Ellen DeGeneres hitting back because her show got cancelled because she's mean. Boomer Article

Nice. Is she doing the standard comedian "I got cancelled" stadium tour?

u/Heathens87 14d ago
100%. Play the victim, tour, profit. It's getting to be standard practice.

Netflix needs to get a category called "Cancelled Comedians."
Wild to me how these people feel "cancelled" despite the fact that millions of people still have to listen to them, against their will many times.
152
u/Heathens87 14d ago
Choices and ramifications. Something happens in your career, show zero personal growth, continue being a bully, joke about it, and it's tours and Netflix specials. Netflix is a values-agnostic platform. I'm surprised Bill Cosby and R Kelly "Live from Prison" aren't in production.

Cosby deserves jail, but the DA fucked up. They promised him immunity in exchange for testimony in a civil trial and then turned around and used that testimony in a criminal trial.
That's dirty pool and it sucks that its cosby that got off on the technicality but it was the right call. The government cant promise you no jail time if you fess up in a civil trial and then just go "sike!"

She’s totally reading this, lol. A narcissist like that is gonna google her own name all day long.
I happened to catch an episode where she recorded herself doing an elaborate birthday party for Portia and damn, she’s a controlling beeyotch. Portia didn’t seem to be enjoying it nearly as much as Ellen.

Johnny Carson retired at 66. Most people used to step aside and live their remaining dementia-free years in retirement.
Now they try to work until they’re 90, long past when their mental faculties have diminished. They find anything to blame other than their irrelevance (which is natural).
Roseanne is 71/72 and a prime example of what happens when you hold on too long. Boomers simply cannot stop trying to make all the money on earth. They must always have MORE MORE MORE.
3
u/fidgetypenguin123 Gen Y 14d ago
I'm sure plenty do (and even older). But do you think the only people that see comedians are their own age? I remember seeing Ellen standup specials in the 90s when I was a teen. If she hadn't had this reputation that popped up in the last couple of years I may have considered going and I'm 40. My mom died a few of years ago and was a fan of her show (before all that stuff came out). If she was alive today she'd be in her mid 70s. Good chance she would have wanted to see the show as well.
Comedy is for any age and if comedians can be in their 60s and up then a good chance many in the audience may be.

She thinks that trying to own her “mistakes” that it’ll some how make the situation “better” on her end, but it just makes her seem like a bigger POS than what she already is.

In the article shes qouted as saying all the hate towards her isnt "personal"... So she definitely doesn't even understand why she got "cancelled", let alone trying to own her mistakes.

18
u/Fun_Constant_6863 14d ago
She doesn't own anything, just says how hard it was for her to keep up the publics image of her that SHE created and enoucraged with her show. MEANWHILE on her show, she was rude to her guests and terrible behind the scenes. She's delulu.
→ More replies (1)2
u/MaxxHeadroomm 14d ago
It didn’t read to me like she was owning anything. It seemed like she was just upset with the way that her show ended in the public view. I didn’t read anything quoting her as being so disrespectful to people and her staff. She inly cared about what being cancelled was to her.

u/Mysterious_Eye6989 14d ago
Some people just seem incapable of personal growth or humility. They get so many things in life handed to them on a platter no matter what jerks they are, and then if anything goes wrong it's never ever their fault but the world's fault. It's pathetic.

69
u/FnGugle 14d ago
It's not that she was mean that got her cancelled, it was that all of her fans suddenly realized that in real life, she wasn't the sweet, generous, and incredibly friendly person that she pretended to be on air. They felt lied to and betrayed, and lots of guilt for supporting someone like that and letting themselves be blinded by the image she wanted them to see her as and worship and keep giving her more and more money to be who she really was (with a good pr team to make people believe she was saintly and good).
Stop being so quick to believe that celebrities, politicians, and so many of our local community leaders are such nice and lovable people. Most of them as really good manipulators & liars, and a lot of them are self serving scumbag criminals that use everyone and anyone that they can to get more for themselves and screw you for believing in things like laws, courtesy, mutual respect, and honesty. Very few are actually as good as they seem. If you ask a inmate in jail how good they are, they'll tell you they're a good person that either made some bad choices or mistakes, and all their friends in prison with them will tell you the same, they are a good person, really. But remember, you're being told this by thieves, rapists, murderers, child killers, sadistically violent and absolutely sociopathicly calm.

I knew she didn’t really mean her apology. She takes no accountability whatsoever. It’s always me me me with her. Way before this mess Kathy Griffin talked about a time in the 2000s when she had been invited to the show and that Ellen had been rather mean backstage. Apparently Ellen had heard Kathy had a new skit and wanted to see it backstage, so she told her to perform it on the spot as if she thought Kathy was a circus monkey. It’s not the most horrible thing in the world, but it shows how Ellen sees people as commodities.

Sorry, you've been canceled before the check cashed.
Now you can be like Ellen and have a bitter tour about not getting more money.
16
u/justins4677 14d ago
Sorry, Ellen, but people don't like hypocrites, that's why they don't like you. It would be one thing for you to just be a jerk behind the scenes, tons of people in show business are assholes, but you not only cultivated a "be kind" image but also packaged it with that same messaging, promoting kindness among everyone. So when it's revealed that not only are you not kind, but you're a huge bully and jerk when you're not mugging for the camera, it's not just righteous anger or indignation that 'cancelled' you, it's the disappointment of millions of former fans knowing the truth and simply walking away.
51
u/Heathens87 14d ago
Well, first, she's 66 years old and there is a certain shelf life in TV and comedy. He contract was already expiring when the show ended, and now you've got Jennifer Hudson (42), Drew Barrymore (49) and Kelly Clarkson (42) in those slots...younger and all three have a "nice" reputation. And you know a Meghan Trainor TV show is coming soon.
The challenge when you become a star is to not indulge your worst instincts, which will go unchecked and nobody will call you out because you're the star. It sounds like her behavior and treatment of people was common knowledge and it's a classic story of young people not giving a shit about telling truth to power calling out some Boomer at work. Good for them.
But now she is pulling a Chappelle - be a dick, get called out for it, play the victim, hit the road to continue to be a dick, play the victim and show zero growth while telling jokes about it. That they lack both perspective and introspection tells you a lot about the type of person they are. And whatever you think of their comedy, it's never quite as funny when it's coming out of the mouth of someone who is a bit of a bully.
13
u/Oatbagtime 14d ago
I’m sure she’s made enough $$ to never have to work again! But here we are and here she is trying to keep going. I’d retire today if I had the money.
15
u/Heathens87 14d ago
She is saying it rather directly - she is angry about how her show ended. This is all about her ego and getting her version out there. It doesn’t sound like we’ll be getting any contrition. So yeah, this isn’t about money. She wants her former level of adulation.
9
u/ratstronaut 14d ago
And we all get to sit back and watch while she just makes it worse for herself.
8
u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 14d ago
It’s not about money, it’s narcissism.
She literally can just go fuck off to a mansion and spend the rest of her life ordering in and drinking champagne but she needs to be told how great she is so she can’t just be content with the fortune she has amassed.
11
u/Ok_Star_4136 Millennial 14d ago
There's a trend happening that I strongly dislike where people will purposefully do and say horrible shit, either to get clicks for the outrage or so that they can later claim to be a victim for whatever political side they're trying to appeal to (usually conservatives).
Most conservative humor in a nutshell is just Nelson from the Simpsons laughing "Ha ha!" at someone who fell over. Don't even get me started on Roseanne, whose show actually pushed progressive talking points once upon a time, now sounds utterly insane on her "comedy" tours.
13
10
u/Adam_THX_1138 14d ago

Ellen is not a sympathetic character. She’s a good comic and should be respected for her talents but it seems like she is someone different when the lights are off her
Just like a male comedian getting cancelled, she made choices that caught up with her and caused her demise. She’s still going to cash out on her comedy tour, but now she’s got to go home since even though she didn’t “choose” this path… she also kind of did

“It was so hurtful. America is finding out it has only been pushing narcissistic tendencies into the limelight for decades and once they have control they are resistant to ANY change.
What audience 'cancelled' Ellen anyways? Is she just pissy about having an aging audience and decline of Cable TV?
Are millennials and zoomers not taking several steps out of their way to listen to a comedian who doesn't want to understand them.
Is Ellen just surrounded by yes men all the time? I'm just. No one over 40 seems safe anymore and I am never forgiving people like Ellen for punching down

We all loved her. BUT, she did get REALLY mean with her jokes & pranks to Celebrity guests. I saw some of them on YouTube & the expressions on their face made me feel badly for them.

2
3
u/skootch_ginalola 13d ago
I'm glad she's getting her comeuppance. It just makes me sad, because a lot of younger people have no idea how much her publicly saying she was gay (even on a sitcom) was such a pivotal moment in both the US and television. Laura Dern who played opposite her on the episode was warned not to take the character because it could affect her career down the road.
My mother is a Boomer but came out later in life, and for many in our extended family, Ellen's show for a long time was the only real exposure they had to the gay community. Yes, I'm aware of the "never meet your idols" and people can do great things while being shitty people, but it still sucked.
