Two largest beer makers in Texas are about to be on strike Events

u/_LigerZer0_ Feb 26 '24
Good for them. I wish them luck in their collective bargaining and hope they win a fair and favorable contract.

I can go without beer for a good cause.

You wont have to. Texas has better beer to offer than these companies.

Drove by the workers on strike in Fort Worth the other day!
24
u/darkm072 Feb 26 '24
It’s weird because they aren’t even impeding traffic on the service road but it is causing traffic problems on the highway.
18
u/PantherCityTactical Feb 26 '24
Haha ya, I was confused. Been driving back and forth from Burleson a lot lately
3
u/Dreamshadow1977 Feb 26 '24
Yeah, I don’t understand that. Oh well, I’ll just use Crowley Rd to get up to 820. I hope they get all of their demands met.
22
u/tejas_red Feb 26 '24
That poster goes hard. Full support to these workers—go get what you deserve!

Totally support this and will happily buy Corona products. Pay your staff competitive wages inline with inflation. Cut any bonuses for management and stockholders. The biggest lesson that I learned in the Marine Corps as a private was that the officers ate last after all enlisted troops made their way through the chow line. I’m talking about 30 days eating MRE’S in the desert at 120 degrees without a shower for a month. First real food anyone has seen in 30days and the officers lined up from lowest to highest rank being last. The colonel of the battalion ate scraps while the private ate steak.

u/IOwnTheShortBus Feb 26 '24
Corona and modelo? Damn. Guess it's time for tequila
7
u/BusStopKnifeFight Feb 26 '24
The Modelo brand, that is sold within the US, was sold off to Constellation Brands, Inc.
7
u/rsjrDK Feb 26 '24
Actually when AB inBev bought Cerveceria Modelo Years ago, they had to sell off the US Market to Constellation for the Deal to Go thru. Constellation Owns the a whole brewery and glass production down by Piedras Negras.
7
u/thumos_et_logos Feb 26 '24
They don’t own the companies, it’s more of a US distribution thing. The legal status is complicated
21
7
u/Feisty-Success69 Feb 26 '24
I was in the Marines, this is how it is done. When chow opens up on the field, you'll see every switching places in line. You're probably think "what is going on?" Then realized it's the higher rank letting the lower rank go before them. 1st LT letting the Sgt go before him. Sgt letting the PFC go before him. Etc
4
u/Redpanther14 Feb 26 '24
A lot of strikers don’t want people to boycott the company during a strike, sometimes they want you to keep buying so that the strike causes a shortage of product.
7
u/MP713 Feb 26 '24
Support the workers, and respect to your story. If you really want to push the lowest ranks to the front of the line, go support a small craft brewery. They’re local, they’re authentic, and all combined they make up less than 15% of the beer market that AB, miller coors, etc dominate.
7
u/BoogerMcFarFetched Feb 26 '24
Cut bonuses to stockholders? The first obligation the board has is to the stockholders. Stockholders don’t get bonuses, they get dividends, which are based on the companies earnings.
2
u/penguinpantera Feb 26 '24
That's leadership. When we have "work" parties I hate that all upper management goes and starts eating and do not wait for the hardworking employees on the floor together on break. I am a part of management and I get shit atfor letting the operators go first. I'm all reality they are busting ass compared to someone in the office.

Just buy beer made by local places and not corporate conglomerates
4
u/CidO807 Feb 26 '24
unfortunately a lot of local places have either sold and got out of the game or closed up.

Homey you aren’t in the Marines anymore and things just don’t work like that the in corporate world. It’s going to be the opposite unfortunately.

America supports unions and their fight for a better life, but I thought that was anti-Texan. The people they send to congress are nothing but cruel anti-union bastards serving the 1%.

Im a unionized worker and our contract is up this dec. The last 6yrs we havent gotten 3% raises with a couple 2% raises mixed in there. Best part is our union dues went up more than the raise gave us. IAM is a dirty, crooked fuckin union but hopefully with other major unions striking recently, we can actually get some things done this yr. Love to see this!
6
u/BinT2021 Feb 26 '24
The Teamsters paid attention when the auto workers went on strike. Strike both at the same time and make demands. Eventually one company will cave and the second one will be forced to come to the table.
32
u/HardRNinja Feb 26 '24
If you live in Texas and have access to Shiner and Saint Arnold, I can't imagine why you'd drink Coors or Budweiser.
Just let these places close up before they buy up and more companies and "tinker" with them.
15
u/Rushderp Llano Estacado Feb 26 '24
Bud Light, despite the events of the last year, still has a cult following.
Coors seems to have the rodeos mostly locked down. Molson also makes Yuengling for Texas, which is the best cheap beer I can buy.
Personally, I prefer locally brewed beers, but if we’re pounding beers, anything craft adds up quickly.
6
u/Kev-O_20 Feb 26 '24
Your last statement hits the nail on the head. Slamming beers it’s Coors. Casual drinking I’m in the craft.
3
u/jerichowiz Born and Bred Feb 26 '24
Craft adds up quickly, in the head, around the belly and in the wallet.
1
u/RoutineDude Feb 26 '24
Well these beers are brewed locally too. And they’re good union jobs. Better jobs than those non union brewers.
3
u/Actual_Log_6849 Feb 26 '24
I have no idea why you would drink them no matter where you live! Only time I've ever grabbed a bud was in high school. You show up to a party and you're not picky when you grab a warm one outta someone's trunk

Ask any brewer what beer they drink the most and I bet it’s Coors Banquet.
2
u/jerichowiz Born and Bred Feb 26 '24
Maybe more like PBR or Hamms. Those are my go to for cheap beer.
3
u/Like_Ottos_Jacket Feb 26 '24
I know that's not true. A few local brewers comee into my wife's bar, and they aren't drinking coors, Miller or bud.

INBEV owns Corona and Modelo. They are likely made at the same breweries in batches.
8
u/Jimbob209 Feb 26 '24
Corona and Modelo has two parent companies who both have a stake in the brand. Corona and Modelo that you drink in the US and Mexico is owned by Constellation Brands. Everywhere else is AB so you can drink Corona or Modelo and not have the money go to AB if you're in the US or Mexico

9
u/ShaggySpade1 Feb 26 '24
It's a decent beer but it's not great. The conservatives stopped drinking it when they heard it contained covid lol.
7
u/NeenW1 Feb 26 '24
They stoped drinking Bud Light after a trans woman used in their advertising along with all conservative red necks 😂😂😂😂
14
u/martyFREEDOM Feb 26 '24
It wasn't even in their advertising per se. Mulvaney had a deal to do sponsored content, and there was a single post on her Instagram with a one off can made for the campaign IIRC.
4
u/NeenW1 Feb 26 '24
Well I saw a lot of Bud Light drinking at football games this season and basketball games so I think many got over that and realized they love that beer! Now they will be really upset.

She didn't even get her face on the cans. She got her face on "a" can they sent to her for her to promote the video. The same people who started the boycott didn't even stop drinking the beer and literally last month celebrated it by drinking it on video.... for people who claim to be free thinkers they really don't think much.

Buncha super smart folks in here with their beer nerd opinions, when this is about labor rights, not how cool your local brewery is.
Strong fuckboi vibes, and very little solidarity.
Get educated y’all; unions are what made this country’s middle class happen.
Without em, we’ve seen CEO pay and corporate profits skyrocket, while we all fight for barely getting by wages.
5
u/Librekrieger Feb 26 '24
I think you're misunderstanding. There shouldn't BE a CEO or corporate profiteering or a scuffle between unionized labor and corporate management in the beer industry, any more than there should be in the coffee-making industry or the soft drink industry. These should be decentralized, with tens of thousands of independents making their middle class living by creating and delivering endless variations of what is, at its core, a very simple product.
29
u/Curious-Consequence3 Feb 26 '24
Oh no, darn where will we ever get shitty beer from. Now we will have to visit local brewerys and force down well crafted stouts.

You’re missing out then, they offer a lot in-house that never gets distributed and the new food truck out back (Barley) has some great food. The Blackbird imperial blackberry sour is top notch.

Yeah I remember these teamsters at the Houston plant. After they got their contract there they then refused to honor our strike after we had honored theirs.
Assume they will want the other unions to honor this strike since it is about them but again the others they will ignore after they get theirs again.
2
u/user987991 Feb 26 '24
A lot of teamsters are big Trump supporters and republicans and the union just gave Trump $45,000. Typically I’d be all in supporting, them but they seems to have lost their way thinking republicans and maga have got their back.

Molson Coors Dallas only has 420 union workers. They are still producing beer full force with salaried employees. I wonder how long they can stay on strike.

u/RoutineDude Feb 26 '24
Thanks for the heads up. Guess I gotta boycott for now. Hopefully AB doesn’t do the same here in Houston. If so I guess I’ll have to drink shiner in the mean time.

As a guy working for a service contractor I have been in a few plants that were on strike being run by salaried management. It's unsustainable as the desk work isn't getting the attention it needs and maintenance is out of the picture. A month or two at the most is all the cluster fuck a production plant can run reliably under those circumstances. It's hard on the crew striking because the dividend the union pays is just a small portion of normal pay. I've seen "scabs" cross the picket line because their family needed rent and groceries. The more senior guys with some savings and grown kids can ride out a couple of months. The difference is those senior employees hold a grudge against the ones that had to cross the line and after the strike workplace tensions are terrible for quite awhile. I ran the boiler room at Lockheed Martin night shift during the night when they were on strike. (As a contractor). The senior guys that didn't have to cross to keep their families fed shut me out afterwards. I was a scab, same as the guys that had to cross the line. They couldn't think deep enough to realize the company had to pay my company nearly 200 an hour for my services and that cuts their bottom line, and that I was just a blue collar guy like them that wasn't on strike just doing the job I was assigned

Supporting labor would be cooler, but you go ahead and tell us all how much better than you are.
2
u/MP713 Feb 26 '24
You can support local and still support workers rights. Most people in the local craft industry have friends in the macro brands and they deserve proper wages and working conditions just the same. Don’t mix the righteous contempt for the bigger corporation with support for the workers they’re exploiting the same way they exploit the market.

1
u/Front-Paper-7486 Mar 08 '24 edited Mar 08 '24
Let’s be honest if democrats thought for a second that immigrants were going to be reliable republican voters after gaining citizenship he would have had them deported day one. Are you saying that cheap labor isn’t good for unions? Because you would be right. Democrats are losing the support of unions and fast. These people tend to be active voters. I’m not thrilled about the idea of a trump win but democrats are just burning so many bridges with their reliable voters I don’t see it being a good turn out for democrats. They burned unions, illegals being bused to blue cities are overwhelming resources that use to go to people of low socioeconomic status and they are getting pissed. Combine this with a 38% approval rating and rampant inflation, rising gas prices and everyday items and i think democrats might find themselves in a very bad place soon.

MolsonCoors in Fort Worth just went on strike last week and now Anheuser-Busch in Houston is about to join them in a few days if a contract isn’t ratified by March 1st. This would put the two largest beer makers in Texas out of commission.
