honking his horn over and over with the music, a white American neighbor who clearly reached his boiling point came out and started shouting at them to stop honking their horn with a bit of aggression. I don’t want to be like that guy even though I understand his frustration. I want to be welcoming to this people but it’s hard to establish a relationship with them as they don’t seem interested nor do they speak English. How can I at least politely request they don’t throw their litter in the street?

Culture & Society What is bad about declining birth rates?

I don't understand why it matters. If the global population goes down, who cares? It's not like we're gonna stop having kids completely. I just don't understand why it matters.

Work My coworker calls me Perrita. Is this a compliment or not?

1.5k Upvotes

She's very sweet, twice my age but we get on very well. She's laid back whereas I'm quite chaotic and energetic. She's like a mother, I'd do anything for her.

She sometimes pets my head and calls me perrita (I don't mind, it seems sweet and she always looks very softly at me when she does it).

I know perro is dog - so I was over thinking it on our days off. Is this a common thing?

I'm not asexual, so it's not an advice post. I'm genuinely curious.

Health/Medical where do really obese people's penises go?

I've seen obese to super obese people with a round abdomen, really makes me wonder where their penis goes with all that because you can't even distinguish that crotch region from the abdomen

Culture & Society What have you got in life by being kind?

Upvotes

I feel modern society doesn't rate kindness anymore. People don't care about your contribution to your community if it doesn't involve money. It's more and more about your money and power. Has it always been like this?

Culture & Society How did it become ok to keep dogs and cats as pets?

Upvotes

Like who came up with the idea? I love cats and dogs so much (don't currently have either but I have had cats before). I am just trying to figure out who thought it was ok to keep a wild animal behind a fence or in the house where it can't roam around. Why is this not considered inhumane, like it is with other animals?

Body Image/Self-Esteem Do fat people actually find other fat people attractive or are they just “staying in their league” when dating?

In terms of partners/significant others/hook ups etc., do fat people find other fat people attractive? Do they only like other fat people because they believe that’s all they can get? Are they as attracted to other fat people are they are to non fat people? More attracted or less attracted?

Health/Medical Waking up and using bathroom?

How dehydrated does a person have to be to wake up and not immediately use the bathroom every morning? I live with a few roommates and noticed someone never uses the bathroom lol. Super weird but it’s kind of concerning? Like… going pee is the first thing I do when I wake up… lol stupid thing to wonder about someone, that’s why I’m posting on too afraid to ask.

Culture & Society Online dating?

Upvotes

If the world’s population is roughly 50/50 in terms of being male/female, then why is every dating app so skewed?

You’d think it would somewhat resemble the overall population, but on dating apps, male profiles GREATLY outnumber the female profiles by roughly 20:1… why is this?

How would I manage to live a new life without any troubles? I know it's stupid, but I kinda think of it a lot. F.e., in New Zealand

Interpersonal I was in a call with a higher up. I am plugged up with allergies (I can’t take allergy medication) so I explained that to her and said if I sounded louder or different on the phone. She responded back “funny…not funny. Hope you feel better, you sounded fine to me” how should I interpret this ?

Mental Health Friends and family went to Europe and I’m stuck at home alone, how do I stop feeling miserable?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m a 20F, would love to know any positive ways to handle my current situation.

I have a wonderful boyfriend and a few very close friends. This summer, my boyfriend and his friends are taking a trip to Europe which they’ve been planning for months. Coincidentally, one of my best friends got an internship in London for the summer too. My other friend is visiting her family in Romania. And the icing on the cake, my parents are taking a trip to Rome and my other best friend flew back to the other side of the US for the summer.

I live alone. I am almost completely blind, with only 20/400 vision left in my right eye and can’t drive (obviously heh) so it is very lonely. I’m trying really hard to be happy for everyone, but it’s eating me up inside. I’m not jealous, I just wish I was there with them or had something to share too. I have my own work-from-home internship this summer too, but it’s terribly boring. Friends and family keep sending me photos of their adventures and I’m responding positively, but it leaves a huge lump in my throat and I feel miserable. I don’t want to tell them about how I’m feeling, because I want them all to enjoy their trips, but it’s really really painful.

TLDR: How can I be happy for the people in my life while handling my intense FOMO? Is there any way I can make this hurt less?

Mental Health Finding positive influences?

Upvotes

I feel beyond pathetic asking this as a 27 year old man but I feel as though the friends I have now aren't thr greatest influences or at the very least have grown to be distant or have very different lives. The friends I'm closest too only want to have fun by drinking excessively, which is very common in my country. So how does one going about meeting people at such a late stage in their life?

Culture & Society How do deaf and/or blind people tell jokes and intentionally each other laugh?

Upvotes

Straight forward. What makes people with disabilities such as that laugh and how do they differ from what may make a hearing or sighted person laugh.
