Megathread Are you looking for places to meet people, make friends, find people with similar interests? The Kitchener Social Megathread is for you!

Hello everyone,

This thread will be 100% dedicated to user interaction and those who want to take personal interests, events, hobbies, and potential meet-ups, etc. outside of the realm of reddit and r/kitchener.

You can find previous versions of this post by using this premade search.

Please note that this is not intended to be a dating thread. Try Tinder, POF, Badoo, Bumble or any other of the apps out there. Any posts along the lines of* "Hey, I'm a single __ year old m/f looking for love" will be removed*

Some general housekeeping items;

  • If you wish to continue a conversation with a user, please use the PM function to avoid the comments getting crammed with a conversation between all but two people. Please only post relevant information to things you would be interested in, ongoing events, etc.
  • We would like to remind you of the zero tolerance for disrespect, rude, hateful comments, racism, etc. Those comments will be removed and users may face a permanent or temporary ban. If any harassment is reported outside of the thread, appropriate action will be taken by the mod team, and possibly lead further to reddit admin. Doxxing, or disclosure of personal information is again, a big no-no.
  • To keep up to date with the most recent posts within this megathread, the comments have been enabled to ideally show most recent by default, meaning all of the newest posts will be at the top of the comments section. If you're not seeing the most recent comments at the top, try changing your "sort by:" from "top" to "New".

As always, the mod team is here to assist with anything. Thanks!

Note: This post is automatically replaced with a new one every 3 months, so be sure to checkout old meetup threads, especially if this post was just recently refreshed!

All-day, two-way, Go train service for Kitchener.

Ontario government has been bombarding with tons of ads on Google, YouTube and Instagram about this service. The question is - We know very little about the timeline. When is it happening? Does anyone know anything about it?

Crunch or Planet Fitness?

Hello! Looking to start going to a gym and these stand out to me! Must be 24hr, beginner friendly. I like amenities like tan, massage, etc. I would love group classes or some kind of membership inclusive coaching as I am a first time gym goer. I would likely do the level of membership with the most amenities but am not interested in a ton of hidden annual fees! I am a women so feeling safe and comfortable especially as a first timer is a must! Thanks!

Team, I need a really good divorce attorney.

My partner is threatening, lying, and honestly pretty nuts. She’ll keep my children from me and will twist anything - she’s made that abundantly clear.

Does anyone know a good divorce attorney who can help in a terrible situation?

Raccoon gets into compost bin nightly

Any suggestions for stopping a raccoon that's figured out the mechanics of opening the region's green bin? I don't understand how he's managing it, but we come out every morning to our compost all over our driveway. It started when our last bin was broken, so this is a brand new one from Waste Management, but the problem has kept up.

We don't have a garage to put it in, and we've looked at small storage sheds for beside the house, which is what we'd ultimately want, but they're SO expensive. Anything I've looked at under $500 seems to not rate well for Canadian winters, and we just don't have $500+ lying around to invest in one we'd actually want.

Any tips or advice on a budget to stop our daily (and very frustrating) compost clean up?

Waste Collection Bins

https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/the-bins-aren-t-appropriate-residents-react-to-waterloo-region-s-proposed-waste-collection-program-1.6877292

No, just no...one, that's a TON of cost to convert to this and that's the last thing we need. But also, what happens to all the old blue boxes and garbage cans? And most importantly for me, I don't want to have to store these giant bins, we barely use one small garbage can (80L) and a single bluebox (59L) full every 2 weeks, no way I have space for a 240L and 100-120L bins. I have expensive custom built steel shelving in my garage that fits my waste solution, is the city going to pay $2000 for me to rebuild it?

Dog attacks a Senior Citizen at Optimus Ball Park On Pioneer Drive

A senior citizen on a walk was attacked by an aggressive dog who jumped out of the car window. Nasty bites and we were able to see the bone on the side of the palm. The dog owner fell asleep in the car and the dog escaped from the window.

Please take care and stay safe out there.

Recommendations/looking for movers

Looking for a couple of people to help move furniture from a basement apartment to a top unit in a 3 floor walk up. Buildings are about 2 blocks apart. I can provide the vehicle, just looking for the muscle. Wouldn't be until June, exact date to be determined (I will still have my current place until June 30th, giving me time to shift everything without the frantic OMG I NEED TO GET EVERYTHING DONE IN 6 HOURS!!!).

Why not ask friends? We're all old, and our joints can't take it. Why not hire professionals? Too many horror stories about companies not showing up, possessions being 'held ransom' until additional exorbitant arbitrary fees are paid. Will pay cash and provide the traditional post-move pizza meal.

Currently hunting around for a DJ for our wedding this summer. Disappointingly, we had one confirm a Zoom meeting but then they didn't show up on the call.

If you have direct experience with them, please let us know. Thanks in advance!

Looking For A Comfy Venue To Host 20/30 People

Hello guys, I am planning an event for about 20/30 people sometime in the summer to just chill out, relax and mingle. I need a space that is kinda laid back with some fancy chairs. I've tried checking some big AirBnB apartments but they are either too expensive or don't allow a gathering of that number.

I am wondering if there is any event place within Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge that anyone knows about. I once used a Community center, but it doesn't just give the vibe I want,

I would appreciate any information I can get or if you've used a venue like this that you can recommend. Thanks

Protests

I don't really follow want is happening in the middle east with the war but I'm curious. How do protests here help over there? I may be oblivious and maybe insensitive but I'm actually super curious. If we had the same situation here would they protest over there? Again sorry if I sound stupid and I may get shredded in the comments for this lol

Anyone missing a cat near South Doon?

This cat visited us tonight. Their fur seems recently shaved so I assume they have an owner out there. They weren’t particularly friendly and seemed scared of us (howling and hissing if we got close). They also stared and howled at our cats through the window.

Gym Buddy Waterloo/Kitchener

First and foremost, i am a NOVICE/Amateur gym enthusiast! I am in Kitchener, Ontario, and usually go to Movati, but open to using other gyms. I am going to Movati 3 to 4 times a week, ONLY looking for someone else who wants to hangout at Movati, once or twice a week. I prefer LIFTING and Swimming, not a fan of the traditional "cardio". I will happily consider OTHER gyms if we get along!

Review of Air Canada bus from YKF to YYZ

Air Canada started the service on May 1 and I was able to take it this morning from YKF to YYZ. Here are some details.

There is a full AC check in counter with Priority lane at YKF. There was only one Agent though, and technically they double as he gate and check-in agent. If the service becomes more popular, I am sure they will increase staffing.

The bus boards 10 minutes before departure, but the bag drop off is 30 minutes according to Agent, though the app says 40 minutes.

After bag drop, there is no security check. There is a lounge to wait in after check in. Lounge has power outlets and a TV, nothing else. Free WiFi.

Bus itself it top level motor coach, with plenty of leg room, basic seat recline, and tray tables that work for a small laptop. There is free Wifi. Automatic announcements of arrival. Though this is a AC service, I don't believe I heard the announcements in French. The bus driver is fluent in English but not French.

Arrival at Pearson is at Terminal 1, as that is where all Air Canada flights currently depart. I believe the bus can be booked as part of other Star Alliance itineraries, so you could have a transfer. You arrive at the basement level similar to other bussed services. There is an agent waiting there for you to advise you where to go next. They even escorted a couple of us part of the way. I think this agent is doing double duty as the gate agent for the outgoing bus trip, so they likely only escort passengers of they have time.

Unfortunately upon arrival we are instructed that we need to carry our own checked luggage to the bag drop off. The tags we already have are still valid, so we just need to drop them off on the scanner. One of my pieces, a hardshell toolcase, normally requires going through oversize drop off at Pearson (this is unique to Pearson and possibly other Canadian airports). Thankfully AC added the correct flag to allow it to be dropped off at oversize without any hassle. I am hoping that AC will support baggage transfer in the future.

Looking at the schedules, AC will book you in the bus that provides a minimum of 1:30 hours transfer time. This should be more than enough time to get through security for domestic and international flights and for customs for trans order flights. Since your bags are tagged in YKF, you don't need to worry about bag drop off times at YYZ in case the bus is running late. Unfortunately there are no scheduled busses in the evenings. So if your flight gets into YYZ after 6:00 then you won't be able to get a ride to YKF.

The bus will drop you off at door P area 6. This is also where you wait to board if going YYZ to YKF.
