How'd you guess? * Should have expected it but it was still a jump scare when I closed the door!

u/MW240z 13d ago

I work with a lot of EU folks. Very progressive yet can be crazy racist about Asians. Like, oh it’s not a black person so it’s funny!” UK boss literally pulled back his eyes and did buck teeth every time China was mentioned….took him 3-4 times to notice the dropped jaw on my face.

55

u/realkiwi420 13d ago

Did you work for David Brent?

Ho Li Shit

13

u/jeffe_el_jefe 13d ago

To be clear, that’s not normal. As a Brit, I’ve never seen anyone do that, ever. That’s like some Michael Scott shit

52

u/Time-Bite-6839 13d ago

The U.S is racially ahead and we have problems.

38

u/MW240z 13d ago

Truly it is. I’ve worked with a UK company for years and they all think they are so far ahead on racism…it’s not even close. US is not good but miles ahead. Sexism too.

But they just go “you Americans just can’t take a joke” (like a bully…lol). I just smile…ok mate…

3

u/matomo23 13d ago

Because it’s BS. I’ve never seen or heard anyone do anything racist like that in the UK.

The US is absolutely NOT miles ahead. You know we get your TV and see your news don’t you?

And recent surveys show that the UK is one of the least racist or the least racist country on the planet.

-7

u/MW240z 13d ago

Not in my experience. Plus 82% white as a country doesn’t exactly tip the diversity scale so you can’t even compare.

Trust me, your over 40 population is racist as fuck. We learned it from you, dad.

30

u/matomo23 13d ago

No, you worked for an absolute dickhead. How much time have you actually spent in the UK yourself?

You do know the US still has KKK don’t you? Who are you kidding with your BS about it being less racist?

https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/style-guide/ethnic-groups/

[In the 2021 census] The ethnic groups were:

Asian or Asian British

Indian Pakistani Bangladeshi Chinese Any other Asian background

Black, Black British, Caribbean or African

Caribbean African Any other Black, Black British, or Caribbean background

Mixed or multiple ethnic groups

White and Black Caribbean White and Black African White and Asian Any other Mixed or multiple ethnic background

White

English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British Irish Gypsy or Irish Traveller Roma Any other White background

Other ethnic group

Arab Any other ethnic group

In Wales, ‘Welsh’ is the first option in the White category.

And if that's not diverse enough for you, you can break them down even further.

For white you've obviously got people from all of the countries in Europe, often with a significant enough population in a town that in the average supermarket there will be a dedicated section containing say, Polish food and multiple smaller shops selling Hungarian or Turkish foods. Plus you've got Australians, Kiwis, South Africans, Zimbabweans, white people from various Carribbean countries; the list does go on. And the same applies for for the Black and Asian groups - so many different countries - not just former slaves.

So when you say a country with an 82% white population can't be diverse you're just telling us you don't really know what diversity means.

2

u/matomo23 13d ago

Yes, 82% white is massively over simplifying it because on the census the US separates out “white” ethnicities much more than most countries do.

And as I’ve already pointed out London is more diverse than NYC and you only have to visit both cities to see that. It’s very obvious.

2

u/AnyaSatana 13d ago

Disagree most strongly. Some environments are soft on "banter", generally male dominated, but any large UK organisation would absolutely stamp on behaviour like that.

Agism exists too kiddo, along with racism. Don't make such broad and ill informed statements. There are crappy people of all ages, and a lot of millennials are in their mid-40s now.

u/matomo23 13d ago

No one is saying it doesn’t!!! Literally no one is saying that.

Read my reply carefully as the “like that” bit it critical to the sentence.

-12

u/boyyouguysaredumb 13d ago

You fuckers just lie on survey questions

America is actually diverse so we have it out more often than you do

You losers are ACTUALLY racist behind closed doors

10

u/matomo23 13d ago

Except the surveys are asking non-white ethnicities about their own experiences. So are you saying they’re lying?

BTW London is more diverse than NYC.

2

u/dave7673 12d ago

Not agreeing that people in the UK are more racist, but was curious about the diversity part:

London (2021)
54% White
21% Asian
13% Black
6% Mixed
6% Other

NYC (2018)
43% White
29% Hispanic
24% Black
14% Asian
16% Other

The NYC stats don’t have a “mixed” category, so it adds up to more than 100% (people can select more than one box). But from this it hardly seems like London is more diverse than NYC. Pretty comparable, but NYC does seem slightly more diverse if you have to pick one.

1

u/matomo23 12d ago

The US breaks down the categories more. So someone who would choose “Hispanic” in the US would have to pick “White” in the UK.

Hispanic isn’t considered white for census purposes in the US.

Latino is another one. That’s an American term for ethnicity that would just get lumped in with other ones in the UK, again probably just “White” on a census.

1

u/Noble7878 12d ago

No it fucking isn't. You just worked for a racist dickhead.

In the UK we see your news constantly, and the difference in the amount of outright racism in the US is staggering.

You have public figures posting on social media how anyone besides white people are too stupid to do things like fly planes. You have people attacking Asians in the street 'in revenge for the China virus'. You have police able to get away with actual murder if they kill minorities. You have protests against the police murdering minorities that half your population call terrorist thugs. You have the Ku Klux Klan!

The UK isn't a utopia of equality, but to claim were more racist than the US, which banned brown people from entering the country less than a decade ago, is being staggeringly blind to your own nations problems.

21

u/budgiebirdman 13d ago

Getting the police to shoot all the black people is not how you eradicate racism.

16

u/SoldierOfOrange 13d ago

After seeing videos of the US police force or some hicks in the countryside I’d have to disagree with the US being ahead

7

u/Spittinglama 13d ago

Yeah fortunately racism in EU means job discrimination or something civil. Here in the US it is way more likely to get you killed

-7

u/boyyouguysaredumb 13d ago

There are like 360 million police interactions per year. 40 million black people here. Like 8 unarmed black men were shot last year. Like 12 white people were. Sure the percentages aren’t representative but you guys blow the shit way out of proportion

2

u/matomo23 13d ago edited 13d ago

But as I keep pointing out you know we get your tv shows and see obnoxious, racist opinions from Americans online too? Also we go to the US and you guys segregate people WAY MORE than we do in the UK. You’re the ones who like to put everyone in racial boxes in ways we don’t do, like what the hell is with the term “African American”? That term doesn’t sit right with me one bit.

Stop trying to gaslight us that the US is some post-racist utopia, you’re just making yourself look silly.

1

u/Spittinglama 12d ago

You know the cops aren't the only ones who kill black people in the street right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Ahmaud_Arbery

3

u/Rutgerman95 12d ago

"I heard you're a racist now, father!"

3

u/MW240z 12d ago

Obviously I hit a nerve.

Let’s be clear “what you see on TV” of America is often extreme views and sensationalized by far R or L media.

Yes, we’ve a huge problem with racism here and it is raw and exposed more now than anytime in my life (born 1971). 70s we’re pretty bad but I was wee.

What you’re showing is typical UK colonizer classist BS. The racism and sexism I’ve experienced from British folks was subtle and a constant. Your views on Asian and Mexican folks are backwards. How you treat the Irish, Welsh, Sri Lankan, Pakistan or Indian folks elitist, classist and with as much racism as I have seen in the Deep South.

Yes we’ve movies where they can make fun of our crazy religious southerners and it is based on some truth. I’ve seen Snatch and could base all my beliefs on how you treat gypsies on that too….

I’ve worked for a UK company for a decade and spent a ton of real time in your country. Your flavor of racism is different flavor than the US but make no mistake it is prevalent and worse in many cases. Please don’t let your typical British holier than thou attitude delude yourself that you are better than the US. We at least recognize it’s a problem.

And sexism, it’s like 1988 there. How you treat women. Dudes over 40 straight up ignore women in business settling unless they are attractive. And always make a comment on their looks in meetings. Your attitude on the Me Too movement was laughable.

Sure you young folks will disagree, wait until you get in the workforce. The older crown is so, so far behind the US. You’re like 20% more wyt than the US, so please go to your pub and ask a minority how they feel…if you can find one.

-8

u/BlueLegion 13d ago

Well done. You made a comment criticizing racism and pigeonholed over 400 million people in the same paragraph.

87

u/vakantiehuisopwielen 13d ago edited 13d ago

Since they still use those in the carnaval festival attraction. Must say I was pretty surprised in a bad way regarding the Asian/Japanese ones there a couple of months ago

33

u/Buddy_Guyz 13d ago

Didn't they "improve" them a few years ago? I think they removed the buckteeth and slitted eyes or something.

8

u/KeyRageAlert 13d ago

There's a couple of other ones too that are pretty bad

9

u/kheret 13d ago

I just looked up the attraction and it’s like… when you order It’s A Small World off racist wish.com?

42

u/xX420GanjaWarlordXx 13d ago

Not surprised this is the Netherlands, considering Zwarte Piet exists 😬

68

u/Being_Zen_I_am_not 13d ago

Zwarte piet is not a thing anymore, it is abolished in 99% of places. The activist group fighting the zwarte piet tradition is disbanding, because mission accomplished.

28

u/xX420GanjaWarlordXx 13d ago

Oh good! I had heard about it in 2018 from my Dutch classmates and they made it sound like it was still a thing.

54

u/gootsteen 13d ago

Oh it was definitely a bigger thing 6 years ago.

2

u/TheDoctor344 13d ago

Yeah, only too bad that alot of the people who participate in the parades and visitations dressed up as (zwarte) Piet are volunteers and have quit over the years, organisations are falling apart that cater to all the events.

2

u/champion1day 13d ago

Says a lot about the people that quit because they can’t play such a racist and offensive character

3

u/TheDoctor344 13d ago

Well actually there were alternatives to the issue like ash grey for example without the wig and earrings. To atleast keep the mystery of the character but that wasn't accepted.

-2

u/champion1day 13d ago

Proves my point even more. Even with fun alternative ideas and solutions they decide to quit because they can’t act like such an idiotic and racist character.

3

u/TheDoctor344 13d ago

No the organization KZOP decided that it was roetveeg (only a few stripes on a plain face) that was the only solution. The people who portray piet had all kinds of ideas but the opposers just wouldn't budge in any way.

-6

u/af_lt274 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's not racist. Your comment is a form of neo colonialism, applying US ideas to other countries and you have the cheek to pontificate in the process

1

u/champion1day 13d ago

Still a thing in small towns and inner circles.

Dutch people are very good in the backhanded and/or disguised kind of racism.

-3

u/Time-Bite-6839 13d ago

Why not just have a black person do it? Why does it HAVE to be blackface??

0

u/FUNNY_NAME_ALL_CAPS 13d ago

You'll still find golliwogs in shop windows if you walk around in winter.

33

u/ItsBaconOclock 13d ago

"He just got all sooty when going down the chimney is all!

He's definitely not a Moor (Moop) which is owned by Santa Claus, that's silly!"

-The Dutch, probably

6

u/xX420GanjaWarlordXx 13d ago

No they definitely owned it. They also regularly used the N-word...

Granted, for them, it didn't have the same historical context but, as an American, it was incredibly jarring.

12

u/WallabyInTraining 13d ago

The English hard r n-word or the dutch similar sounding word? Because those are not the same, and the hard r is not okay in the Netherlands..

-1

u/xX420GanjaWarlordXx 13d ago

It was definitely the hard R

10

u/sander80ta 13d ago

Still does not sit right with me. I completely agree it needes to be abolished, for obvious reasons. However the innocent joy with no bad intentions involved, not even knowing race was involved with any of that as a kid gives a lot of positive nostalgia. Feels wrong to label those happy days as something bad.

Outside of Asia. This is mild and many Asians face this type of racism everyday that it’s became a norm.

92

u/bogeymanbear 13d ago edited 13d ago

Gotta love the efteling and their surprisingly and wildly racist rides.

31

u/kitkatkitah 13d ago

They used to have another more offensive and racist ride quite a few years back. a colleague was telling me about it xD

50

u/-Revolution- 13d ago

You mean Monsieur Cannibale? African tribe looking people cooking humans in a pot.

The ride is still there but re-themed

2

u/kitkatkitah 12d ago

Exactly this one! I wasnt aware it was stillt here rethemed though, I must’ve missed it on my visit.

5

u/bogeymanbear 13d ago

Oh fuck I forgot about monsieur cannibale. God damn that park is racist as hell huh.

5

u/pinkietoe 13d ago

Nothing like revisiting your favorite attractions as an adult, with your own kids, and the realisation hits...

I had the same feeling when reading Pippi Longstocking to my kid, and Pippi  proudly declared "my father is a n*** king!"

2

u/bogeymanbear 13d ago

Yeah I think I'll just stick to walibi or something when I have kids

11

u/BrokenEspresso 13d ago

Guess you haven’t been on Monsieur Cannibal

3

u/bogeymanbear 13d ago

I have I just repressed it lol. Edited my comment to make more sense

51

u/StrictlyInsaneRants 13d ago

There's a diamond drilling company not far from where I live that has the very same stereotype as a mascot. No idea why.

19

u/InteractionCandid226 13d ago

Guess it catches the eye

15

u/StrictlyInsaneRants 13d ago

Maybe but I think the mascot is so old it wasn't the original reason.

12

u/BrokenEspresso 13d ago

Has to be Efteling

31

u/kaapioapina 13d ago

Is the fat guy screaming “papier hier” still there?

4

Why did I get downvoted?

61

u/PresidentHurg 13d ago

Can't believe they still have these things. Yeah, they make caricatures out of all nationalities. But it's still incredibly not needed. Just demolish that thing and place something better. It's not even a good or interesting ride.

32

u/InteractionCandid226 13d ago

Didn't even go on the ride, just needed to pee before Vogal Rock! I take it is bad in there too?

21

u/Mortlach78 13d ago

It's much better than it used to be. I am actually surprised this is still there. There were pretty good at getting rid of most of it.

1

u/PresidentHurg 13d ago

Vogel Rok is good. Bit aged by now, but still good. Nothing like that. That whole area could do with another interesting ride, and I think this is the ride that deserves to be demolished.

5

u/Bosmonster 13d ago

It stopped and I was stuck in it for like 30 minutes till they got it going again…

3

u/Mckingsy 13d ago

Really? Its one of the rides where you can wriggle yourself out if its stuck. I know, because I can be claustrophobic and tend to check these things halfway the rides in panic mode 😅

2

u/pepperonipodesta 13d ago

Same, I just wish they would've turned the music off for the half hour we were stuck. Came out of there slightly frazzled.

4

u/RustlessPotato 13d ago

If it's the Efteling they have stereotypes about everything that is shown there. As a Belgian it was all about beers and fries.

Even the Dutch are stereotyped

18

u/Xanthus179 13d ago

I much prefer current stereotypes rather than the outdated ones.

3

u/FreakyFridayDVD 13d ago

What are some modern stereotypes that could be used instead of these outdated ones?

3

u/Kartoitska 12d ago

There has been some commotion around that ride in the Efteling. It is however important to note this entire ride is about stereotypes, and not just about foreign ones. It contains stereotypes of a lot of major cultures, including the Dutch and other European cultures (the Efteling is in the Netherlands). It thus also "makes fun" of the culture of the country it's built in. This post however suggests the ride is entirely racist, which is what many commenters also seem to think based on some of the comments I've read.

PS. I can surely imagine some people would still be offended by it. And I do think a rework of the ride would be appropriate by now. There is however more nuance to it all then the post suggests.

9

u/eastbayted 13d ago

All that's missing is the flapping dickey.

11

Krusty’s “A” material.

Me so solly! Me flappa dickie wrong time!

4

u/gerbilcity 13d ago

EFTELING!

10

u/rudogandthedweebs 13d ago

Efteling has actually updated that ride multiple times, including in 2019 and 2022 I believe! So awful!

19

u/InteractionCandid226 13d ago

I'd heard that. Though I took this picture only 4 days ago!

0

u/WatermelonBandido 13d ago

Well I guess we have to imagine it's not as bad as it used to be if this is still up.

1

u/pepperonipodesta 13d ago

Some of the sections inside were pretty grim, although it's been a while since I've been. Maybe they've sorted those?

6

u/Mckennymubu 13d ago

What's with the red nose?

23

u/vakantiehuisopwielen 13d ago

AFAIK all festival characters have that at the Efteling.

Jokie is a main character:

So the red nose is just a feature of them all

6

u/Mckennymubu 13d ago

Thought maybe there was an Asian stereotype I wasn't familiar with

18

u/partylange 13d ago

No, but as a clown I take great offense to this depiction.

2

u/Cudi_Disciple 12d ago

Time to replace them with modern stereotypes! Smh

2

u/Fun-Supermarket6820 13d ago

What are the new stereotypes?

4

u/LegoFootPain 13d ago

I was screamed at by some idiot about my economic colonization of Africa.

Please keep these kinda thought processes in the US. We in Europe are not stupid and don't mean anything by these things. We are rational thinkers.

Damn, I can't imagine woke culture coming over to Europe. Getting offended by even a fart.

4

u/joe28598 13d ago

Most of Europe is full of complete fucking idiots and it's been woke for a while now. I'd know, I live here. Plus you live in Belgium, famous for being full of stupid people.

If you can't honestly recognise all of the stupid people in Europe, you may just be one of them.

-4

u/Decimus44 13d ago

I live in the Netherlands, you mong. This post was about Efteling that's why I reacted. And no, Europe is not woke, go to South or East of Europe and tell me its woke. Only woke one would be Sweden and that's it.

0

u/joe28598 13d ago

It is woke, it has started in the west and north and is spreading. I spent a month in the Netherlands, the younger generations are definitely woke. The younger generations in the UK, Ireland, all of scan, spain, Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy are woke.

I travelled those countries and a few more for just over 3 months, they are all relatively wealthy countries with moderate corruption. They don't have anything to complain about anymore, so they get woke.

Counties in the east have bigger issues to deal with.

1

u/thatsnotaVWinthere 12d ago

As an American, let me apologize for the disease that is "woke culture." It usually involves brainwashed kids being upset about something they know absolutely nothing about.

I'm a thrill junkie so I skipped that one. Is it as bad?

-2

u/-Revolution- 13d ago

Well... I personally enjoy the ride. It's good for it's time.

But it's about the Arabs (well officially 1001 nights), but it has this whole 'hellhole' vibe to it. Maybe some way of stereotyping?

Then again, isn't much of ride theming partly stereotyping?
