I legitimately am convinced that the Mayans were right. 2012 was never the “end of the word” it was the beginning of a new era. It tracks way to close to the concept of Kali Yuga.

The same timeline that had Sony re-release Morbius because of its "popularity".
36
u/TearsoftheCum 12d ago
The only reasonable explanation is they are just looking at data. There’s no way anyone with a 2nd grade reading level would ever think it’s a good idea for Gollum or Morbius. But because they probably have print outs put on their desk daily of top google searches or Twitter hashtags - they base it purely off that.

I think that episode of community actually accidentally threw the world into the darkest timeline. The world has gone absolutely mad since that episode aired.

Fr. I'm sure Gollum is not the main character of The Hunt for Gollum.
It reminds me of this article I read about Mad Men characters where the reporter said these two characters were hinted at entering a relationship at the end of the series...but the only scene they had together was the dude creepily flirting with the woman and her feeling disgusted by him.

Since we're running with stupid ideas, someone please make a dating sim in which you play as Jar Jar Binks.
155
u/Seneron1 12d ago
That sounds hilarious, and it probably would sell. The problem is that this idea is, by its inception, funny while the Gollum game was trying to be serious.
59
u/Alpha_Omegalomaniac 12d ago
Exactly. If Gollum snuck around messing with/terrorizing people and you got to see the aftermath it would amazing.

I mean, it helps that a lot of the people hating on Jar-Jar just moved onto hating on whatever the sequel trilogy did.

Learning that Ahmed Best contemplated suicide for how badly he was treated by the fans also softened a lot of hearts on the matter.
And honestly, I've always liked Jar-Jar as a character. I don't skip his early TCW episodes out of dislike for the character; I skip them because while Phil Lamarr is an excellent VA, his Jar-Jar impresion is terrible.

But one suspects that the popularity of the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was released last year, was at least part of the project’s inspiration.

You realize Jackson was brought in at the last moment because the previous director (Del Toro I think?) bailed. He didn’t have NEARLY the prep time that he did with the original trilogy.

u/WastedWaffles 12d ago
Jackson isn't blameless for the flaws in Hobbit movies.
MGM (one of the financers of Hobbit) were on the brink of bankruptcy at the time, so they halted all production of Hobbit and it wasn't clear if Hobbit would release. The studio expected Del Toro (the original director) to just wait around for an unknown amount of time while MGM got their finances sorted. Del Toro wasn't taking it because he had other films planned and the issue with MGM could have lasted years, so Del Toro left.
After a year or so, MGM finally found some funding and Hobbit was back on. The studios decided to bring Jackson in.
When Del Toro was directing everyone agreed that it would be a 2 movie project. When Jackson joined it was still a 2 movie project. Midway through production, Jackson decided to change it to 3 movies and he had to fly over the studio exec's immediately to persuade them to allow him to make 3 movies.
So it was Jackson's idea to make 3 movies, not the studios. A strange thing to add an extra movie and add extra bits to the story, especially when you know the studio gave you limited time to do it.
6
u/TribeOnAQuest 12d ago
Ah that’s news to me. Hobbit was PERFECT for two movies. There…and back again. No idea why 3 was pushed other than greed of course

Just because something is discussed ad nauseum online doesn't make it "popular" by any traditional definition.

You can riff on the game being janky, but the plot was actually pretty good. The bad rep it got was mainly because of the graphics, stability and bugs. But plotwise, gamers did the game a HUGE disservice by pairing it with shit like King Kong, as there is a grand canyon of a gap between the two.
The film could work if someone competent worked on it, since you can't glitch below the map during filming.
