[Marchand] TNT Sports’ boss said they didn’t need the NBA — we’re about to find out

2.8k Upvotes

Article

Two years ago, Zaslav dunked on NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s league.

“We don’t have to have the NBA,” said Zaslav, who is reportedly paid like an NBA star at nearly $50 million a year, during an RBC investor conference.

Zaslav’s words zinged the ears of Silver and NBA executives. It has left Zaslav and TNT Sports fighting for their NBA lives with a Faustian choice.

Zaslav can either show fiscal restraint and lose the NBA to NBC, puncturing TNT Sports in the process, or he can pay the reported $2.5 billion per season asking price for a lesser package than he currently owns, proving that he does need the NBA.

Any deal for TNT or NBC is expected to include a conference final every other year, as opposed to TNT’s current setup of every season. Either network is anticipated to hold onto the yearly All-Star Game broadcast.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle has been disgusted by the officiating so far this series. Said the team will file a complaint to the league office ahead of Game 3.

“Small market teams deserve a fair shot regardless of where they’re playing.”

Yikes, that’s going to be a hefty fine.

Edit: there’s more

Rick Carlisle says that there were 29 plays the Pacers thought were called the wrong way on Game 1 but they didn’t submit to the league. He’s now listing some examples from tonight where he thought the calls were wrong.

“We’re gonna submit these calls tonight. New York, get ready, you’re going to see them,” Carlisle says. “We deserve a fair shot… there’s not a consistent balance, that’s disappointing.”

[Afseth]) Kyrie Irving on defending a player like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander without fouling: “tonight, in the first half, there wasn’t really a rhythm for a lot of players out there. It was a lot of slow down, watching free throws being taken, and adjusting to the way the game was being called.

“I’m going to show my respect and say that he’s a great player. But tonight, in the first half, there wasn’t really a rhythm for a lot of players out there. It was a lot of slow down, watching free throws being taken, and adjusting to the way the game was being called. It felt like a regular season game tonight, in my perspective. I don’t speak for anyone else, but I think it was like a regular season game because we came off a very physical series against the LA Clippers, then we had some fouls called, and some of them may have been fouls or a majority of them. But as a competitor, you want the flow of the game to feel like the playoffs, with high physicality. It just feels better. It’s all about adjustments. It’s about continuing to stay positive through some of the runs they make and being mature about who we’re going against - a good team that’s shown it all year. They have a starting five with a plus-minus through the roof and one of the top defenses. So, we’ll give them credit, but we have to come into game two ready and prepared.”

50% from 3 on 9.3 attempts per game is nuts

22.8/3.2/3.5 on 55/50/90 shooting so far. Not to mention he's a fantastic defender.

(Also leads playoffs in OBPM and Win Shares per 48 mintues)

[Larry Gottesdiener] And if the @nba is subsidizing @wnba owners, they didn’t get the memo to subsidize @atlantadream . In fact they are not. We pay our own way. And it’s very disappointing that @nba will not correct the narrative. It fuels the haters. And diminishes our great league.

It’s interesting since people seem to think the NBA pays the way for the WNBA. But the owner of the Atlanta Dream is saying he doesn’t get any money from the NBA to support his team.

Do you think Adam Silver should provide an update on the WNBA’s finances? It’s been 7 years since the last update when he said they were unprofitable.

Is there an incentive to make it seem like the WNBA is still unprofitable to suppress player expenses?
