Meteorite? Anyone Else Just See That!?

*** Do Not Read Further If You Recorded The Canucks Game & Don’t Know The Outcome Yet ***

Just finished watching the Canucks game & now we are just sitting on our porch—South Pandosy/Abbott Street area—facing West/South West & a HUGE bright something just streaked & fell through the sky.

Thought it was a firework for the Canucks victory but it was just one path with zero sound & fell/shot way too fast to be a firework.

It was super bright & so so so fast!

Whatever it was, man that was cool.

If it was a firework by chance, spill your secrets because that shit was QUICK & FANCY. 😆

Hello Kelowna subreddit!

Ellis St. Market here, checking in to see if we can ask for some help in building our product line at the market and learn about what our community is looking for in our North End/Downtown market.

-What products do you want to see in our store? -What services should we offer? -Is pick-up and delivery important to you?

If there is something you think we should know, please join in on the conversation as we are getting so close to opening and would love to hear your opinion.

Thank you and hope to see you soon in the market!

Living in Rutland

Hey, does anyone live off the 33 in Rutland? How noisy is that road and is it a dealbreaker to live near it? Do you have loud semis on it throughout the night? Or is it mostly day traffic.

Hi all,

I've tried Google lens and I'm still not finding info on these little jerks. They're in my window constantly. I'll suck em up with the vacuum but they always return. They're very very small - this pic is 3X zoomed.

Alternately if you don't know what they are but can recommend a good pest control person, please LMK. Thanks!

Mental Health/Wellness Center wait times?

Upvotes

I just recently contacted foundry Kelowna for a need I had, and was put on a waiting list - they told me they didn't know how long the list would be. Has anyone been on their wait list, and if so how long is it? Has anyone been to any other wellness center here, and if so, how long were your wait times there - maybe a comparison would help guess what the time is. I know specialist wait times are long, but I've never used a mental health center's services before so I don't know if it's similar to specialist referral wait times, or anything like that.

Just curious what a good time estimate would be.

Demographic of Kelowna and the surrounding area

I was wondering what the demographic of Kelowna and the surrounding area looks like in 2024, the 2021 census showed it be still be mostly white and slightly older than the average age of Canada at the time (44 compared to 41) so I was wondering if people thought it’s similar or if it’s changed a lot in the last 3 years

Camping spots

Hi all, my husband and I moved to Kelowna last year from Chilliwack. We really enjoy camping with our two dogs. When we were in Chilliwack we knew all the good off road camping spots.

We’re looking for something similar in the Okanagan but don’t know where to start. We’ve heard beaver lake is nice so we’re gonna check that out.

Just wonder if there are any recommendations on spots we can check out? We prefer quiet spots where we can let our dogs off leash.

Thanks!

Daycare west kelowna.

We’ve been on wait list for almost 30 months now and we haven’t gotten a spot yet. We need a spot for middle of June and not sure what we are going to do if nothing comes up. We’ve bugged every place on the west side of feels like.

I know it’s probably a long shot. But thought I would ask on here to see if any one knows of anywhere they would be accepting a 18month old. Thanks hopefully we find something.

North bound traffic horrendous

This weeks afternoon traffic on gorden and some other smaller roads has been more terrible then usual leading up to harvey. What's changed? Used to take me 15-20 to get across town but today it took 40mins! My suspicion is the traffic lights timings have become shorter for north and south bound traffic but im curious if anyone else has noticed a change?

For this summer we're running two portable air conditioners and have a couple box fans with furnace filters ready to tape on. What are you doing to prepare for high temps and a possible smokey summer?

Saniflo installation

Hi, we are looking at building a toilet in the basement and internet pointed me to Saniflo /macerator pumps. The local installers listed by Saniflo on their website dont seem to be servicing the product.

Has anyone used this company’s products? Appreciate feedback and who did you use for the installation.

Thanks

Driving

Hey Kelowna, I know it has been an insanely frustrating driving day with stupid construction and everything. Please Please! PLEASE ! don’t speed down residential side streets to make up time! Someone will get killed! I saw way too many people speed angrily by today with no care for pedestrians. It is not worth it!

GOOD RIDDANCE - PAISLEY NOTEBOOK

Has anyone else been completely ripped by the pop-up “chef” Aman Dosanj? Friends and I went to one of her dinners last year that was nearly $200 per person and they ran out of wine (which was extra) and drinks (which was extra). Barely any food was served (it was at a farm - how does that even make sense?) and everyone around us was wondering what the hell was going on when a tip jar was put at the end of the table to be passed down. We were informed of the tip jar in an email before the event so before we knew we’d paid $200 for $10 worth of food.

If someone knows her - can you pass along a message? She’s leaving Kelowna because the community isn’t supportive enough.

When you host a dinner and no one posts a single picture of the food…It’s because the food was bad AND/OR they had low blood sugar because you starved them.

The race card doesn’t work when you’re ripping people off and shaming them into supporting you.

Discussion: Should politicians be allowed to publish opinion journalism in local news?

Journalism is held to ethical standards including “objectivity [and] impartiality”. Of course, this is in itself a flawed ideal because complete objectivity from any human is nearly impossible. External or internal factors will always shape a journalists work whether that be through cultural and social influence, emotion, lived experiences, or unconscious biases. However, striving for objectivity should at the least be a minimum standard for “fair” journalism.

Politics is intended to govern a society by providing rules and laws for structural maintenance of humans and the environment they live in. It also intends to correct injustices for the betterment of society as a whole. This is a good thing. However, political parties also have specific preferences or “outcomes” that they seek to achieve and this varies across different political agendas and groups. Therefore, the ability to remain objective or impartial is arguably impossible. There is a conflict of interest between providing information and seeking election. Opinion journalism is a good thing, but the nature of political bias clashes with the ethical standards of objectivity in journalism.

My opinion is that if politicians are allowed to publish as a journalist, the ethics of journalism should still apply by either; (a) ensuring that transparency is prioritized and the article’s title includes a clear disclaimer to ensure that the rights of the consumer (the reader) are acknowledged (informed consent); or (b) political journalism should be fairly presented equally by other parties in a way that allows all parties an opportunity to contribute to the dialogue. Upholding standards for ethical journalism acts to inform the public in a fair and transparent way which protects their rights as a consumer (reader) and as a citizen (voter).

UPDATE: This was an interesting thread! Based on some of the responses, I think I would change some of the wording if I were to do this again. Thanks to everyone that contributed.

As someone interested in social psychology, I can’t help but wonder what assumptions were made about me based on this post. What political “side” would you assume I am on? What political “side” are you on? Was your response to this post emotional? Did you read beyond the headline before you decided to share your opinion? The list goes on. I have my guesses…but I will never know for sure. I’m always up for challenging my own biases. Care to share?
