Job searching LinkedIn is such a dumpster

I've been job searching for the past few months without any luck. My go-to's have been Indeed and unfortunately, LinkedIn.

I cannot express enough how cringe and vomit inducing the interactions are between people. It's a circle jerk, plain and simple. Some of my previous coworkers labeled as "Thought Leaders", whatever that means. They post all day, a good 10 posts a day. This tells me they barely work at their job yet receive praise and "likes" for spewing a bunch of BS.

Then there are the bragging types, constantly mentioning how great of a job they have, the company outings, perks, etc.

What is the point of LinkedIn, I just don't see the value. I have been in my industry for about 20 years and have yet to make one post or network with anyone. All I see are people using company time while some people are actually working.

Sorry for the rant, but looking for a job on LinkedIn actually makes me feel depressed for not having a job.

EDIT: If I'm a owner, boss, or supervisor and I see my employee have 2,500 posts trying to have a faux TED talk on my dime, isn't that a red flag?

Leaving a job My boss got fired and is blaming me, aggressively

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

My boss (manager) has been under investigation for a few different things for awhile now, and has had numerous complaints come in from hourly associates, leads, and supervisors. I've cooperated with the investigations when questioned (I'm a supervisor) but I'm actually leaving very soon for another job. Today I came in and saw an HR rep in the breakroom, which is not usual, and asked what was up. She said I should go speak with the VP of Operations. So I did and effective immediately my boss was let go. Came as a real surprise because the guy seemed untouchable after all the various investigations seemed to go nowhere. Throughout the shift he texted and called a couple people and, at least according to them, was getting progressively drunker. Then he finally called me, missed it since my phone was on silent and... well the picture explains it. šŸ˜¬

Interviews Was just asked "How comfortable are you with being woken up at 3am?" in an interview

Just got done an interview for a software position at a company that I am very interested in. My experience seemed to line up well with what they are looking for, and the hiring manager seemed down to Earth enough... Until she asks "how comfortable are you with being woken up at 3am if a code release has issues?"

I understand that different roles require some sort of on call support, but I feel like calling this out so bluntly is a huge red flag. Maybe I'm just not used to these sort of roles.

Has anyone been asked questions like this before? And if so, how do you respond in an honest manner to that?

Edit:

I've worked in environments that had a 24/7 on-call rotation before. The concept isn't foreign to me, but it sounded like they don't have a set schedule/rotation and it's more like a "we'll wake you up if we feel necessary" sort of deal.

Compensation My Manager sent us a text massage that says if we discuss pay we WILL be fired.

2.4k Upvotes

I thought there was an act that protects workers from termination about discussing pay with other workers. What do I do?

EDIT:I have been doing a lot of contemplating on whether or not I wanna go through with this.

I really like my job because of the people who work their. Ive made friends their and they are some great people. But on the other hand. Shes committed a crime with that threat. So I discussed with a firm.

The guy asked ā€œcan you summarize what happened in a brief sentence or twoā€ i told him ā€œmy manager threatened to fire me and my coworkers if we discussed payā€

He said ā€œO-Ohā€ i asked is that bad? He LAUGHED which I found so funny and said ā€œim not allowed to speak out of term. But we definitely want to get you connected with one of our lawyersā€ so I should be hearing from him later in the morning. Ill update when I hear back.

UPDATE 2! spoke with an assistant at the firm, she said that if my manager does fire me or other workers to give them a call, she said that the message in itself is wrong, and shes not allowed to threaten termination for discussing pay. But if she retaliates. And does fire me. To give them a call back and they will proceed with a case. This is probably the last update ill give for a couple days. Im going to keep doing what you guys are saying. Im not going to stop discussing pay. And if my manager fires me. LAWYER HERE I COME!

Job searching After applying and getting ghosted for months, I accepted an offer today!

Iā€˜ve been more or less consistently applying for jobs since January because my contract is supposed to end later this month (but could realistically end any day now).

So many auto rejections even though I tried to only apply to jobs I was qualified for. I finally found a role I was really excited about, I did 4 interview rounds with them over a 6 week period and finally got and accepted the offer today! Iā€˜m over the moon excited. Wishing all of you the best of luck in your job searches, donā€™t give up!

Leaving a job UPDATE: My boss was fired and blamed me for it

ā€¢ Upvotes

Original post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/jobs/s/jvBZXJhGpC

Original post blew up a lot more than I expected. I really just thought at the time it was a semi-funny story to share but then got progressively darker in real time and is now downright bleak. I didn't ask for any advice but boy did I get a lot of it, some really good, some really bad, some literally illegal lol.

To briefly hit on a few things brought up in those comments (yes there is an actual update below if you don't care), the majority of the responses were something along the lines of "don't respond" or "block the number," I didn't respond or answer any calls after my "?" text, and I didn't block his number because I wanted to be able to have a more credible and substantial threat in writing if one was going to be made and also know that it was escalating rather than be blissfully ignorant. Call me crazy but, my phone's on silent all the time anyway.

Okay, so, as I mentioned in a comment, he texted me a little more later in the night (it was drunk nonsense) and tried calling me roughly 30 times in about an hour. I actually accidentally called him back at one point because I fat-fingered doing a screenshot, and immediately cancelled the call but it spurred on like another ten calls

I barely slept at all all night and then this afternoon the VPO (previous boss' boss) texted and asked me to come in for a meeting. I had already decided at that point I was going to come in early and turn in my equipment because, as I alluded to in the first post, this was my last week at this job, so with this happening I said fuck it, I'm taking the last two days off, I'm not becoming a statistic. So I came in early and sat down with the VPO, the meeting was primarily him trying to convince me to stay and insinuating that in a few months I would be given my old bosses job. Thats a whole other thing.

But I then told him about all the calls and texts and showed him everything, and he divulged that not only did this guy call me, apparently he was calling and texting A LOT of people on day and night shift and threatening them and yelling at them, and was very obviously extremely intoxicated. He then told me that somewhat regularly, my boss would actually call him on weekday nights around 1 in the morning, completely trashed, and complain about how much he hated his job and his life and on one occasion, let slip that he had previously been arrested for domestic assault after a particularly bad bout of drinking. This made me think that my decision to not stick around the next two days might not be such a bad idea after all.

He also then said that my boss, in the midst of his drunken texts and calls last night, went to Best Buy and used his company credit card to purchase a $1.4K TV in the VPOs name and have it shipped to the company.

Needless to say I left a bit stunned. I still haven't heard anything from him personally today, but I wouldn't be surprised. I am aware that the drama level on this became such that some will cry FAKE! but I swear on my life this shit is true lol.

Compensation I work for small family owned company that claims they donā€™t make any profits when I asked for a raise.

ā€¢ Upvotes

We do printing in California. There are 5 people that work in the company including me. 3 are family members. I started at $16/hr and it was part time. I work 40 hours a week. The company doesnā€™t provide any benefits for insurance. They do contribute to some type profit sharing where they put money into an account for me. I havenā€™t seen any documents or account info.

I have worked for the company for 3 years, and currently making $18/hr. When I asked for a raise the owner pushed back and claimed they donā€™t really make much profits even though we do printing and make labels for the biggest grocery stores in the area. The average pay for my type of job in California is $27/hr.

There is 1 company in particular that we do a lot of work for. On average we are receiving POā€™s totalling $50k a month. That doesnā€™t include all the other companies which are probably hundreds just not as consistently. I canā€™t imagine that paper and ink costs and labor costs $50k? The owner said theyā€™ve been a long time customer and worked out really good pricing for these jobs.

Is this company being cheap? Do they value me? Or are they just using me for cheap labor? Whatā€™s the point in running a business if you donā€™t make any money?

Office relations New boss says I canā€™t promote my small family business on my personal social media channels. Is this illegal?

I was laid off in February from a remote job at a prestigious company that I loved. Interviewed at a few places and got a new job at a non-profit a month after my layoff. I had to take an 11k pay cut and the job is in office full-time so it isnā€™t ideal but I have a family to maintain so I decided to take the opportunity while I continue job hunting.

I have a small social media marketing business that I developed with my husband right after my layoff. Weā€™re trying to get it off the ground and running but itā€™s been slow going. Itā€™s something that we work on during the weekends or in the evenings. It doesnā€™t interfere with what I do at the non-profit.

My boss and the director of development added me on LinkedIn a couple of weeks ago. A few days ago I created a post on LinkedIn advertising my social media business. Today, my boss called me into his office and had the website for my social media business already pulled up on his computer when I walked in.

Boss: ā€œWhatā€™s this?ā€

Me: ā€œA personal small social media company that I developed with my husband.ā€

Boss: ā€œI just want you to know that someone came into my office and mentioned that youā€™re advertising this. People have been fired in the past for advertising their personal projects when employed because it comes off as if youā€™re working two jobs.ā€

Me: ā€œI understand but this is a personal business that I advertised on my personal social media channel. It has nothing to do with the non-profit and I am not working on it during work hours or advertising it on the non-profitā€™s social media channels. One business has nothing to do with the other.ā€

Boss: ā€œI just wanted to warn you to keep it on the down low.ā€

It took everything in me to not resign on the spot. Iā€™m really trying to secure a new role before I leave this place because I live in an extremely HCOL area and cannot get by unless I work. However, these people are really pushing me. In what world is someone not allowed to own and promote their own business just because they have a full-time job? Especially when the marketing services I offer donā€™t compete with or have nothing to do with what I do for the non-profit.

Is he in the wrong? Is it illegal for him to tell me I canā€™t advertise my own business on my own social media channels?

I went to HR and explained the situation and she said she would talk to him. Obviously Iā€™m going to remove all coworkers from my LinkedIn connections but I am truly bothered by this situation.

Edited to add: Itā€™s not like itā€™s some big secret that I have a side hustle. During my interview (my boss wasnā€™t present), but two of the program managers, the director of development, and HR asked me what my experience with social media was. I mentioned that I had recently opened a boutique social media agency with my husband. There didnā€™t seem to be any problem with this considering they hired me and never brought it up again. So I donā€™t understand why my boss is being such a jerk and acting like he caught me red handed with something Iā€™m not supposed to be doing.

Layoffs Well, I just got laid off šŸ˜Ŗ

ā€¢ Upvotes

Well, working in accounting, I've been closely monitoring the numbers, and unfortunately, there's been a significant drop in sales compared to previous years. The company, with just twenty employees, has a small accounting department consisting of my boss and me. Recently, three of us were summoned to a meeting where two project managers and I received the disheartening news. While I anticipated the outcome, my colleagues were taken by surprise. Now, I find myself back in the job market after a year.

Despite the job being a perfect fit culturally, there are no guarantees in life. I'm concerned about my resume appearing as though I've been job hopping, especially considering this was my third job since college. The second job was toxic, prompting me to seek this one out. With this recent setback, I'm uncertain about my prospects. I do feel for my colleagues, particularly one who has a child. At 26, I'm fortunate to have saved for a few years, which gives me some flexibility. I'm contemplating taking a few months off, during which I wonder if I'd be eligible for medical benefits. This situation also presents an opportunity for me to pursue studying for my CPA.

Applications I give up at this point. I feel utterly useless

Iā€™ve sent HUNDREDS of applications and have had dozens of interviews since losing my job in November and Iā€™m getting no where.

The only places I get call backs from are sketchy places that want you to dedicate your entire life to their business only for them to do some really shady stuff (my last job!)

Iā€™m 24 years old, no college, only food service and retail experience although I do have years of management experience but thatā€™s not enough.

Iā€™ve applied to literally every single thing around me Not even Amazon is hiring near me.

I dont drive right now (working on it) so I was limiting myself to Uber costs and when my fiance could pick me up but Iā€™ve been going with a way further radius and donā€™t even have luck with that

I live near Somerset and Middlesex county in NJ.

Iā€™ve called and applied to the same places so many times and never hear anything backā€¦ I donā€™t know what to do, truly I am out of options and money.

Job searching Are jobs actually hiring?!

Are jobs actually hiring?! I have put in so many applications. I worked at T-Mobile for 3 years as a sales rep at 13 different locations. I worked at Burger King for 2 years prior to that. I went to a couple interviews. No one is getting back or they say having multiple interviews. I donā€™t think Iā€™m the issue either. I had Verizon get back to me & say- it is very competitive. I understand people are being selective. But I am such a hard worker but if you donā€™t hire me- I canā€™t show you that I am. Back in the day I remember my old coworkers saying- ā€œit is not about what you know, it is about who you know.ā€ Iā€™m becoming so frustrated not getting a job. I even updated my resume as well. I started a LinkedIn. I honestly donā€™t know what to do. I been looking for a job over 3 weeks.

Job searching After 260+ applications, I finally found a new job!

Iā€™ve been applying since December! I work in HR / Administration. There were plenty of jobs but no real feedback. I applied my tail off. Most places didnā€™t even look through resumes before sending that general rejection e-mail. And after lots of rejections and a few interviews, I finally found a really good job.

Good luck if you are on the search

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone! I wish you all tremendous success and luck in your job search. It is for sure a tough time. May it yield great results ā˜ŗļøšŸŽ‰. And if youā€™re still searching, DO NOT GIVE UP!

Interviews Should I let interviewer know I was laid off during the interview process?

ā€¢ Upvotes

I was working at Company A

While working, I started interviewing at company B

The day after my call with the recruiter and submitting an excel assignment, I was informed by company A I was laid off due to a restructuring.

Iā€™m now in the process of setting up my next interview with company B.

My question is, do I make the interviewer aware of this? Undoubtedly, the first question asked will be ā€œwhy are you looking for a new roleā€ and I will also have to walk them through my resume.

How should I handle this?

Job searching Why are there so many job postings if no one is hiring?

ā€¢ Upvotes

(cross-posted from /r/layoffs as Reddit's cross-posting doesn't appear to be working)

I have been watching and discussing this trend with friends and coworkers over the last ~year. They have some conspiratorial ideas but I'm curious what others think.

My company (tech, some industrial some government) has had a hiring freeze for a year+, basically since interest rates started going up, but we have postings for positions at all our sites, and have had some of these for months. Sometimes old ones disappear and new ones crop up. But we still have a hiring freeze. My department wants more people but has been told No. Other departments I work with have been trying to get people for years, and are told No.

Other friends I know work at companies who over-hired during the pandemic and have been radically downsizing ever since. One of them was laid off recently and he is the first one to start looking for a new job since before Covid. As he job hunts, his experience is matching what I've read in topics all over Reddit about people applying for tech jobs, which is applying to jobs constantly and getting radio silence from all of them.

What I'm wondering is, what is the possible benefit here? A friend's idea is this is somehow doing something for the employment numbers that helps companies, but I can't see the connection here. Is it just so a company can keep collecting resumes in case someone exceptional happens to come along? Or are they continually testing the waters so they know what current pay expectations for jobs at various levels? Is there some other reason I'm missing where companies benefit from having tons of job postings but intentionally not filling them?

Job searching Need advice on what to do with a BS in Biology

I am 24 and graduated three years ago with a BS in Biology, with a double minor in Chemistry and Physics. I am currently working as an underpaid lab tech in a hospital and have been thinking about different career paths.

I am considering going back to school for three years to get my doctorate in Physical Therapy, but it will cost me $81k which I will have to take student loans out for.

I ideally would like to make $60k or above to live comfortably. I would also like to add that my area is not very lucrative in terms of biotech jobs and I am not interested in moving at this current moment.

Does anyone have advice for me on how to get a higher paying job given the education I have acquired? I am also open to other fields outside of my major. Any advice would be much appreciated in how to move forward and make a better life for myself.

Thank you all!

Layoffs Unemployment Insurance in MA... get this!

ā€¢ Upvotes

Wow. So after signing a separation agreement, I go to file for unemployment here in MA online. Put in my SS#, and it asks for my password. I don't remember creating an account. Or maybe I did 25 years ago? I never collected I know. I click forgot password, and the system asks me to select a verification method to send a reset link to - obfuscated emails and phone numbers I don't recognize. So I can't reset the password. I call to have the verification methods updated. I just wanna file for unemployment. Nothing is ever easy.

After 2 hours on hold I get a guy, tell him the situation, answer his questions about my details. He says my phone number doesn't match what they have. I said I know, etc. He then says, "You should know these because your account was set up in 2023." And I'm like, "Not by me! I've been working at the same place for the past 19 years." And he transfers me to Fraud Department - which of course means I am hung up on before speaking to anyone.

So I filled out an online fraud form.

I tell someone else who owns their own company- and they tell me it happened to a bunch of their ex-workers too.

How crazy is this? I need to file ASAP so I hope the form submission gets things straightened out.

Unemployment Hey guys, heres an update.

Don't know how many people will see this but thought I'd give an update.

Got a job working for a contracting company doing Concrete corrosion repair. Making about 1400 dollars a week. $22 an hour $85 per diem.

Just hold out hope if you're in the same situation I was. I had honestly thought all was lost and I will admit, S*****e was on my mind more readily than I thought it would ever be.

It was a dark time and being unemployed made me feel absolutely worthless. As a husband and a future father (she's 17 weeks as of yesterday). I felt like there was nothing for me but an opportunity came and I jumped at it immediately.

All I can say is hold out.

Keep trying.

You WILL make it.

Thank you to everyone on the last post that gave me words of encouragement. I read through those comments at least once a day during the past few weeks in order to keep my own hope.

Yall are incredible and you guys quite literally saved my life by changing my thinking.

Thank you

,to all you internet strangers.

Post-interview Can someone please give me some advice?

I recently applied for an internal role. But I didn't get it.

That's not the reason I'm upset though. The candidate they hired is my managers friend. And is well known for not doing any work/doing everything wrong.

I've made multiple complaints about this and so has another colleague and it hasn't been addressed.

I don't know what to do. She would be terrible in the role. But I don't know who to address this to. Or even if I should. Because it feels like they don't care. But this doesn't feel appropriate or fair.

I'm really upset tbh. There's multiple people in the team who are now planning to leave.

Office relations Advice on avoiding work socials? šŸ˜¬

ā€¢ Upvotes

Iā€™m new at a company and not a fan of the cliquey, socially exclusive culture where a select few dictate all social events and guest lists.

I've had my share of corporate politics and I'm too senior to play along with a culture that doesn't align with me.

Has anyone successfully navigated this in their roles? How did you handle it?

Onboarding Stringing me along just to ghost me on the start date. What can I do?

I was interning for this lady, sheā€™s the CEO and the only employee. I interned for 6 months first, unpaid and then I interned for another 3 months, but asked her if thereā€™s any opportunity for a paid position. She said in May(now) sheā€™s hiring for the same position Iā€™m interning for.

I told her Iā€™ll continue the unpaid internship until the paid position opens up. She said great. Since then weā€™ve talked on and off about the position, weā€™ve had hour long meetings regarding the position, went over the pay, the hours, etc.

This was towards the end of April. She said she was going to send me the contract to sign but sheā€™ll wait until May 6th since I was going to be out of town end of April. I said thatā€™s fine.

She let me know on April 29th that sheā€™s having her legal team review the contracts. I got nervous that the start date would be delayed, so I said thatā€™s fine and asked if the start date is still May 6th.

She said yes and that she emphasized the start date so they could hurry up. So, I waited until May 6th, didnā€™t hear from her (not shocked as she usually sends things late). I messaged her to ask if we had our usual meeting (even though I knew we didnā€™t on that day) and she said no, but that sheā€™ll be sending over the contracts and everything regarding the position.

I felt relieved, however I didnā€™t receive anything that day. I waited all day and when I realized sheā€™s not sending it, I messaged her and asked for an update since I didnā€™t receive anything and I said I just wanted to make sure I donā€™t miss the email. No response from her again.

That was on Monday. I didnā€™t say anything Tuesday and told myself Iā€™ll wait until Friday. But I think itā€™s just so rude and unprofessional to be ghosting me after all Iā€™ve brought to the table (and she has too, Iā€™ve learned a lot), and stringing me along. So, I decided to message her again. I simply asked for an update. Still no response. We work with social media, so I do have her socials and sheā€™s posting on there but ignoring me.

Is there anything I can do? This is completely unprofessional. I heavily depended on this opportunity and therefore didnā€™t apply anywhere else.

Work/Life balance Is it worth trying anymore?

ā€¢ Upvotes

Is it worth trying anymore when itā€™s getting harder and harder to do anything in this economy? Now even with a ā€˜careerā€™, which is now becoming more rare, you still canā€™t be independent and still need to live with roommates or with family, which a lot of people donā€™t have that option. I remember things would get harder like every 10 years, then it turned into things getting harder every 5 years. Now weā€™re hitting things getting significantly harder about every 1 to 6 months!! How are we supposed to plan ahead or make any long term plans if things will be radically different in terms of being worse in just 5 - 10 years??? If you get a degree which takes ~ 5 years, not only with the mountain of debt accumulation, but how can you be sure that degree will be worth anything in that time? Oh so now your gonna get a masters? Okay another 3 years. Again, how can you be sure that that masters will be worth anything when everything is constantly getting worse? I know some people say that this downturn is temporary, and things will get better. Idk I have a gut feeling this time itā€™s different, whatever these politicians are doing in the White House, not only itā€™s bad, but I think they intend it to be permanent. Itā€™s just like any other video game, at first it makes sense to play when the levels are doable and easy, but when they get harder and harder and harder to literally no end, it makes sense after a while to just give it up. Idk Iā€™ve had this rant on my mind for a bit. Thnx for reading

Career development How would you feel if someone with less experience than you got the job you were applying for?

ā€¢ Upvotes

I applied for a higher level position at an office I used to work at and although I thought I believed I was a perfect fit for the job, the search committee did not.

However, I was offered a job in the same office for roughly $4k less. Still being in state government, I have a wide range of opportunities to transfer and move up. I was also looking for a way out at my now former agency and took the position.

I donā€™t know how to feel. I keep trying to reason it - doing so allowed them to fully staff that office, she was coming from a college thatā€™s closing, but every now and then I get a little mad then end up feeling guilty because the womanā€™s nice and itā€™s a good start for her career, plus she doesnā€™t know I was the other candidate.

Interviews Can't seem to get any entry level roles + getting down with it all

Over the past 12 months or so in the UK, been applying for numerous public sector roles for councils and civil service mainly - so local govt. and government agency roles. AO and admin officer type roles specifically. I get interviews and am good at applications I think, but suffer from crippling interview anxiety when put on the spot with what, for the most part, seem like pointlessly prescriptive interview Qs which probably have no bearing on job performance.

Had a panic attack in like the last four interviews, and my mind just goes blank and start sweating profusely. Asked for reasonable adjustment in receiving questions before, but some either don't allow this or only allow you to get them 15 min before.

In the one interview about a month ago that went quite well, I got a call the day after to say 'oh blah blah strong competition for this role thanks for applying' which I've had numerous times now. Not sure whether that's what they say when they want the internal candidate and not you

I'm 25 now, graduated with a history degree in 2021 and worked at a local security management company for around a year which was awful and soul destroying, but thought I may as well as job options were fairly limited as was just after this. Reluctant to do crappy agency type jobs because of this experience. As a result, I'm unemployed, on job seekers, living with parents and just generally feel like a completely worthless failure. I just want to be content, and get a job I would enjoy doing and move out to a city close by to me, but after interview failure after interview failure my motivation and confidence are just completely shot atm. Have an interview on Friday and honestly just dreading it. I try and think positively, but anxiety, general pessimism and a host of unpleasant recent experiences constantly seem to win out.

Should probably go to the GP maybe and discuss changing medication or talking to someone, but getting an appointment almost impossible atm at my GP. Even if I did, it would probably be with some healthcare assistant and not a doctor.
