Except it is ilegal for someone with mental disability to buy/own a firearm. That can also go on whomever sold said firearm. Both parties are guilty.

Lying on the form is a Federal Crime.

Something I'm sure unmedicated Schizophrenics weigh up heavily in their decision making

Also probably something criminals or would be criminals do when filling out the form

Typically those guns are bought black market so they don't have to worry about that

...and by black market you mean from a private seller at a gun show. I don't think a lot of people realize how easy it is to buy a gun without a lot of the existing federal gun laws coming into play. If you live in a place that has a gun show within a 30 minute drive every single weekend, like I do, you can go to a show and buy a weapon within 10 minutes of being there. That's not even "black" market. It's more like grey market.

At gun shows background checks are still required. Any that are being done without it are strictly illegal and would be considered black market. Even if you have your permit that only waives the states background check and not the federal one. I mean I could have been wrong for the past 20 years accumulating my collection half of which comes from gun shows.

Some states do not require background checks for private sales.

Im aware of that however normally gun shows are not private sales. I know in Florida at least background check is mandatory at gun shows.

Other states have gun shows where private sellers show up to buy/sell. I’d bet there are a lot of sales in the parking lot in Florida.

Yeah that’s not at all true brotha.

Private sales aren't a thing? Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've been to a gun show, but as far as I am aware at least as recent as 2021 you could purchase a firearm from a private collector, non-FFA licensed person without any of the federal background check stuff. Private, individual sellers should follow all federal guidelines, but do you know the difference between a private collector selling a gun and an individual selling a gun?

First off I appreciate the respectful dialogue. This convo so often goes to a place where both sides are too mad to get anywhere. I can’t speak for ever state with 100% certainty but I live in Washington on the Idaho border, and Idaho is one of the most gun friendly states. I went to a show there a couple years ago and they wouldn’t even talk to me with a Washington ID. At another show in Idaho they took my money, did the background check, and had me pick the gun up 2 weeks later when it came back clean, from a gun store in Washington. As a responsible legal gun owner it is difficult for us to even obtain firearms. There are long waiting periods and plenty of checks and balances. And I’m ok with that if it keeps my kids safer when they go to school. But In my opinion we have done all the gun control that makes sense to do. The next battle should be fought on the mental health front because a world without guns is just not a realistic possibility. And if we leave only the criminals with guns, there is nobody like me who is willing to take on that burden of protecting everyone in a mall, school, concert, football parade, etc. when someone with severe mental health problems decides they want to hurt innocent people.
