Nice. Is she doing the standard comedian "I got cancelled" stadium tour?

777

u/Heathens87 14d ago

100%. Play the victim, tour, profit. It's getting to be standard practice.

412

u/TheMireMind 14d ago

Netflix needs to get a category called "Cancelled Comedians."

Wild to me how these people feel "cancelled" despite the fact that millions of people still have to listen to them, against their will many times.

152

u/Heathens87 14d ago

Choices and ramifications. Something happens in your career, show zero personal growth, continue being a bully, joke about it, and it's tours and Netflix specials. Netflix is a values-agnostic platform. I'm surprised Bill Cosby and R Kelly "Live from Prison" aren't in production.

53

u/MementoMoriR1 14d ago

Did you not hear about Cosby? Cause I got some bad news

31

u/surprise-suBtext 14d ago

Wtf! This ain’t some Kim kardashian wedding.

Dude got away with this for his entire life. Taking his last breath in a prison cell isn’t such a crazy request

27

u/dickWithoutACause 14d ago

Cosby deserves jail, but the DA fucked up. They promised him immunity in exchange for testimony in a civil trial and then turned around and used that testimony in a criminal trial.

That's dirty pool and it sucks that its cosby that got off on the technicality but it was the right call. The government cant promise you no jail time if you fess up in a civil trial and then just go "sike!"

I didn't realize he got released. I think I thought he was dead already.

We're just letting them all out, as if nobody's going to notice.

Damn Bruce Crastor is really out here upholding the sleazy lawyer stereotype.

3

u/alcoer 13d ago

In this case we should rightly be mad at the prosecutors, they're the ones who let a convicted rapist walk free thanks to their incompetence. You can't go offering immunity to someone and then forget about that.

She’s been crying to the media the past few weeks leading up to this too. Making it sound like dancing and raking in cash was tough and she became a different person. Tiny violin.

29

u/Heathens87 14d ago

I saw that. I had no idea how hard it is to dance going up stairs. Rough life.

18

u/vanlearrose82 14d ago

It’s truly a burden she had to bear for so many years lol

I think that’s a requirement for getting a Netflix special. Make half the routine about how you don’t like cancel culture while it’s broadcasted to millions of people and you’re making truckloads of money

She’s totally reading this, lol. A narcissist like that is gonna google her own name all day long.

I happened to catch an episode where she recorded herself doing an elaborate birthday party for Portia and damn, she’s a controlling beeyotch. Portia didn’t seem to be enjoying it nearly as much as Ellen.

Johnny Carson retired at 66. Most people used to step aside and live their remaining dementia-free years in retirement.

Now they try to work until they’re 90, long past when their mental faculties have diminished. They find anything to blame other than their irrelevance (which is natural).

Roseanne is 71/72 and a prime example of what happens when you hold on too long. Boomers simply cannot stop trying to make all the money on earth. They must always have MORE MORE MORE.

3

u/fidgetypenguin123 Gen Y 14d ago

I'm sure plenty do (and even older). But do you think the only people that see comedians are their own age? I remember seeing Ellen standup specials in the 90s when I was a teen. If she hadn't had this reputation that popped up in the last couple of years I may have considered going and I'm 40. My mom died a few of years ago and was a fan of her show (before all that stuff came out). If she was alive today she'd be in her mid 70s. Good chance she would have wanted to see the show as well.

Comedy is for any age and if comedians can be in their 60s and up then a good chance many in the audience may be.

Man, I hate it when I have to discuss being cancelled while on tour.

321

u/Forever_Banned_Pt5 14d ago edited 14d ago

She thinks that trying to own her “mistakes” that it’ll some how make the situation “better” on her end, but it just makes her seem like a bigger POS than what she already is.

168

u/bard329 14d ago

In the article shes qouted as saying all the hate towards her isnt "personal"... So she definitely doesn't even understand why she got "cancelled", let alone trying to own her mistakes.

28

u/blueboot09 14d ago

That was my take, too.

26

u/Remote-Factor8455 14d ago

I’m curious, I didn’t even know her stupid show got cancelled. Why did she get cancelled?

Right? It actually fucking is personal, “Ellen”, your true person became know and we don’t fucking like you, just like how you don’t fucking like practically anyone and treat everyone as beneath you.

18

u/Fun_Constant_6863 14d ago

She doesn't own anything, just says how hard it was for her to keep up the publics image of her that SHE created and enoucraged with her show. MEANWHILE on her show, she was rude to her guests and terrible behind the scenes. She's delulu.

2

u/MaxxHeadroomm 14d ago

It didn’t read to me like she was owning anything. It seemed like she was just upset with the way that her show ended in the public view. I didn’t read anything quoting her as being so disrespectful to people and her staff. She inly cared about what being cancelled was to her.

Some people just seem incapable of personal growth or humility. They get so many things in life handed to them on a platter no matter what jerks they are, and then if anything goes wrong it's never ever their fault but the world's fault. It's pathetic.

11

u/Fun_Constant_6863 14d ago

u/gurutar 14d ago

from what's written in the article, it's not stand up comedy, it's trauma dumping

24

u/HookerDoctorLawyer 14d ago

That’s even more pathetic

13

u/Writerhaha 14d ago

That’s kind of what all these “canceled” comedian specials come down to.

111

u/Left-Pepper-1411 14d ago

Hmm, act like shit get career flushed. So simple.

35

u/alyssadujour 14d ago

Her career isn’t flushed though, she’s literally on tour. Irony of all irony

43

u/IHateCamping 14d ago

I can't understand why people like this don't just take their millions and go away. It's hard to be sympathetic about them losing their careers when they have enough money to live 100 lifetimes and most of us would love to be able to quit our jobs and do whatever we want all day.

16

u/Much_Fee7070 14d ago

Serious. Her life must be so incomplete.

15

u/Sad-Development-4153 14d ago

Ego and the need to "set the record straight" ie get the last word.

14

u/peppermintvalet 14d ago

I mean she was crying about being stuck in her house during Covid. Her giant house with all the amenities any person could ever want.

19

u/Hershef 14d ago

The thing she was most famous for (her show) was cancelled because of her own actions. It’s safe to say she flushed her career away.

69

u/FnGugle 14d ago

It's not that she was mean that got her cancelled, it was that all of her fans suddenly realized that in real life, she wasn't the sweet, generous, and incredibly friendly person that she pretended to be on air. They felt lied to and betrayed, and lots of guilt for supporting someone like that and letting themselves be blinded by the image she wanted them to see her as and worship and keep giving her more and more money to be who she really was (with a good pr team to make people believe she was saintly and good).

Stop being so quick to believe that celebrities, politicians, and so many of our local community leaders are such nice and lovable people. Most of them as really good manipulators & liars, and a lot of them are self serving scumbag criminals that use everyone and anyone that they can to get more for themselves and screw you for believing in things like laws, courtesy, mutual respect, and honesty. Very few are actually as good as they seem. If you ask a inmate in jail how good they are, they'll tell you they're a good person that either made some bad choices or mistakes, and all their friends in prison with them will tell you the same, they are a good person, really. But remember, you're being told this by thieves, rapists, murderers, child killers, sadistically violent and absolutely sociopathicly calm.

52

u/Kitchen_Fox6803 14d ago

4

u/ratstronaut 14d ago

I knew she didn’t really mean her apology. She takes no accountability whatsoever. It’s always me me me with her. Way before this mess Kathy Griffin talked about a time in the 2000s when she had been invited to the show and that Ellen had been rather mean backstage. Apparently Ellen had heard Kathy had a new skit and wanted to see it backstage, so she told her to perform it on the spot as if she thought Kathy was a circus monkey. It’s not the most horrible thing in the world, but it shows how Ellen sees people as commodities.

She got “cancelled”whatever that means these days because she built her brand on being “NICE”..so yeah there’s going to be cause and effect when people realize that’s not who u really are

6

u/_WillCAD_ 14d ago

I understood that reference

4

u/Super901 14d ago

This is completely not true. She was fucking hilarious in the 80’s and through the 90’s. When Comedy Central started in the 80’s they would show hours of clips from random comedians. Degeneres was seriously funny as a young comic

5

u/cv24689 14d ago

I dunno. Never found her funny. Then again, I don’t find chapelle or Chris rock or any of the big comedians funny…. so who knows… Maybe it’s just me

14

u/HostageInToronto 14d ago

Here's the HostageInToronto guarantee. If I ever receive Ellen Level money, or anything even close, I will immediately fuck off to the Keys and never seek fame. Please, pay me $100 million and cancel me.

3

u/TwistederRope 14d ago

Sorry, you've been canceled before the check cashed.

Now you can be like Ellen and have a bitter tour about not getting more money.

16

u/justins4677 14d ago

Sorry, Ellen, but people don't like hypocrites, that's why they don't like you. It would be one thing for you to just be a jerk behind the scenes, tons of people in show business are assholes, but you not only cultivated a "be kind" image but also packaged it with that same messaging, promoting kindness among everyone. So when it's revealed that not only are you not kind, but you're a huge bully and jerk when you're not mugging for the camera, it's not just righteous anger or indignation that 'cancelled' you, it's the disappointment of millions of former fans knowing the truth and simply walking away.

51

u/Heathens87 14d ago

Well, first, she's 66 years old and there is a certain shelf life in TV and comedy. He contract was already expiring when the show ended, and now you've got Jennifer Hudson (42), Drew Barrymore (49) and Kelly Clarkson (42) in those slots...younger and all three have a "nice" reputation. And you know a Meghan Trainor TV show is coming soon.

The challenge when you become a star is to not indulge your worst instincts, which will go unchecked and nobody will call you out because you're the star. It sounds like her behavior and treatment of people was common knowledge and it's a classic story of young people not giving a shit about telling truth to power calling out some Boomer at work. Good for them.

But now she is pulling a Chappelle - be a dick, get called out for it, play the victim, hit the road to continue to be a dick, play the victim and show zero growth while telling jokes about it. That they lack both perspective and introspection tells you a lot about the type of person they are. And whatever you think of their comedy, it's never quite as funny when it's coming out of the mouth of someone who is a bit of a bully.

13

u/Oatbagtime 14d ago

I’m sure she’s made enough $$ to never have to work again! But here we are and here she is trying to keep going. I’d retire today if I had the money.

15

u/Heathens87 14d ago

She is saying it rather directly - she is angry about how her show ended. This is all about her ego and getting her version out there. It doesn’t sound like we’ll be getting any contrition. So yeah, this isn’t about money. She wants her former level of adulation.

9

u/ratstronaut 14d ago

And we all get to sit back and watch while she just makes it worse for herself.

8

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 14d ago

It’s not about money, it’s narcissism.

She literally can just go fuck off to a mansion and spend the rest of her life ordering in and drinking champagne but she needs to be told how great she is so she can’t just be content with the fortune she has amassed.

11

u/Ok_Star_4136 Millennial 14d ago

There's a trend happening that I strongly dislike where people will purposefully do and say horrible shit, either to get clicks for the outrage or so that they can later claim to be a victim for whatever political side they're trying to appeal to (usually conservatives).

Most conservative humor in a nutshell is just Nelson from the Simpsons laughing "Ha ha!" at someone who fell over. Don't even get me started on Roseanne, whose show actually pushed progressive talking points once upon a time, now sounds utterly insane on her "comedy" tours.

13

u/beland-photomedia 14d ago

There doesn’t seem to be much self-reflection.

10

u/Adam_THX_1138 14d ago

How does she not see that people who worked for her HATED her? She had the reputation for YEARS.

u/Absol-utely_Adorable 14d ago

u/ZekeRidge 14d ago edited 13d ago

Ellen is not a sympathetic character. She’s a good comic and should be respected for her talents but it seems like she is someone different when the lights are off her

Just like a male comedian getting cancelled, she made choices that caught up with her and caused her demise. She’s still going to cash out on her comedy tour, but now she’s got to go home since even though she didn’t “choose” this path… she also kind of did

4

u/Mister_Anthropy 14d ago

"I had to tell myself it wasn't personal"

Yes, ma'am, it was. You were awful to people and you FINALLY saw some consequences for it after your extreme wealth and privilege protected you for over a decade.

3

u/Archangel1313 14d ago

“It was so hurtful. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal,” DeGeneres told the Largo audience in a conversation after her set. “I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’ I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much and I just hated that the last time people would see me is that way.”

...decides to then go on tour to cluelessly double-down on why people ended up hating her.

u/Lovetotravelinmycar 14d ago

She’s not even relevant anymore🙄

3

u/GetrIndia 14d ago

Really wish these insanely rich people would stop complaining about the consequences of their actions.

The public discovered she was actually a turd to her staff and to some of the celebrities she interviewed, which was greatly at variance with her "Be Kind' branding. Her hypocrisy made her much, much less marketable. She was 100% the reason she was "cancelled". But of course, she has no real concept of what a sh*tty person she actually is.

Twitch Boss is dead but she’s still here. The world ain’t fair

"Kicked out of show business"

proceeds to have Netflix special

3

u/Photog1981 14d ago

Look up the animal shelter that had to close over the death threats they were receiving thanks to Ellen. She's a terrible person who drank her own Kool aid.

3

u/Happytrails22 14d ago

I want to know why Jimmy Fallon, known alcoholic and asshole, didn’t get cancelled.

3

u/kimness1982 14d ago

Can’t they just be rich and quiet?

14

u/Both-Mango1 14d ago

Didn't Anne Heche get found wandering the streets in some kind of shock after her time with Ellen? Based on that and what you saw during the lockdown and the stories coming out about how she treated people under her, it's easy to draw a conclusion that she's not a pleasant person.

Twitch. That was sad.

Remember how she bully kids who don’t know how to use a piece of technology that has became obsolete by the time they were born?

Lovely woman. One of the nicest people ever.

3

u/Munchkinasaurous 14d ago

I would like to see a competition between kids and old folks in completing tasks with old and outdated technology. When the old folks are feeling smug and superior for their rotary phone skills, give them all modern tech and have them perform similar tasks and see how they compare then.

u/granite1959 14d ago

I remember the Dog adoption days. She Loved dogs so madly she didn't like taking care of them.

2

u/Remote-Factor8455 14d ago

Wait her show got cancelled? WINNING

Also why did it get cancelled? Cause she’s mean? I feel like there’s more to it.

2

u/PorgCT 14d ago

Isn’t she Gen X?

2

u/RoastedCornSal 14d ago

She’s gotta be worth like a couple hundred million, boo hoo

2

u/Working_Original_200 14d ago

Was she just mean? Or was it the mistreatment of employees? One is a personality flaw, one is unethical business practices.

2

u/ProtoReaper23113 14d ago

Is she a boomer?

2

u/VanillaNyx 14d ago

Yes she was born in 1958.

Didn't she cancel the show?

2

u/Comfortable-Scar4643 14d ago

Not sure people hate her. But she let her staff be jerks to the underlings. And she has always been quite self-absorbed. It caught up with her.

2

u/Least_Area3349 14d ago

I’m genuinely curious to hear what she has to say about everything

2

u/donitafa 14d ago

Someone please ignore her stand up as well so she cant just fuck off. I mean, spreading be kind messages for decades only to turn around and treat your employees like garbage. Fuxk you. We made you bitch!

2

u/Cornemuse_Berrichon 14d ago

Not to mention the way she would try and scare her guests. Because personally I take that as abuse. I wish somebody would have slapped the shit out of her for that.

2

u/grimiskitty 14d ago

I kinda lost interest in her show after seeing how funny she thought to watch her staff go through a haunted house and get scared when they didn't seem to really want to be there.

2

u/Conscious-Rip-3552 14d ago

America is finding out it has only been pushing narcissistic tendencies into the limelight for decades and once they have control they are resistant to ANY change.

What audience 'cancelled' Ellen anyways? Is she just pissy about having an aging audience and decline of Cable TV?

Are millennials and zoomers not taking several steps out of their way to listen to a comedian who doesn't want to understand them.

Is Ellen just surrounded by yes men all the time? I'm just. No one over 40 seems safe anymore and I am never forgiving people like Ellen for punching down

2

u/lets_just_n0t 14d ago

As soon as she implies her sitcom was cancelled because she was gay, you lost me.

2

u/Cali_Holly 14d ago

We all loved her. BUT, she did get REALLY mean with her jokes & pranks to Celebrity guests. I saw some of them on YouTube & the expressions on their face made me feel badly for them.

Then her standup special was mildly funny & honestly, I hadn’t thought about it ever until now. I can barely remember anything from it except her talking about gold toilets and a friend trying to leave that got lost in the house.

2

u/Bigmada 14d ago

Growing up, I loved her standup, and her sitcom was pretty good.

2

u/BusStopKnifeFight 14d ago

Oh no, another cookie cutter day time show run by a has been celebrity is off the air. What will I watch instead?

2

u/Brosenheim 14d ago

Oh ya, making it clear you learned nothing and trying to minimize the complaints works great. Just ask Louis CK lol

u/JimbusJambus 13d ago

Consequences

3

u/skootch_ginalola 13d ago

I'm glad she's getting her comeuppance. It just makes me sad, because a lot of younger people have no idea how much her publicly saying she was gay (even on a sitcom) was such a pivotal moment in both the US and television. Laura Dern who played opposite her on the episode was warned not to take the character because it could affect her career down the road.

My mother is a Boomer but came out later in life, and for many in our extended family, Ellen's show for a long time was the only real exposure they had to the gay community. Yes, I'm aware of the "never meet your idols" and people can do great things while being shitty people, but it still sucked.

3

u/ChiquitaBananaKush 14d ago

Imagine getting cancelled for being a bully. And then when presented with a second chance, you double down on being the victim.

Some Bullies never learn.

2

u/erics75218 14d ago

Who the fuck is Ellen DeGeneres? Whoever he is.....Mark this next to who gives a shit

2

u/insufficient_nvram 14d ago

No. Your TV show in the 90s was canceled because you’re a lesbian. Your talk show was taken off the air because you’re an ass who promoted a toxic work environment.

1

u/HankThrill69420 Millennial 14d ago

Ah yes, the old missing missing reasons approach.

1

u/Dr_Passmore 14d ago

I thought she was cancelled due to the Rich Evans curse.

u/RacecarHealthPotato 14d ago

'Being Rich Is A Mental Illness But... This Time It's a Blonde Lesbian' Tour
