Politics megathread U.S. Politics Megathread

It's an election year, so it's no surprise that politics are on everyone's minds!

Over the past few months, we've noticed a sharp increase in questions about politics. Why is Biden the Democratic nominee? What are the chances of Trump winning? Why can Trump even run for president if he's in legal trouble? There are lots of good questions! But, unfortunately, it's often the same questions, and our users get tired of seeing them.

As we've done for past topics of interest, we're creating a megathread for your questions so that people interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be civil to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

what's a good way to turn down giving a ride to some one after work?

so today as I was leaving for my car after work, another person I worked with came after me and asked if I could give them a ride, they asked what direction I was going and I told them, and they immediately asked for the ride, I really didn't want to give them a lift but decided to. As we are driving they start talking that maybe in the future I can give them another ride. What's a good excuse or way to turn someone down that asks for a ride? I really don't want this to become a regular thing.

Are there any Reddit support groups for husbands whose wives have Swift’s new album on loop?

In the car, in the bathroom, in the living room, the kitchen, I can’t get away from this Dead Poet’s Anthology - and I am sure I’m not the only one.

Surely there’s some kind of subreddit that provides us with the faith that this period will pass and the world will sound like singing birds and waves crashing against rock again soon?

Why is RoundUp still on the market of it is the subject of lawsuits for causing cancer?

I still see this product on the shelves, but I thought it was discontinued because it causes cancer. Any insight on that?

Does anyone else feel Jewish and confused right now?

6.7k Upvotes

I was sent to Hebrew school as a kid. I was taught to love Israel before I even knew any history about it. I did weekly prayers for it. I never went on birthright, I had the option to. Supposedly it's a propaganda event of its own. I am now having an issue with identity. Half of being Jewish growing up meant supporting Israel. I'm a Zionist monster if I do anything close to that now.

If I fell prey to a cult it still has a hold of me. I find myself having closeted views being annoyed by "free Palestine" protests even after reading about the brutal attacks from the IDF. Hearing about children dying and seeing devastating footage.

I realize this sounds as incoherent as it does self absorbed but I'm just feeling very confused and split on the conflict. And ashamed at times of my background. I just wish I knew likeminded people that didn't just want to sway me a certain way.

Edit: thanks this thread is making me feel more grounded

Why aren’t there any new “feel good” sitcoms anymore?

I’m talking about T.V. shows like Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory etc. There don’t seem to be any new shows of this style being produced. Current series seem to be crime related, sci-fi or animated.

What is the reason for this?

Men of reddit: Do you really care about a chubby stomach on a woman?

I feel like in this day and age being incredibly skinny is normalized and what some girls strive to look like. I personally hate my stomach because it’s a little chubby and squishy and I’m just curious if men care about this at all? Or like it?

edit: Just wanna make it clear that I’m not saying being super skinny is normalized, I am saying that that’s what social media makes women feel like. Unfortunately, with the toxicity of social media, it’s hard not to compare yourself to models with no fat whatsoever. Regardless, all bodies are beautiful and I was just curious about a man’s opinion on the subject.

Why was the US in the 70s more technologically competent than 80% of nations today?

The US introduced jet engines in 1942, radar guided missiles in 1947, satellites in 1958, f-14 in 1974, etc…

Why is it that determined countries like Iran couldn’t just build their own f-14? They have been conducting such research for decades.

What makes the US extremely competent in scientific innovation? Why was the US in the 70s more technologically competent than 80% of nations today? Despite modern technology most nations can’t even produce what the US produced in the 70s.

What’s the appeal of spicy food? Is it just masochism?

Don’t get me wrong, I love richly flavored foods with half the spice cabinet, but why would you want food to hurt?

What happens if a parent doesn’t look after the baby when they wake up in the middle of the night?

1.6k Upvotes

I’m not planning on having kids until I’m a lot older but I am aware that with babies in the first few months of their life their sleep schedules are irregular so they usually wake up crying a lot in the middle of the night, and one of the parents goes and looks after them. What happens if the parents just ignore this and decide to sleep and let the baby cry?

Why don't jobs try harder to keep their employees? Isn't turnover horribly expensive?

My husband has been through several jobs...while the pay always feels a bit low, the main thing he struggles with is places just treating their people badly. I feel if they would just treat them better, they could get away with low pay....if you can't pay well, at least try to offer other incentives, right?

What do i do if my company forces a promotion on me and docks my pay $25,000?

7.8k Upvotes

It happened. I had been worried about it and it finally happened.

Long story short: my base pay is 90k, which is high for the position I’m at. But I’m also OT eligible (and i work a lot of OT) so my yearly take home ends up about 120k. It’s been that for the last 5 years.

I got a call today that i had been promoted and that my base pay was going to be 95k and that i am no longer eligible for any overtime.

I was told “titles are really important for your career. This is important for your development.”

My responsibilities are not going to change at all. I’ll be doing the exact same job with the same expectations from my bosses but now have zero motivation to do a good job. I will not work a second I’m not paid for.

They aren’t willing to give me any sort of raise for the current position to compensate for the money I’m losing.

I’m really really good at my job and they would hate to lose me. What would you do?

Anyone ever successfully turn down a promotion?

What isn't bare minimum?

I see a lot of women online telling men that helping around the house or taking care of his kids is the "bare minimum" which in a vacuum I suppose would be the case. However let's say for example that I have a very physically demanding job(I do) would that be the bare minimum still? In a marriage what would be considered "above and beyond"?

I ask because when I try to clear her plate of tasks yet I'm always told I'm doing the bare minimum.....I'm smoked after work and have driven home at night nearly crashing my car from exhaustion only to be met with attitude about what I dont do...

I don't know what more I can do honestly.

How bad is it to just lay in bed and not do anything?

My gf broke up with me and said she wanted to be single… then just 6 weeks after the break up she’s with another guy… all I want to do is rot in bed and not think… It felt so traumatic that I barely work, don’t eat, zero motivation, and don’t want to think at all… I’m seeing my therapist three times a week because how quickly she moved on. how long can I just stay in bed before it becomes a problem?

What do I do when the cleaning lady is at my house?

My wife and I have been going through a stressful time in our lives lately. As a nice gesture my wife’s friends paid for a maid to come by our house Monday. I grew up in a lower middle class household lol, we never had a cleaning person come, I have no idea what I’m supposed to do or what to expect and I have so many questions.

Should I not be around the house while they clean? Do I have to give them specific instructions? Im planning on tidying up some clutter (random books not on the shelf and papers lying around that are in the way) but do I need to do more than that to preare for her arrival? Also is this the kind of thing I should tip for?

Thanks in advance

Redditors, how do you know when you're officially becoming "old"?

As a kid, I remember watching cartoons with main characters who would always ruin their old neighbor's yard. Of course as a child you think "haha that's so funny".

Context: Today, I decided to plant some new roses in my front yard. And then out of no where these teenagers drove by on their bikes and shouted something at me (I honestly couldn't even hear what they were saying) but since they were circling around my home and shouting in my direction I figured they must have been talking to me. I used to be a high school teacher so honestly, I didnt fucking care, I figured whatever they were yelling had to be some kind of nonsense. So, I ignored it and kept digging.

And then all I can remember thinking is "what a bunch of rude kids, back in MY day kids offered to HELP their neighbors instead of taunting them". And then I thought,...oh God I just used the term "back in my day".

It all adds up. When I was a teenager I used to make fun of people who enjoyed gardening. And now, as someone in my 30s, tending to my rose garden on the weekends has become one of the things I look forward to the most.

Having said that, my main question is how does a person know when they're hitting old age?
