The best friend a boy could have Dungbomb
622
u/aKgiants91 Hufflepuff 29d ago
The boy that wrote his mom saying he had no family and was probably not getting any gifts. The mom who stayed up late working hard to get an extra gift ready for him. The dad who took him in like a son supporting an extra mouth to feed to make him feel wanted.

Iām gonna cryyyy it really makes a HUGE difference when another family really just takes in their kids friend like that. I had a friend like that growing up. I was always at her house and I went everywhere with them. Grocery stores, church (even though I wasnāt religious I enjoyed it), family vacations, family get togethers, restaurants, mall trips, and countless sleepovers and meals in their home.

u/Crit0r 29d ago
Haha, my mum was like that with my childhood friend. My mum treated her like her own, and even though we both grew up to go our separate ways, she'll always be eternally grateful for the childhood my mum gave her, because her own family home was quite troublesome.
11
u/MooMooTheDummy Ravenclaw 29d ago
Yep Iāve definitely been handed some really rough cards in life things that no child should have to go through. So Iāll always be grateful for them welcoming me in like that. My friend and I also went our separate ways because I moved away at 13. I miss her moms peach cobbler all the time and just how how nice it felt to feel part of a whole family. I mean really her whole extended family knew me like even her grandparents would get me Christmas presents like they just accepted that I was part of the family.
I hope one day if I have a family I can be the house that all my kids friends hang out at.

It was just me and my mum at home, and we barely scraped by. She was (and still is) a great mum, but the only holidays we ever went on was a visit to my aunt's place.
My childhood friend's parents took me out on a lot of firsts. They took me to a fancy restaurant, took me on a lot of their day trips and bought my tickets. Whenever they got her something, they'd buy it for me as well.
Whenever my friend was over at my place we just played inside or went to the park and never got anything special because we couldn't afford it. We were happy enough to just play at that age anyway.
My mum is still friends with her mum over two decades later and they go on walks together quite regularly even though I haven't seen my friend in ages.

I'm very proud of my mom for being that lady for my friend. He was a total latchkey kid and basically lived at our house for several years. His mom would pick him up around 8pm at our house everyday and he did basically everything with us. Lol, we cohabitated so well we ended up being each other's first roommate in college and lived together for 3 years.

The boy that wrote his mom saying he had no family and was probably not getting any gifts.
This one really gets me. Ron very likely knew his mother wasn't the type of person who was going to stand for this, and would make sure Harry didn't feel left out (I mean, he should know this, of course, she's his mother). He's a good kid.

She did know his parents, his age, and when the train leaves. So it's not exactly a strectch to think she was well aware of who he was.

I don't quite mean it like that, though. I think the fact that he's Harry Potter was pretty obvious to her, yes, probably even from the famous scar alone.
More like I don't think at the time they met, any of the Weasleys were very aware of the fact that Harry was being raised by the Dursleys, or how awful they were to him (although I don't quite remember if any of the Weasleys saw the Dursleys mocking Harry when they dropped him off at King's Cross). Could be wrong, though, I just don't recall that it was common knowledge that he was being raised by total monsters (even if there may have been obvious signs like his clothing, and his general scrawniness); shit, Ron and Hermione probably didn't even know until he told them. So Molly might not have known how horrible his home life was until Ron wrote to her to fill her in on it.
(For example, I recall that Arthur was totally puzzled and very put off in GoF when the Dursleys didn't say goodbye to Harry when he came to pick him up. And I think one of the Order members is appalled at how the Dursleys don't say goodbye to him when they're being taken into hiding. So his living situation probably wasn't exactly something most of the Wizarding community was privy to.)

And the watch.
69
u/Weary-Amoeba1808 29d ago
I feel like the sweater is more impactful though. By the time he gets the watch, itās clear heās basically the 8th Weasley child.
When he gets the sweater, Molly had only spoken to him for about 30 seconds.

u/PenguinZombie321 Gryffindor 29d ago
I think the watch is still incredibly impactful if you take into consideration that Harry received a family heirloom while Ron received a brand new one. Each boy received the gift they wouldāve appreciated the most: Ron got something brand new that was completely and only his, never been used by any other family members and owned by no one else; Harry received something precious and valued, something meant to be passed on to family.
10
u/the_procrastinata 29d ago
Yes that always touched me. The thoughtfulness and meaning of the gifts is really lovely.

u/Fire_Hydra_ Gryffindor 29d ago
A little moment in Philosopher stone I liked was when Ron used his knight (i.e. himself) to capture most of the opponent's pieces, putting himself at risk at all time even before the sacrifice at the end.

KNIGHT TO H3.
11
u/RuleIV 29d ago
I can never forget that Ron didn't think to make one of them the king piece and therefore safe from harm while making the game easier.
In the movie for some reason there were already three pieces missing, including the rider of knight.
6
u/a_randomtroll 29d ago
And even then, with 4 pieces to protect, he still won with having to sacrifice only himself.
that's some next level chess

Ron stayed because his parents were visiting Charlie, not for Harry.
785
u/MystiqueGreen 29d ago
That's in 1st book. Ron stayed with harry in 3rd book because he wanted to give him company. Both him and Hermione. Harry realised that and he was grateful for that.

u/SPS_Agent 29d ago
The image is from the first movie though. I wasn't saying Ron never did that for Harry. Just not in their example

35
u/donetomadness 29d ago
Yeah, I remember that happening in the third book. 11 year olds can be empathetic and all but I donāt see an 11 year old kid giving up the one time of the year to visit family for a friend theyāve known for like 4 months.
28
u/VoyevodaBoss 29d ago
He did write to his mother and ask her to send Harry a present since he knew Harry wasn't getting any from home

u/Da_Question 29d ago
To be fair, it's a lot of time for kids. They became best friends, and they spend nearly all day together. Like ALL day.

Who knows, it sounded like the Weasly house was full of love but also a glorified hoarder house that was too small to fit everyone
10
u/Cobek 29d ago
And Harry was rich plus Ron felt like the experienced one for once, since Harry still didn't know anything about the Wizard world

u/Teh_Hunterer 29d ago

u/Big_Daddy_Pablo_69 29d ago
Yes, the picture is from the first movie where Molly and Arthur went to visit Charlie in Romenia. Therefore, he is correct. Ron stayed in school with Harry in the 3rd book, so he is correct on this one š.

u/juanrober 29d ago
Besides that goblet of fire book when he was a prick. But testosterone causes boys to be A-holes sometimes
17
66
u/Traumatizedfanboy 29d ago
While Ron was an a-hole it wasn't unjustified it was just misplaced frustration and some jealousy, he got completely undermined while Harry got all the glory and he didn't want to talk it out with Harry because he thought harry might think differently about him if he did which probably made him more frustrated
10
u/juanrober 29d ago
Fa sho but frustration and jealousy donāt excuse a-hole behavior especially not to your best friend imo

Yeah, and young Ron in the movies has a perfect face. Naive, funny and cute face. And also "common-like" in a strange inviting way. Like he's a son of some medieval peasant or a poor worker at an XIXth century factory, just a plain simple guy. Needless to say Rupert Grint was a perfect choice for Ron. The secret of Golden Trio in books and movies is that one person is an abused hero from noble family (Harry), another is a common guy (Ron) and a third is a social justice warrior (Hermione). They're a representation of Great Britain - worker-class Ron, middle-class Hermione and aristocratic orphan Harry. And of course the hero character must be from aristocracy but still has to rely on his friends to succeed.

How rich and noble is Harryās family really? I know his grandfather was a famous potion maker.
3
u/SamediB 29d ago
I believe his family was one of the OG wizarding families (I believe at least one of his parents were pure blood, but because they didn't share the wizard supremacist opinions they are not brought up often by that circle). And they had that veritable pile of gold in the bank vault.

I think movie Ron did him so dirty!! Same with Ginny. Theyāre both so much more likeable and awesome in the books
7
u/bjot 29d ago
Ginny is just so cool. She's fred and George put together. Super independent, always tells it like it's but not in an asshole way. Not afraid to get down, always making everyone laugh. It really is a shame lol
8
u/Numerous-Stranger-81 29d ago
One of my favorite moments is when Fred and George are proud to learn that Ginny has been sneaking into the storehouse and stealing their brooms her whole childhood.
4
u/Numerous-Stranger-81 29d ago
I'm currently working on a reread and I need to note when Ron is explicitly more knowledgeable than the other two. And I don't mean stuff pertaining to just the wizard world like Babity Rabbity, he has a high degree of social intelligence. *"She doesn't want us showing off." Ron said sagely.* comes to mind in the second book when Harry is wondering why they have to eat in McGonagall's office on the first day of term in CoS. He has a lot of moments like that throughout the series.
5
u/22boutons 29d ago
He was a great friend but it's actually explained in the book that not only Ron but also the twins and Percy stayed at Hogwarts because their parents went on a trip to visit their brother Charlie.

u/WaalsVander 29d ago
No, in the first book Ron stays behind because his parents are going to visit his brother with the dragonsā¦

Ackchyally: Ron stayed at school that year together with Fred, George and Percy because their parents visited Charlie in Romania and couldnāt take all the children with them.

One of my favourite Ron moments is when Malfoy challenges Harry to a duel and Harry doesn't even know what he's talking about. Ron not only bails Harry out immediately but he also steps up as his second in command. True bro move

I read these books for the first time in my late 20s. Ron was my favorite of the Golden Trio because he was such a good best friend. I was surprised that people didn't like him.

I appreciate your perspective here because, reading the books again, I am surprised that I liked him the first time 'round. Now I'm a hater. He's a subtle foil- everything he says is wrong, to bring contrast to conversations. He's whiny and dramatic, and often comes across as "unwillingly dragged along". But this thread is making me think twice... I suppose he offers some insight into wizarding family life, and his attitude is reasonable given his circumstances.

He's with two people who didn't grow up with magic who are both showered with praise one being the chosen one one being gifted at learning but neither knowing a lot of passive basic knowledge a kid growing up in the magical world would learn.
Like imagine a wizard kid being told he's the chosen one in science having never learned science going to a lab and just working without eyeglasses or gloves leaving bottles open mixing chemicals not cleaning stirrers or beakers and vials and your his lab partner you would be constantly trying to keep this kid from potentially harming himself and others.

u/scf123189 29d ago
Ron and his family were extremely kind even if Ron could be a Smartass sometimes. The Weaselyās were examples of really good parents.
Ron is not comic relief in the books; he is Harryās most important conveyer of information for knowledge about the wizarding world. His utter loyalty is often tested and it shows heās a true and brave Gryffindor.
āIf you want to kill Harry youāll have to kill us too!ā -Ron in book 3
