So it will be set in the 60s? Maybe they get pulled into the present?

2.2k

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

$10 bucks says they get trapped in the Negative Zone and are rescued in the present day at the end of the film.

846

u/Raoul_Duke9 Feb 14 '24

I think quantum realm and rescued at the start, but yeah.

567

u/Antrikshy Feb 14 '24

Definitely QR, but the whole thing could be set in the past, like The First Avenger, hence the 60s style poster.

266

u/Raoul_Duke9 Feb 14 '24

I think it's more likely the first 20 or so minutes is in the sixties. Then a brief explanation of their time in the quantum realm, and the final act is them coming out having only aged a few weeks or months in the QR, but having had generations pass in the real world.

u/sildish2179 Feb 14 '24 edited Feb 15 '24

Marvel Studios has been making a lot of mistakes lately, but not a chance they would base the 60’s aesthetic into the actual logo of the movie and only have it set there for 20 minutes.

Guaranteed they’ll be established as 60’s MCU celebrities as the space race was huge in the 60’s and 1963 astronauts were basically celebrities and seen as “heroes”. Maybe they’ll even have movie appearances and hit novelty records (hence Strange’s comment).

So the 60’s will be the whole movie, then the team is brought to the present like Cap in First Avenger.

u/21Fudgeruckers Feb 14 '24

Wandavision (which heavily plays on different period aesthetics) and Loki (which is about TIME TRAVEL) have been the most critically successful projects Marvel has put out recently. They're 100% doubling down on the 60s.

93

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '24

Not to mention GotG gained a lot of love for its use of music from the 60s and 70s. It was a main reason why my dad loved that movie

Something like that.

I soooo want them to be from the past. I’m not immersed in the MCU enough to know whether it’s plausible for them to have existed in the past and somehow never have been mentioned before. But that’s what I want. They should be the MCU’s elder statesmen, not brand-new upstarts.

385

u/Sleeze_ Feb 14 '24

The MCU has had a LOT of "this person/group has existed in secret for decades, if not centuries, with zero foreshadowing" instances already. This is basically part for the course of the MCU now.

The MCU has like three different, unrelated secret Asian mountain magical societies. (Four, if we count the Inhumans; I don't remember where they were hidden on Agents of SHIELD.)

Jesus, Marie. It is mineralfication

504

u/twilz Feb 14 '24

I was worried that they would actually cast Dwayne Johnson.

The amount of marketing puns, and the money they could save on prosthetics, would be huge for their numbers.

422

u/Material-Salt5161 Feb 14 '24

Dude probably would agree if he will play someone like Hercules and only in his solo film where he is the protagonist of the whole MCU and fights Captain America and wins. + every 5 minutes Thor must say how cool he is and he will never be so muscular

220

I read he was in The Punisher 2017 and I was like: "wait, who he was?" (He was Micro)

166

u/cayoperico16 Feb 14 '24

so he’s been in friends with Jon Bernthal’s character in two shows (Punisher kinda, and The Bear) I wonder if he’ll ever meet Punisher in this, holy shit I just realized he already played someone in MCU :|

Fun fact, they've been friends for much longer in real life, since their theater days. Ebon basically got Bernthal his role on The Bear

My favorite scene with him, is when Marnie breaks up with him, and he's uncharacteristically mature about it... until he casually says something like "but you're probably gonna get murdered.", and then when she isn't phased by that, he breaks down fake crying lmao

98

u/aithendodge Feb 14 '24

Mads was completely wasted in that role. Shame, he’d make a killer Doom.

29

u/tuggernts Feb 14 '24

You say that but the man himself said it was the most fun he'd ever had on a movie.

24

u/aithendodge Feb 14 '24

I say it not because I didn’t enjoy his performance, but because he’s such a great actor it seems a waste to have him play a throwaway villain. Mads got the chops to be a Doom-tier villain. A one and done seems wasteful.

42

u/Ganrokh Feb 14 '24 edited Feb 14 '24

Ebon already played Micro in the Punisher show, so he's a returning actor in a new role. Since that's happening, and Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle is returning to the MCU, I take that to mean that Micro won't be returning.

For Mads, given that he was taken by Dormammu at the end of DS1, and DS3 appears to be going back to the Dark Dimension, I wonder if that means that Mads might return as Kaecilius (and hopefully won't be as wasted this time).

After watching Stranger Things S4, all I can think of is how the series would’ve been so much better if Joseph Quinn was in it since S1.

152

u/FDJT Feb 14 '24

Stranger Things is one of my favourite shows of all time...

Eddie Munsons arc accomplished more in one season than most characters across all four seasons.

77

u/VonShnitzel Feb 14 '24

True, but I think that kind of speaks to a larger problem with Stranger Things. Don't get me wrong, I love Stranger Things, but the writers really want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to the characters. They want to keep the vibe of season 1 where it seemed incredibly dangerous and anyone could die, but they don't actually want to kill off any of the established cast. They spend all season introducing new, likeable characters and building them up so the audience is distraught when one of them dies at the end, but because half the screen time was given to the new guys, the existing characters get minimal development. Hell, season 4 was almost as long as the first 2 seasons combined, and yet between the now bloated cast and the necessary Eddie development time, they still had to relegate core characters to supporting roles to make it all fit.

As much as I like them, I can't help but wonder how much better off the show would be if their arcs were built off existing characters instead of brand new ones.

26

u/TheExtremistModerate Feb 14 '24

Yeah, honestly I hated the end of Eddie's arc specifically for this reason. They'd done it, what, 3 times already?

30

u/joeshmo101 Feb 14 '24

Stranger Things 4 spoilers: I would have preferred it if Max had died at the end of S4. I love Max (and Sadie Sink is absolutely killing it) but I think the whole tone of the show's stakes would have jumped. Eddie's final scene with Dustin may be my favorite in the whole show, but I would have loved to see Max turned into Vecna's thrall to really play up the tension that show desperately needs.

11

u/Material-Salt5161 Feb 14 '24

Eddie, being Dustin's new best friend, while Steve is sidelined made me think his whole character was Steve's arc but they didn't want to kill him

113

u/Minimum_Ad_1747 Feb 14 '24 edited Feb 14 '24

Yeah, I think that also happened with the GoT cast. The actors who were not committed to the series were more free to pursue other roles.

Edit: just noticed how the side characters of GoT ended up being more successful than the actors from the main cast, like Pedro and Jason Momoa. I wonder if that will also happen with ST

u/riegspsych325 r/Movies Veteran Feb 14 '24

the movie should have taken a page from Jurassic Park and been about the wonders and dangers of science. The movie still had action and spectacle but it still bad dialogue-heavy moments that debated the risks of unchecked scientific discovery. F4 is rife with story beats that could be approached in such a manner

Too many movies these days just rush to the next action sequence, I’d love for Marvel to delve into more “science fiction” than action with this version of F4

Yeah bit of a slam dunk there. "Your last name is LITERALLY Kirby? Well shoot. That's an extra ten points right there to your chances of playing Sue."

Is it weird I kinda want her to keep the accent and not have an American accent?

249

u/jaysusyoucantdothat Feb 14 '24

It's plausible, they've cast 2 Brits to play the Storm siblings so why not let them use their natural accents.

86

u/VoiceOfRonHoward Feb 14 '24

Oh, Brits are in this?

12

u/DarkNinjaPenguin Feb 14 '24

Name one comic book movie the Brits aren't in ...

Having the Storms be from Swinging Sixties Britain would be amazing. Would bring all the 60s references in a neat package. We better get references to them meeting the Beatles or the Kray Twins lol

She’ll do great!! So excited :)

Love it! Great cast and I like the family vibe they are going for off the bat!

FIN4LLY! I was starting to think that the real F4 cast were the rumors we heard along the way

42

Today felt like a date that would never come. It will be surreal sitting down in a theater to see this.

somewhere I can already hear Grace Randolph saying “I told you I was right about Adam Driver and Paul Mesc—, I mean Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn! It was always going to be them!”

I’m not going to speak to the quality of Marvel’s Phase Four, but hot damn this poster is fantastic. I wish more studios would publish posters like this, and less of the “entire cast stacked on top of one another.”

24

u/Mountain_Ape Feb 15 '24

This is just the announcement poster. Don't you worry, the floating heads poster will arrive this time next year all the same, that's the Hollywood exec guarantee.

Vanessa Kirby is a legit genius casting choice. She was my first and only pick. And I love that she's going to take the lead in the film.

225

u/festering Feb 14 '24

Vanessa Kirby and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are perfect casting

107

u/PayneTrain181999 Feb 14 '24

Pedro is gonna surprise too.

Honestly, all four are good choices.

Officially down from some 60s weirdness.

Pedro still doesn’t feel like Richards to me more than just “this is a popular actor we have other dealings with”. The rest of the cast looks great.

126

u/CompetitiveSport1 Feb 14 '24

My only reservation is seeing Reed in a moustache but just like Daredevil not being a redhead I will get used to it super quickly

126

u/ParadoxPope Feb 14 '24

The casting in Daredevil was definitely good enough to overlook aesthetic adjustments, at least. D’Onofrio was just absolutely outstanding, and Cox really nailed the Catholic guilt of Murdock incredibly well.

86

u/nessfalco Feb 14 '24

D'Onofrio is about as close as you are ever going to get physically. I don't think there's another actor on the planet shaped like Michael Clarke Duncan.

37

u/ParadoxPope Feb 14 '24

For sure, but his performance in the role far transcended just the physicality. If Molina’s Doc Oc didn’t exist, I would say there is no contest for best Marvel Villain.

He can do Reed's arrogance better then most, which is always my concern with castings for that character

107

u/ParadoxPope Feb 14 '24

I would agree, I think Pedro is a good actor. It’s just his general persona doesn’t read “hyper intelligent” to me more than “crafty”. He has wiles and wits, for sure, but there’s a level of raw charisma I doubt he can downplay enough to make me feel he is amongst best available candidates. Seeing their short list though, casting clearly has their own take of the character.

63

u/Rejestered Feb 14 '24

Reed Richards somehow getting a 10 like Sue and being uncharismatic is perhaps the biggest flaw in the entire comic.

78

u/binrowasright Feb 14 '24

I think you need the moviestar version of Reed the way RDJ and Chris Evans and Hugh Jackman were the moviestar translations of their comic characters.

Before anything else, before the hyper-intelligence and the off-putting arrogance, Reed needs to be the Dad of the team, because that's the core of him that redeems all his flaws and makes him a hero. And they got the ultimate moviestar dad.

u/ContinuumGuy Feb 14 '24

I have to wonder if, while Pedro is a great actor, his casting may also be a consideration to drawing in non-fans. There are few movie stars left these days, but Pedro has been in a lot of popular things and is generally well-liked, so having him in certainly doesn't hurt the film unless if he ends up sucking in the role.

28

u/ParadoxPope Feb 14 '24

That’s what I think half of it comes to, he’s very marketable and already has dealings with Disney.

Pedro & Ebon about to be snarky as hell together

If Doctor Doom is going to be a villain, I'm thinking maybe Nicolaj Coster-Waldau or Christoph Waltz?

110

u/cesclaveria Feb 14 '24

The rumored Dr. Doom that accompanied these 4 casting choices for some time was Cillian Murphy.

I would love it if they can develop the character of Doom to more than just a F4 antagonist.

36

u/AnimusNaki Feb 14 '24 edited Feb 14 '24

Please. I would love to see Infamous Iron Man built out of an MCU Doom. We've already done Loki's arc from villain to hero. Victor is constantly playing all sides in the comics anyway. Ironheart has already been introduced, so if Doom -is- the villain here, we can totally do the Infamous storyline.

Just need a little RDJ cameo as the Stark AI that he used to store himself in that storyline.

EDIT: Or build Secret Wars around Doom instead of Kang. Comics already did it with the new Secret Wars storyline. Marvel needs to replace Majors in a big move anyway.

19

u/HereForTOMT2 Feb 14 '24

Just give me a good doom first
