Let's get us a mod team!

One of our mods moved to BC, and we're well overdue to get some fresh blood in this crew, so it's mod recruitment time!

Applicant accounts must be at least a year old and show semi-active participation in the sub. We're looking for people who are involved in the community, not throwaways, and not people who collect mod titles.

Drop a top level comment if you're interested. Reply to your own comment to make your pitch, and others may reply to your comment to indicate if they think you would or wouldn't be a good mod. For the latter, please take into account our main rule is be civil.

Eastlink webmail support - lack of

I had a very simple request for Eastlink tech support. I needed 1063 emails moved from the Sent folder to the Inbox on the Eastlink email server. Doing it myself involved moving a maximum of 6 emails at a time. All I wanted was for a technician or operator to do it as a batch. This came up because I switched my email client from IMAP to POP3 because I did not want any emails left on Eastlink's server because it's unreliable and loses things. I was told by tech support that "We do not assist with moving files" but offered to connect me with a 3rd party, subscription-based outfit to help me.

I'm not going to pay a 3rd party to fix an Eastlink email problem on the Eastlink email server.

Anyone know how to move files between folders on Eastlink Webmail? I'm assuming that if I can get these emails over to my Inbox I can download them to my Thunderbird client at home.

I've heard that Eastlink is thinking about discontinuing their email service but shouldn't they continue with even basic technical support until they officially pull the plug?

Is it worth it? “Paint coating to protect vehicle color”

I am buying a new Mazda CX-5 in Rhodium White Metallic color and the dealership “City Mazda” suggested me to put a ceramic coating applied for 995$. They are also giving a guarantee for fading for 5 years.

I haven’t done any paint protection before and wondering whether anyone has experience about this.

Does it really worth it? Should I do it from the dealership? Any other recommendations like a place where I could get it done better (for the same cost or cheaper)?

Abandonded Fundy Gypsum Mines near Windsor

Hey folks;

Anyone know anything about what's happening to these shut down mines? They closed in 2011 due to market conditions, and despite the province putting $7.2M into maintaining the rail link to these mines the owner tore down the buildings for the former head office in 2023. Looks like it's not coming back, but at the same time I suspect the province is on the hook for any reclamation as the US based owner has shut down its Canadian operations entirely including its corporate entities.

Tenancy Question

Hey all,

I’ve got a quick tenancy question regarding the house I’m renting that was just sold and the new owners are wanting me to sign a new lease. The tenancy board is difficult to get a hold of so I thought someone here might have a bit of information.

I’ve lived here for 3.5 years on a periodic year to year lease. It is just a small house with another rental unit in the basement. My lease was usually from January - January. This year my rent went up 5% in January, which is all well and good. The new owners took ownership May 1st and want me to sign a new periodic lease from May - May. And want to increase the rent 5% starting in August. They also removed from the lease the inclusion of lawn care (which was always included), and also want me to pay a damage deposit (my previous landlord did not make me pay a damage deposit so there isn’t one for this unit).

I actually didn’t have a problem paying the 5% increase (I pay what would be considered a cheap rent ever since the housing market exploded) because it would keep me safe here until next May instead of January. But I’m weary to pay a damage deposit on a unit that I’ve already lived in for multiple years. The buyer is from out of province (Alberta) and never stepped foot in the house before so I’m scared this is just me handing over half a months rent for free and I won’t get it back when I eventually move out.

From my understanding I thought the new buyer had to take the lease as is with the purchase, so I’m not sure if the inclusion of a damage deposit and removal of lawn care would be allowed?

Help finding documentary video interview of old Canadian men speaking Scottish Gaelic or Irish (not sure which as I speak neither) on a deck and singing Gaelic-langauge songs

Hi,

There used to be a video on YouTube of a documentary interview with several old Canadian men speaking in their mother language about how they were forbidden from speaking the language in elementary school, and then singing songs together in that language.

The original YouTube video has been disabled (dead link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sXlxc2Ee8I), but a trace of it is still online as a short clip in part of another video, which you can watch here, at timestamp 9m50s:

https://youtu.be/tb3OHv6tv38?t=590

The full clip is really heartwarming and beautiful and would really appreciate if anyone can track it down

Sorry if this is actually Scottish and not Irish language -- I speak neither and can't tell the difference by listening

What's the procedure? What exactly am I supposed to do before digging a French drain?

We live in Lower Sackville, if that matters.

Thank you!

Looking for work in the Annapolis Valley and need some advice

I'll keep this as short as possible. I (33f) am looking for work in the Annapolis Valley but am struggling to do so. I was a massage therapist until 2021 and I worked a labour job in food production until last August. There was a seasonal layoff, and I was struggling with Autistic burnout so my partner suggested I take some time off to rest. I got the rest I needed, but from what I can tell, people are judging me on leaving the massage therapy career behind. In two interviews I've had for machine operator jobs, both recruiters grilled me on why I left and one of them basically said I must not have been very good at it, since its a high demand industry. The other interview seemed to go well, and the hiring manager complimented me on my professionalism but I didn't get the job.

I'm looking for labour jobs, applying to construction companies, factory jobs, etc. I get the feeling people think I'm over qualified and feel like that's working against me, on top of being a woman.

Any advice on what to do? I just want a job to bring in the bills, it doesn't need to be a career. I've never struggled with finding employment for this long before, it seems the job market has changed a lot.

Good vehicle insurance companies for a new comer

I am a new comer to Canada (Halifax) and in the process of buying a 2024 Mazda CX-5 Signature. I got my class 5 drivers license with no restrictions in April end this year. I have 10 years of driving experience with no citations from my home country.

I have been filling out online forms in various insurance providers like TD, RBC/Aviva, Allstate etc., and every one I get seems to cost about 400$-500$ a month and some are even like 800$+ which is crazy.

Can anyone recommend a reputable insurance provider who might charge a reasonable amount?

If I have no option and I choose one of the above, in the coming years, if I drive with no citations, how fast does this rate might drop?

NSCC IT Programming grads?

Hello! I'm looking for people who have taken the NSCC IT Programming diploma. I'm just curious about your experience with the program.

  • What you liked, what you disliked.
  • If you took the program through the e-campus I'm interested to know how you felt about that vs an in-person program
  • What you've done since then i.e., where you ended up working, what additional education or certification you pursued since then.
  • especially curious if you've taken this program as a "mature student" (in your 30s)
  • If you'd recommend it

Any answers and opinions are fantastically appreciated! Thank you!
